This is not at all the point here but it really bothers me when people refer to the 6 million number when calculating hitler’s evil.

6 million Jews, yes. But also 5 million Romani, communists, poles, homosexuals, disabled people, and other undesirables.

The holocaust was not singularly focused on Jews and citing the 6 million figure erases 45% of those killed by the holocaust.

Not to mention deaths from the war itself in Europe, which is 35-40 million.

So something like 50 million in toto.

There is a strand in genocide studies, and thankfully this is losing adherents now, that the shoah is the only ever “real genocide” in history. And I think it’s important to push back against that because the extermination campaign was so much broader than that.

I found that I made friends by becoming a “local” for a week. I tend to habituate to things quickly so… found a restaurant I like? Found a pub I like? Go to both every night.

The waitresses at the restaurant liked me bc Ukrainian is close enough to Croatian. The pub crawlers liked me due to mere exposure. Your mileage will vary if you’re a one and done tourist.

I sure hope I don’t Google Neil gaiman and accidentally discover anything un-wholesome.
