ADHD meds and understanding drinking

Hi everyone

This question has been asked a million times probably so I’m going to make it a million and one.

I’ve started elvanse, I’m on 50mg, potentially up to 60mg, and I’m currently giving myself a period of grace with it, let my body adjust, try and find the right dosage etc, and I’ve cut out caffeine, sugars, I’ve been working on diet too, and no alcohol too.

I’ve never been somebody who drinks often, but when I do it’s stupid amounts and the day after or the coming days, my urges to do it again are hard to suppress, I know I sound like an alcoholic, but having heard what alcohol and ADHD does it all makes sense. I’ve always controlled the urge to drink, and those quick pints here and there I’ve got better at but I’m the only one out of my friends and family who isn’t drinking. There’s never any pressure from them and they understand, however, I do feel left out.

What are peoples approaches to drinking, and how is it best managed? I know there’s not a same approach for everyone, but is there any advice anyone could share with me.

Thanks in advance

I now only drink on rare occasions. I will plan it though and won't take meds on that day. I'm of an age where I've had my binges in the past and today my body says 'enough' after a couple..

Which is kinda ideal.

tomomalono [OP]

I think my binges are behind me, but it does help put into perspective why I always did maybe have too many when others knew when to stop and I’m hoping that with the meds, it’s that understanding of a limit too

But that’s for sharing that, can I just ask in regards to not taking the meds on that day, I’ve read a few people say that, does it help and if so what about the day after?

Male_strom

The day after is fine? I'm never having more than 4-5 drinks at the most. Normally it's 1 or 2 (plus some 0% drinks)

Wonderful_Raisin_312

Do you titrate back up or just go straight back to full dose the next day?

Male_strom

Back to full dose.

Ah cool, thank you!

I can only speak about my experience, but I'm very careful with booze these days. Alcoholism runs in my family, and I LOVE booze and being drunk. I don't mean being a bit tiddly, but absolutely, utterly, shit- yourself-and-shag-your-boss's-dog hammered.

This is not a good way to live. I've tried.

Now I keep it to a couple of drinks a week. I've worked out that I can have ONE drink without fucking myself up for the next day. More than that and I might as well not bother taking my Methylphenidate. I miss the booze, and I will admit that a couple of times a year I'll think screw it, take a long weekend off the meds, and do my best to accidentally kill myself with whisky, or vodka, or tequila, or hand gel. Seriously, I would suck the alcohol out of a deoderant stick if I had no other option.

I suspect my enthusiasm for alcohol is because, before being medicated, it was the only way I knew how to stop the constant hamster-wheel of thought.

I've noticed that since starting Methylphenidate it takes much less alcohol for me to feel drunk. I don't know why this is, and I'm pretty sure that I'm very much a minority. But I do know I'm happier drinking less. The boss's dog is also relieved.

Ahh... ADHD and the relationship with alcohol. I get you, I am generally the fastest drinker pre meds, and the first one to suggest the pub / round at the bar. I'd be lying if i said i was restricting alcohol consumption when i started titration just over a month ago, right at the end of a busy season of being at music festivals and other outdoor music events in my line of work. What I found is that I wasn't feeling the effects of alcohol as much and so i was drinking much more. Obviously not a good thing. I've since cut it right back and I'm happy to order a non alcoholic lager or pale ale or just had a soft drink. I don't feel the need to order two bottles of wine with every dinner with my other half. Your body and mind will thank you when you get to that point.

I've always been a big, if intermittent drinker.

I'm seldomly in the mood to drink. But when I AM in the mood, I drink like I'm on holiday.

I did my first few months titrating on elvanse with no caffeine (or at least just decaf tea) then lightly introduced caffeine & booze back into my diet.

They have pretty much no discernable effect on my meds, luckily.

tomomalono [OP]

That’s what I’ve read most peoples approach is, but I suppose it is different for everything.

Thanks for the advice

I've always been a big drinker, but meds have helped me cut down loads.

Official advice is no alcohol at all. For me, I will sometimes have one or two drinks at the end of the day while on meds - like an impromptu visit to the pub.

Anymore than two and I definitely have a worse hangover the next day, than if I was med free.

If I want to have more than a few, then I don't take my meds on that day nor the day after.

I did once drink during the day when I'd taken my meds and I really didn't like it at all. Felt very weird and the alcohol didn't really have an effect.

I've never done it, but I've heard that taking your meds on a hangover is hell. Don't do that either.

Same here, although I took my meds the morning after the night before without thinking and my blood pressure went through the roof. Scary enough levels I won’t do it again. If I plan on having a drink I won’t take my meds on the days either side either. Although I used to drink much more often than I do now to switch off and reset. Don’t feel the need to so much now.

tomomalono [OP]

Have you found your okay with missing the days and feeling okay with the drink?

muggylittlec

Normally on those days, I am going to to see mates or go to a gig or something. So it's often on the weekend's where I don't have to work. Work and stress are the biggest struggles for me with ADHD.

So really I just see it as a 'day off' from the meds and try and enjoy my day.

tomomalono [OP]

That makes sense. I suppose it’s to take the time off them when it feels appropriate doesn’t it. And it’s probably different when you’re busy, or on holidays etc.

Does it have any effect on you when you restart the meds after being off them?

Thanks for your advice

muggylittlec

Yeah it does. I went away for a week recently and it was like starting again in terms of side effects - but mentally I am used to what it feels like - so it wasn't so bad.

If I take a day or two off however, I don't really notice much difference.

tomomalono [OP]

That does make sense.

I’m okay with not drinking, or drinking a lot less, I’m okay with that and I’ve always been aware of that. The odd pint here and there is fine. But sometimes it does feel hard to avoid, or being left out.

Thank you uso much for you advice on this, been really helpful.

muggylittlec

I actually told myself I was going to stop drinking when I started my meds and I hated it. I felt very left out and I realized that although I have drunk too much during periods of my life - I really enjoy the odd drink here and there.

I'm much happier now I've cut down a lot. Good luck trying to find the right amount for you.

FitSolution2882

Haven't taken a drop in 8 or so months since starting.

Considered it once or twice but I simply can't take the hangover or extreme anxiety it can trigger.

No longer worth it for me, I've had more than most in the 16 years or so I did drink but that's over for me now I guess.

tomomalono [OP]

That’s the balance isn’t it. And I am comfortable with that, I’m not in my teens and early twenties now where drinking is as fun as it used to be.

FitSolution2882

Yeah. I don't quite know how I used to do it. Frequently shitfaced at the weekend and the next few days a write off. It borderline scares me thining about it now.

tomomalono [OP]

It all makes sense now though, really, when you don’t know. I was always chasing more, staying out latest, anything that made me feel better. I’d drink more than anyone else, and still be standing, or, have blackout no recollection the next day. It is scary

FitSolution2882

Yep, same here. I miss the fun but not the stress

I am also on elvanse and explained to my friends that I won't be drinking and why. They are very understanding and we now do things other than just drinking and partying like yoga, walks, nice lunches, fun workshops.... And we have a great time! Conversation is so much better and I can actually remember what we talked about (as I always used to forget everything instantly and then felt shame and blamed booze for it all) and I feel our bond is stronger.

If I am out and still fancy a drink I just go for alcohol free beer - there's some really nice ones out there and they make me feel giggly and happy anyway!

It's such a mindset change but it's so worth it! And the meds I find make me crave booze less anyway.

treesofthemind

I never drink by itself, I only have a glass of wine with food that complements it - like meat or fish. Otherwise I don’t drink at all. If you do it with food it slows absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream. This is generally how it’s done in Europe.

I think the UK has a really toxic drinking culture. I remember going to a Christmas party in my first job and people were getting blind drunk and I found it gross as a 22 year old - and they were all married with kids 😂 It’s really important to know your limits.

Also as a woman, I make a point of avoiding alcohol in public, because you just never know - possible spiked drinks, and getting drunk in public opens you up to dangerous situations.

UK reddit when people want to drink at a party

Sorry for caring about health and how to behave respectfully in public 😂 SMH. This is why the UK has a bad reputation internationally

By all means don’t install good habits into your life. You’re regret it when you’re older and the damage is harder to reverse.

doctorsmagic

I'm not even a frequent drinker, but the puritanical comments that appear under every post that mentions ale on UK Reddit is beyond irritating. Being shocked that a Christmas party is rowdy is just unhinged.
