Camping in my usual spot in the Chilterns last week

The spot is the furthest I could find away from a footpath near where i live, tons of wildlife, a nice little pond and some fields to sit by to watch sunset with a whiskey! Been there about 5 times now

Looks fab! I’m also Chilterns-based and now I’m trying to figure out where this is 🤣

walkthelands

how is it that i have hiked in the chilterns looking for spots and never see anything like this LOL

Honestly my best luck is finding substantial patches of woodland on Google maps 😂, checking alltrails or other trail maps to see where I can find potential spots away from established trails/farms that won't cause bother to anyone else in these areas. There's lots of little spots like this in the Chilterns, have a look around Wendover (although Wendover Woods is quite busy), Princes Risborough, Chinoor and Ashridge etc.. 🙂

I’ve camped at Wendover a couple of times but yeah, early morning trail runners and dog walkers can disturb my morning cuppa! I’m now playing “find the spot” on OS Maps. Is the body of water close to where you camped? 😬

I usually tend to wild camp in other parts of the country on the weekends but it’s nice to camp closer to home midweek. I do exactly the same thing, looking for nice patches of woods on Google Maps and then checking OS Maps to see what access there is.

Aston Rowant or Christmas Common?

Haha I live near wendover, I think I know this woods (it’s not wendover) but not that body of water…. Time to google maps it, I really want a spot for the odd over night camp. If I find your spot, and we bump into each other I’ll be with a black lab and a green lanshan tent. I come in peace ✌️ p.s if you fancy dm’ing me the spot I’ll hook you up with a Amazon voucher

I do love a treasure hunt. I've never been to the Chilterns (yet) but having had a gander at the map my money is on Hengrove Wood.

wolf_knickers

Hmmmm possibly! The trees look like they might be. I always park near there when visiting Wendover Woods and have actually been contemplating checking out Hengrove for a camp myself. But is there a pond there?

[deleted]

According to the OS map, not only does it have a pond, but the pond is relatively close to the edge of the woods with views to the West to watch the sunset over fields.

Like I said though, I've never been there in my life so I could well be talking rubbish.

wolf_knickers

Ooooh, there are two Hengrove Woods on OS Maps, and I was looking at the one alongside Wendover. I think you might be right! But we should probably leave our guessing game now, don’t want to reveal the spot for certain :)

Good spot! We have the same in the New Forest. We have two spots we go back to regularly that we know has less footfall. I love watching the spots change over the seasons.

Bunt_smuggler [OP]

Ah lovely, I wish I had the New Forest a little closer! I know what you mean about the spots changing, I struggle to find the place throughout the year because it all looks so different until I find the familiar log I sit on

I’ve heard people say you shouldn’t camp in forests because of falling branches but I’m not sure if this warning is actually serious or not…

[deleted]

Google "camper killed by falling branch" and look at the number of results. It's very serious.

You are slightly misunderstanding the warning though, the issue is not camping in forests, it is camping under trees. You'll see OP has chosen to camp where large tree limbs are extremely unlikely to fall near their tent.

Bunt_smuggler [OP]

It's a risk, so I looked for a relatively open spot with no trees or large branches overhanging too close to my tent, it was moderately windy in the morning too

[deleted]

Its a thing. Dead branches are a ticking time bomb, especially when its windy.

Best practice is to look at the trees before you set up. Look for living trees with no dead branches, if you camp under them you will be fine.

mrscalperwhoop2

That looks good.

What tent is that ?

joeholden36

Wow looks great, I’m local to the Chilterns but can’t figure where the pond is 😂 I’ve got a spot which is completely away from paths and well hidden if you want to swap places? 😁
