I would have wasted as much of this cop's time as humanly possible. "I do not consent to any search." "ATTICA! ATTICA!" He'd probably plant some shit on me and I'd get 20 years of v-coding hell, but still, it would be a moral victory.
Toys For Bob are too much of wusses to give us a Skylander who has canonically gotten v-coded
This would be good as no victory at all. You’re wasting away in a cell for years because of something that would’ve at most wasted 10-20 minutes of the cops time.
Someone learned the definition of a moral victory today.
I am slightly angry and wish I could have an argument against this but I don’t, so I am just going to vocalize that I am peeved.
Sorry. If it's any consolation I also yearn for moral victory to be something other than a euphemism for total defeat.

yeah sorry we literally live in hell <3
v- coding?
V-coding is when (generally American) prisons house trans women with the most violent inmates either to pacify the violent inmates with a suitable rape doll or just to punish the trans woman for existing while trans.
This is not exclusive to America, though I think American V-coding goes even further than what you described; trans women get raped by guards in public spaces as "entertainment", and if they resist V-coding in any way they get charged with assault and have their sentences extended. Just absolutely vile shit.

Trans people (particularly trans women) who get arrested and sentenced to jail are often… “given” to certain cellmates (typically aggressive ones), in the hopes that they’ll rape the trans person and not the others.
Absolutely, utterly disgusting, and unfortunately a very real issue. Unfortunately, with all the other bullshit going on with prisons (as well as it being a crime against queer people, and thus typically pushed under the rug) it isn’t talked about as much.
Nah, he held a stakeout over an eBay swap. All you have to do to make him feel bad is mock him for the time he already wasted.
Cops would question me so often when Pokémon GO came out lol. Just a bunch of fucking nerds in a car looking for gengar
“Look man, whaddya want? I’ve got Giants, I’ve got Traps, I’ve got Imaginators—“
“You’ve got Imaginators?”
Can you sue for that sort of thing? Like emotional damage or something? If a cop randomly accused me of drug dealing for the equivalent of a Facebook marketplace transaction I've have (even worse) anxiety for the rest of my life doing anything
In America, almost definitely not. What was described would look basically the same as a drug deal to a bystander who didn't know it was toys. The cop would almost certainly have a reasonable suspicion to approach and investigate, and I'm guessing would have probable cause as well if you declined to show him. Not saying its super cool or anything, but it would definitely be legal.
If he's asking for your consent to search, he doesn't have probable cause.
That's not really how it works, cops arent prosecutors. They're usually going to ask first, because if you say yes it's an easy defense. Only if you say no do they have to figure out what they are and arent allowed to force you to do, they might have to detain you until they get a dog there, or until they get a judge to sign a warrant. A lot of time and effort is saved if people just say yes, and they often do against their own self interest
Probable cause assumes reasonable evidence of criminality or intent to commit a crime. Two people exchanging goods for money in a parking lot is not illegal on principal, but it's very suspicious.
If the cop had probable cause, he would just tell you to get out of the car and arrest you. In that case it doesn't matter if he's wrong or inconveniences you or fucks up your property.
I'm not in the habit of giving away my rights just because someone asks me to
Good! I would generally not sharing anything past your identification. The OP situation (if real) is kind of unique because there's a very simple explanation that probably saves him a lot of trouble, but I would still be very careful in that situation and probably call a lawyer first
Guarantee you can't. This is just harmless. They routinely get away with heinous shit
No, especially in America.
The best you can do is say "I do not consent to a search of my vehicle at this time." and if they say "I'll just get a warrant" you say "go ahead".
If they're asking at all, they don't have probable cause. They would just tell you to get out of the car.
It takes a cop a long time to get a warrant in a situation like that, so if they think they can actually get one you'll be stuck there a long time, but if they don't and you call their bluff, they should back off.
An officer can stop you for any and all, or no, reason. In some states in the US they can demand your ID without probable cause ( some states will denote thats required but no one follows it )
Stop and Frisk is technically not legal last I checked but the 'next best thing' is they stop you, see if you get agitated, then use that as a reason to search your person. As someone said ages ago, if a cop follows you around for long enough you WILL break a law. Often vague or low risk, but technically a law will be broken.
I got pulled over right before getting to the county line by a county sheriff who I think had been following me for at least fifteen minutes, said the reason was I used my turn signal too late for the weather conditions, 2 miles back from where he pulled me over. It’s infuriating.
In the USA you can’t even win a lawsuit for “The cops watched me get stabbed in the head by a known wanted armed criminal on the NYC subway and didn't even give me first aid or call paramedics or stay by my side when I was bleeding out on the floor” (Lozito v. New York City, 2012)
even if this was a crime if a civilian did it to you(I don't think it is?) you can't sue cops for crimes they commit against you. they have qualified immunity.
you can sue the police department itself but that's a much taller order
You might be able to make a case for entrapment, but it'd be a shaky one.
There’s absolutely zero case for entrapment. How would there be?
Entrapment is a legal defense to a criminal charge. It is not something you can sue for.
I was 100% ready for this to turn into the man with the service revolver that forces anon to play Mahjong
I’m not accusing them of anything - I’m just asking why they would buy Skylanders figures like that.
You ever bought anything off of Facebook marketplace? Just how it goes most of the time. Bought magic cards in the same way. I gave them a fat wad of cash in the McDonald’s parking lot and they opened up the trunk and started opening boxes like it was full of Gold bars
Right, I forgot about that.
Hey, don't knock it, it's how I bought my Hornby Q1
Cop was probably so mad that he staked out in his car for hours for no reason.
Wait the undercover cop asked for money while undercover?? That somehow feels more wrong than the cop trying to get someone on drug charges.
'> OP parks at the McDonalds and gets out of the car
'> It is so fucking hot
'> "Skylanders of the fire element are stronger in this zone."
Reading this in Chaos's voice
One time I did this kinda thing to get a used Amazon Firestick with my mom.
Oh that’s funny, me and a buddy just finished Giants yesterday
That happened.
