/r/ice_poseidon is very advertiser friendly so this decision strikes me as odd. That forum was nothing but sober discussion led by scholars.

[deleted]

it is kinda funny tho. that subreddit had heavy mod abuse and even had an /r/The_Donald mod moderationg it

Caesarjamesss

Def the reason it’s grouped with these, not to mention the inherent racism

Lindseyisagirlsname

yikes

DARTHPLAYA

Pretty sure it's their way of trying to damage control the increasing toxicity on the site. If you frequent other socials you could tell Reddit in general was starting to get a bad rep.

Argarck

Quarantine has been around since forever, most subs that have videos of people dying or REALLY NSFW gore shit are quarantined so they don't reach /r/all

[deleted]

/r/anime quarantines itself for 4 years.

Let that sink in.

Oniichanplsstop

Yeah because they hit the top of r/all with the "top bathtub scenes of 2014"

Tsundere_God

We were a mistake

let_that_sink_in
DARTHPLAYA

Watchpeopledie is literally always on r/all tho wat?

Ricardo1701

got quarantined today apparently

[deleted]

good. I never understood why that was allowed on r/all.

[deleted]

I understand removing ads and not putting quarantined subreddits on /r/all and popular, but I can't even search for those subreddits on the app anymore? That means I'll have to either sub to every single one of them or use google search each time? That's bullshit imo. I wish I could at least unhide the quarantined subreddits, or they could have them show up if you type in the entire name (no accidental suggestions).

Edit: notifications from comment replies in quarantined subs is broken for me too, unless it's a coincidence, I have a red "1" badge on notifications that wont go away from a reply on ice's reddit. I also cant see my comment history for comments posted on quarantined sub. Legit aids in terms of user experience imo

Have you tried going into settings and enabling the "I'm older than 18" or whatever it is setting? I dont know what you mean by NSFW but I can search and find subreddits such as gonewild and fiftyfifty in the mobile app. I'm assuming they're NSFW subs. Also r NSFW and nsfw gifs show up for me

Reddit is just trying to ban wrong-think. Reddit believes in separate but unequal communities as a means to achieve diversity and equality.

lucasrules70

Imagine believing some dumb shit like this.

ThotBurglar

Which one of your subs got quarantined :)

[deleted]

Uh oh a private website is trying to protect its ability to earn money. Guess this is Gestapo Germany x 1984 boys.

Go complain about SJWs and women somewhere else.

[deleted]
MDEWorldPeace6969696

Uh oh, Communists are screaming the private company meme. They really stick it to the man and all his patriarchal heteronormative bullshit, BTW.

BrilliantInvite

So you would be okay with a private website banning Jews if it protected its ability to earn money?

BeingRightAmbassador

Almost like there's a block filter for a reason.

i wouldn't say sick. it's more morbid curiosity tbh. while there are a lot of edgelords who think they're funny there, there are quite a few people who remain respectful too; especially in the cases of deaths by unfortunate disasters or terrorist attacks.

Laughing and engaging with horrible things is a much healthier attitude than banning it and trying to hide it in the dark while you pretend it doesn't exist.

Old banned version of watchpeopledie

Reddit is just another social field where people disagree on things and that has never looked pretty. For people to dress it up as some sort of new or controversial thing is ridiculous.

The only problem Reddit has ever reinforced is the hardening of the echochambers and now that issue will only further be fortified.

DARTHPLAYA

That's the thing though, I don't care that those echo chambers exist. If I don't see them on r/all as far as I'm concerned, they don't exist.

heelydon

That's the thing though, I don't care that those echo chambers exist.

It isn't about you caring that they exist, as much as you, being a rational human being, understanding that they breed an extremely polarized worldview from whichever side it comes.

This is perfectly showcased by how modern online discourse is handled, especially on reddit.

In that sense, reddits new way of handling these situations, will only further dig these holes that people sit in and reinforce their hold on people.

If I don't see them on r/all as far as I'm concerned, they don't exist.

That seems like a strangely detached approach to life around you? Do you actively choose to not be critical of how things develop or question why and how things are going?

DARTHPLAYA

Really impressive that you way able to deduct the process by which I make decisions in real life off of that one Reddit comment... Even if I am detached from what may seem like reality to you, I literally could not give two shits about what someone who I will never know or never interact with in any way shape or form decides to type on their keyboard. I really don't have that kind of time on my hands, simple as that.

heelydon

Really impressive that you way able to deduct the process by which I make decisions in real life off of that one Reddit comment...

If you look at the phrasing, those are questions, not confirmations or judgment.

Even if I am detached from what may seem like reality to you, I literally could not give two shits about what someone who I will never know or never interact with in any way shape or form decides to type on their keyboard.

Then participating in this discussion on this topic, in this very comment section seems extremely at odds with your general perspective on these situations.

DARTHPLAYA

Yep, this conversation is meaningless. After this I'm going to log off my computer, go to sleep and wake up tomorrow morning and nothing that is said here will affect how I spend my day tomorrow. Doesn't mean I'm not going to get my point across.

It would even be more meaningless if I never knew this subreddit existed.

SarcasticCarebear

Your comment is actually stupid and shows stunning ignorance.

"You don't care that echo chambers exist if you don't see them on all."

You realize they have just hidden echo chambers they don't agree with and pushed the echo chambers that further the accepted agenda forward right? You are still only seeing echo chambers. Just the ones they want you to see. Thats EXACTLY how propaganda works. Reddit is being run like the Chinese govt runs the internet.

DARTHPLAYA

Haha you're right, I guess if I had to chose between seeing frequent posts from r/cringeanarchy or from the absolutely disgusting echo chamber that is r/aww on the front page I should be choosing the former because of the fact that it's opinions aren't widely accepted xD

SarcasticCarebear

You joke but aww can be really awful. They constantly fall for animals being abused to make a "cute" video for youtube.

coin69

Pretty sure it's their way of trying to damage control the increasing toxicity on the site. If you frequent other socials you could tell Reddit in general was starting to get a bad rep.

lmao are u kidding me, its been bad since forever, are people pretending twitter/facebook/instagram is NOT toxic shit hahahha.

DARTHPLAYA

I'm curious as to why you would think those sites are less friendlier than Reddit which uses a voting system and where pretty much everyone is anonymous.

WhatsupDoc001

It's just trash criticizing other trash. As if the reddit-approved subs or other social media aren't full of toxic morons whining about everything and being assholes 24/7.

edit: lol from +9 to -1 in a few mins. I wonder where retards are brigading from this time.

[deleted]

[deleted]

WhatsupDoc001

I just visited Cringeanarchy to witness these "Nazis talking about what they want to do to Jews" and all I found was a bunch of 12 year old edgelords making juvenile jokes (so business as usual). Is this one of those things social media idiots are doing where you pretend to be dumb by taking jokes seriously to demonize people they don't like while using anecdotal evidence and a few examples to paint entire communities with a broad brush?

r/Fullcommunism btw, another sub that got quarantined isn't any more deranged than r/politics for example, both subs are full of delusional bitter assholes like most political subreddits from far-left to far-right, the only difference is that r/politics has an approved by the reddit administration political opinion.

[deleted]

[deleted]

WhatsupDoc001

It's the social media effect where the average moron lives in bubbles so dumb ideas are allowed to fester and grow uncontrollably while the people in these bubbles have the sensitivities of a rich princess when it comes to opposing views because they're not used to them anymore.

Social media including reddit are fucking cancer, you can use them correctly but you'd pretty much have to bypass all the "features" their creators have put in place to keep you in your bubble while opposing the majority of their braindead subscribers that have been brainwashed by them. What's even worse is that this trash have monopolized the internet and killed most forums that used to have pretty fucking awesome communities during the late 90's and early 00's. Being a 30+ old fart I miss the old non-shitty internet so. fucking. much. I kinda feel sorry for anyone who didn't experience it.

mtg_liebestod

Is this one of those things social media idiots are doing where you pretend to be dumb by taking jokes seriously to demonize people you don't like while using anecdotal evidence and a few examples to paint entire communities with brush strokes?

Nah, it's more one of those things the social media idiots do where they just sample the worst examples of speech/expression on a forum they dislike and argue that that should be used to ban the entire platform.

shaggy1265

Is this one of those things social media idiots are doing where you pretend to be dumb by taking jokes seriously to demonize people they don't like while using anecdotal evidence and a few examples to paint entire communities with a broad brush?

No, this is one of those things where you pretend something doesn't happen just because you didn't see evidence of it on today's front page of the subreddit. It's funny that you accuse him of "playing dumb" while you sit there and play dumb yourself.

WhatsupDoc001

Um, that's the fucking point, I didn't see it in the front page therefore it's not as frequent as he implies. A few bad examples doesn't mean the entire community is like that but I guess authoritarians are gonna authoritarian and use the worst possible examples they can find to paint with a broad brush and ask for censorship.

If you were raised in an environment that taught you you shouldn't have repercussions for what you say, then all I can do is feel sorry for you.

[deleted]

[deleted]

DARTHPLAYA

I used to think like this so I'm hoping I can change your mindset.

Everyone has unique experiences... Telling people when/how to react to being insulted based on your unique experiences doesn't really work. This is something that you eventually come to realize especially if you've had it as rough as your making it sound. It seems that you have accepted the fact that toxicity (specifically online toxicity) is a bad thing, but suddenly you have a problem with people trying to minimize it.

[deleted]

[deleted]

DARTHPLAYA

That's what quarantining subreddits and banning them is though.

No... That's Reddit taking their platform away from people who used it to abuse the terms of service they agreed to when they signed up in the first place, there is no conspiracy here, there is no unfair censorship taking place here, this is simply bad people being punished for doing bad things and I'm sorry you've become too desensitised to see this. Personal experiences do not even come into play here because Reddit has a right to decide what their site is used for.

It's irresponsible to shelter and put "mean words" on a pedestal because in reality it does no damage. Also the fact that what's offensive is subjective.

You've contradicted yourself here. If what is and isn't offensive content is subjective then so is what is and isn't hurtful content. You've accepted the fact that what is/isn't damaging varies between people yet somehow come to the conclusion that online harassment "does no damage".

[deleted]

[deleted]

DARTHPLAYA

And you have a problem with this why?

[deleted]

[deleted]

[deleted]

Ads. Not as sinister as you might've been thinking, just the standard revenue generation.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Sharradan

If you're talking about subreddit moderators, they don't receive any payment. Subreddits generate revenue for Reddit, through ads and Reddit Gold, the mods don't get paid by Reddit at all.

KaiserTom

don't get paid by Reddit

That's an important distinction. There are already plenty of examples of mods astroturfing their subreddits for other companies.

nicholasr325

A lot is two words. Holy shit man, 2018

frabotly

There's still ads on those subs on mobile lol

ezpc450

Yes. Reddit is making sure not to have advertisements show on content that might put the advertiser in a bad light (like a person saying the n word after dying on the bridge).

heelydon

What? Did you read what the purpose is?

They explicitly in their announcement state that it is to avoid people accidentally stumbling upon content that would upset them. It is a proactive trigger warning.

Robotic_cock

That is what they said in order to not upset people, anyone with half a brain can see this is a move to get more adversiters.

heelydon

Riiiiiiiiight, as if advertisers gives a shit about their ads being placed in a republican, democratic or sports subreddit.

If advertisers were that problematic to please, then Reddit would never function in the first place given its ad strategy.

ezpc450

Advertisers indeed give many shits about where their advertisements appear, as the average user associates the ad with the content. This is why the whole adpocalypse started.

heelydon

Advertisers indeed give many shits about where their advertisements appear

Not really no. Youtube advertisers and an extremely small group at that, only started caring about their advertisements after activist groups started trying to "guilt by association" card the advertising groups for the youtube algorithm.

Hell, even by looking at the widely considered failure of how youtube's experiments with meeting these criticisms have gone, it becomes even further questionable as to why anyone would want to try and replicate it, not to mention through a handful of meaningless subreddits --- especially when it isn't even the purpose of the entire thing in the first place as per their own statement.

ezpc450

What you're saying is your own personal opinion and it doesn't reflect industry standards and requirements at all. Stop preaching about a subject you have no experience or knowledge of.

Robotic_cock

Citation needed.

Common sense. People won't always tell you their true intentions, especially when they have something to lose by telling you them.

Riiiiiiiiight, as if advertisers gives a shit about their ads being placed in a republican, democratic or sports subreddit.

Am i missing something here? I don't see anything of what you listed banned, so what you said makes no sense.(unless you consider some of those crazy subs to be republican, but i don't)

heelydon

Common sense.

Your "common sense" is to ignore their statement and substitude your own opinion it.

Just to be clear - there is no common sense in that.

Am i missing something here? I don't see anything of what you listed banned

You are missing something. I spoke in broad terms about if advertisers cared about politics on one side, politics on another and something broad which takes up most of the activity otherwise on reddit - the sports subreddits.

Within that field it is clear that if advertisers actually DID care, then their model on reddit would never had worked in the first place.

[deleted]

[deleted]

heelydon

I know that the reddit advertising way for years have worked in that fashion and it has continued to grow. The way reddit works it is practically impossible for their advertisements to not be shown everywhere regardless, so advertising on reddit in the first place means that you merely reach the larger pools of people, which is ultimately exactly what advertisement desires.

In that sense, Gilette could care less if their advertisement is in /r/latestagecapitalism or in /r/sports

If we were to dig into that somehow NOT being a thing, then you'd automatically also have to question how advertisements are weighed, how they are shown on which subreddits and for which demographic it targets - something the reddit model doesn't work for.
