Revamping the Quarantine Function
While Reddit has had a quarantine function for almost three years now, we have learned in the process. Today, we are updating our quarantining policy to reflect those learnings, including adding an appeals process where none existed before.
On a platform as open and diverse as Reddit, there will sometimes be communities that, while not prohibited by the Content Policy, average redditors may nevertheless find highly offensive or upsetting. In other cases, communities may be dedicated to promoting hoaxes (yes we used that word) that warrant additional scrutiny, as there are some things that are either verifiable or falsifiable and not seriously up for debate (eg, the Holocaust did happen and the number of people who died is well documented). In these circumstances, Reddit administrators may apply a quarantine.
The purpose of quarantining a community is to prevent its content from being accidentally viewed by those who do not knowingly wish to do so, or viewed without appropriate context. We’ve also learned that quarantining a community may have a positive effect on the behavior of its subscribers by publicly signaling that there is a problem. This both forces subscribers to reconsider their behavior and incentivizes moderators to make changes.
Quarantined communities display a warning that requires users to explicitly opt-in to viewing the content (similar to how the NSFW community warning works). Quarantined communities generate no revenue, do not appear in non-subscription-based feeds (eg Popular), and are not included in search or recommendations. Other restrictions, such as limits on community styling, crossposting, the share function, etc. may also be applied. Quarantined subreddits and their subscribers are still fully obliged to abide by Reddit’s Content Policy and remain subject to enforcement measures in cases of violation.
Moderators will be notified via modmail if their community has been placed in quarantine. To be removed from quarantine, subreddit moderators may present an appeal here. The appeal should include a detailed accounting of changes to community moderation practices. (Appropriate changes may vary from community to community and could include techniques such as adding more moderators, creating new rules, employing more aggressive auto-moderation tools, adjusting community styling, etc.) The appeal should also offer evidence of sustained, consistent enforcement of these changes over a period of at least one month, demonstrating meaningful reform of the community.
You can find more detailed information on the quarantine appeal and review process here.
This is another step in how we’re thinking about enforcement on Reddit and how we can best incentivize positive behavior. We’ll continue to review the impact of these techniques and what’s working (or not working), so that we can assess how to continue to evolve our policies. If you have any communities you’d like to report, tell us about it here and we’ll review. Please note that because of the high volume of reports received we can’t individually reply to every message, but a human will review each one.
Edit: Signing off now, thanks for all your questions!

Fair enough.
So this is a way of making sure that advertisers don't find their products displayed on racist subreddits, "alternative truth" hoax subreddits, or other such 'unsavory' corners of Reddit?
Does the "Won't appear on r/popular" also apply to r/all?
landoflobsters [OP] 2,184 points · Sep 2018
Yes -- it does apply to r/all.

Does this mean The_Donald will be quarantined?
EDIT: I love how the admin responded to a Star Wars sub with a meme an hour after I asked the same question regarding The_Donald that was ignored.
ZorglubDK 254 points · Sep 2018
^ as per how frequent those three rules are broken, they should be...but nothing but silence from the admins about t_d
*edit:* Sources (going with journalists instead of reddit posts, of which there are plenty calling out their rule breaking though):
\"r/The_Donald has repeatedly been accused of offering a safe harbor where racists and white nationalists can congregate and express their views, much the same way that Trump’s campaign is said to have mobilized and emboldened those same groups. And indeed, r/The_Donald is home to some pretty vile comment threads."\
\" The moderators of the_donald have a long history of banning people who overtly break "rule three," which is the community's "no racism" rule, but allow codedracism that has long been used by white nationalists."
"February 10, the day after the New Hampshire primary (Trump's first victory), the subreddit had ballooned to 10,000 subscribers. That was when the subreddit started becoming a place where Islamophobia was not only tolerated, but was cheered on, and the extent of the subreddit's "no racism" rule, which replaced "no bigotry" in February, was explained.
A moderator told users to stop reporting instances of Islamophobia, indicating that the subreddit was a safe place for people who hate Muslims: "Jesus Christ people, stop reporting Islamophobia. We don't fucking care about our 'Islamophobia problem' AT ALL!""\
\"/r/the_donald has a worse record than most of the fascist-flavored subreddits that have been quarantined or banned. They have participated in vote manipulation, brigading other subreddits, and doxing"\
\"Supporters of President Trump have created and circulated a document with the names and addresses of anti-Trump activists, some of which were culled from public petitions. According to BuzzFeed, the document was posted in a pro-Trump chat room on Saturday night before being taken down, and contained contact information for thousands of people.
The database of names reportedly surfaced on the Discord server Centipede Central. Discord is a Slack-like chat service, and Centipede Central is basically a chat room on Discord created by members of the the /r/The_Donald subreddit. It appears to have been crowdsourced, as it contains detailed instructions for finding the home addresses, phone numbers, and employment information of those who oppose Trump."\

You've totally convinced me with your anti-trump sources that somehow don't have evidence, "accused of" or use ML to compare it to a banned sub.
Maching learning is incredibly complex and it's fraught with opportunity to color it's effectiveness with biased learning data and inappropriately applied algorithms.
Waving a "science" magic wand doesn't tell you anything other than someone used ML to get the answer they wanted.

Added a few sources to my previous comment.
Plus there's all this from reddit itself:
r/AgainstHateSubreddits on the_donald or on t_d
r/stopadvertising on the_donald or on t_d

r/AgainstHateSubreddits is a doxxing/ brigading cesspool of rabid SJW racists.
if there is a sub that needs to be banned - its them
BadJokeAmonster -14 points · Sep 2018
Question for you, if you think T_D should be removed do you think r/fragilewhiteredditor should be removed as well?
As a fun tidbit of info, did you know there is more than 5 moderators who are moderators on both r/againsthatesubreddits and r/fragilewhiteredditor?
They seem to be at least as full of hate as the people they brigade.
ZorglubDK 10 points · Sep 2018
Haven't seen that sub before, so my understanding of what they do and how much they break rules is superficial right now.
- but, if they repeatedly brigade posts/other subs, then yes, in m opinion they should be banned after being warned say twice to cut it out.
BadJokeAmonster 0 points · Sep 2018
Here is an example of r/fragilewhiteredditors brigading this thread.
https://www.reddit.com/r/FragileWhiteRedditor/comments/9jgh9r/fragile_white_redditor_whines/
Look into the person who posted that thread. Look at how many subs they mod. Guess what? They mod that sub too.
-I even got a death threat because of my response to you.-
Admittedly, it is a really lame one, but it does lend credence towards the subs I linked to you being toxic.
It is kinda sad actually. I'm hoping for something better. (One of like 5 from the same user.)
BadJokeAmonster -12 points · Sep 2018
r/fragilewhiteredditors is blatantly racist and the point of both is to brigade.
There is also overlap between their mods and r/topmindsofreddit.
Look into r/chapotraphouse if you want another example of a left leaning toxic cesspool.
All of those brigade. I've reported >100 posts between them where they were blatantly brigading. (They posted a link and within an hour of that post the linked comment went to -100.) Not one of them were deleted nor did the admins take any action whatsoever.
I've even reported ones were they said people should downvote the comment. (Or upvote.) No action taken.

We are talking about T_D... Your defense is "what about what about".
BadJokeAmonster -3 points · Sep 2018

ballsack_gymnastics -5 points · Sep 2018
Ugh. Is it not valid in this case to bring up other offenders of these rules, which is the overall topic that t_d was brought up in?
Stop parrotting buzzwords and don't reply if you don't have anything to say.

What do you have to say about the rule set and moderation of T_D? If you were given the task of setting up a set of rules to further discussion and eliminate these problems what would you put forth?
It does seem like a lot of these "examples" are through a certain heavy ideological bias, however. I do not see how these posts are threatening or bullying. No one is threatening a person's being, no one is demeaning someone with the purpose to harm them emotionally.
Is it crude? Yes. Is it unwarranted? Arguably. Does it break the rules of Reddit? No.
peanutpretzel 24 points · Sep 2018
Spend like two seconds looking at this comment thread and you will find the links for crazy alt rights calling for violence.
You are exceptionally oblivious or you are just trying to protect a hate sub

fucking idiotic bots.
that sub should be banned for brigading and doxxing
[deleted] -23 points · Sep 2018
This is the best you can come up with? The first two are obviously sarcasm, not a call for violence. The last one I don't see a problem with at all. The 3rd goes from one link to another, I'd like to see specific posts in context.
Even so, other subreddits have much more offensive comments at the address of Republicans, Trump supporters and non leftists in general, and no one is calling for them to be banned.
peanutpretzel 24 points · Sep 2018
Wow you are a terrible person
