First lap’s gonna be fucking intense if it’s a wet race tomorrow.
I love a wet race, but I need a couple more weeks of emotional break since Hungary.
With how today went wouldn't be surprised
I wonder if that is where that bump is that Lewis mentioned in interviews
No the bump he was talking about is in the middle of radillon going up the hill
Yes that is in fact how puddles work
Yeah, people were making the argument that the conditions were okay because Russell went through there before Lando but that could have been bad too. If Lando hadn't crashed sooner or later someone else would have.
Yeah. Russell already got loose at Raidillon, and aquaplaned on the Kemmel straight. Lando was just the second car to go through Eau Rouge, if not him, its likely someone else would've gone off (though not necessarily in the same manner).
Absolutely, and when they aquaplane on the straight, it's a dice roll whether someone goes off or not. Even if no one had binned it up Eau Rouge and Raidillon (highly unlikely), someone would've flown off on the Kemmel straight.

I agree that he possibly pushed too much but I think the chance is high that someone else would have too and I think that it definitely happened because the track was too wet. BUT what I originally meant is that many people said that the track was safe because Landos' crash was just a mistake and that George proofed that by not crashing when in reality he could have crashed several times himself due to the aquaplaning. So maybe that particular crash was to some extent on the driver but that doesn't change that the track was too wet and other accidents were to be expected. And of course we can continue to race in wet conditions but at that moment it was not just a bit wet we had standing water and aquaplaning on several places of the track.
Holy he nearly lost it as well without making any errors. Might be one of the worst decisions from the fia this year.
That and no VSC after blowouts at Baku, they're a shambles this year
the Baku one still boils my blood. tyres blowing out unexpectedly, debris everywhere and Max left stranded on the fastest straight with everyone passing at full speed. it took minutes, whole MINUTES before anything was done.
It makes me incredibly angry too. I was so angry that weekend, it was a shitshow
We've seen much worse decisions being made in Brazil. Everyone was angry they red flagged the race two times before it eventually got going again.
It's a fine line between conditions being just okay and worthy of a red flag. I wouldn't call this 100% FIA just because Lando crashed in one of the most difficult corners on the calendar.
I wouldn't call this 100% FIA just because Lando crashed in one of the most difficult corners on the calendar.
Did you not watch this video? The Kemmel straight was flooded. It is 100% on FIA.
I'm sure there are many variables at play. Don't forget Spa is one of the longest circuits on the calendar. It's notorious for it's inconsistent rain and weather patterns. One sector might be almost dry while another part requires the use of full wets.
It's a dynamic and ever changing situation that requires hard decisions. Whatever the decision is there will always be something that could be done differently or all out controversy.

Everyone can have their opinion.
We don't know what was going on in the stewards room, we can only speculate.
They could have easily sent the SC to test the track again and it would delay q3 a few minutes if everything was fine
I think calling the decision easy or obvious is way over-simplifying things. I’m not saying they were right or wrong, I think people should just be honest about the realities of the situation for the stewards.
For starters, let’s say two drivers complain on radio. Drivers complain about all kinds of stuff to get an advantage, they know the radios are open and the teams use them to make a point and help themselves. Ex: They complain about track limits and it works. It’s not because they deeply care about the rules, they want every advantage they can get (or prevent others from getting advantage). My point is, you can’t just listen to one or two drivers and make a decision for everyone else. If I sucked at driving in the wet, I’d complain like hell on the radio to try to get a drier track.
Without sending them out, honestly how do you really know the right decision by looking at things from the stewards box? They can see a small part of the track from far away. That’s it. There’s no measurement device (I know of) for water on track across the circuit. Maybe only the risky parts? Who cares about a bunch of water in the middle of a hair pin?
It’s not a simple decision with simple rules, it suffers from HORRIBLE data inputs (they also only get a few rainy races a year to learn from). Many have been doing this for years and years, it’s not easy.
Also, who is to say that he wouldn’t have pushed too hard in slightly drier conditions and ended up in the wall there? Would that have been more acceptable to us? I mean, VER put it into the wall last year on the parade lap. I’m not a fan of his, but he’s obviously a fantastic driver.
Aquaplaning on the straights. Ridiculous green flag conditions.
Is there a point in wet tyres at this stage though? We seem to go from Inters to Unsafe.
Depends on the circuit. 99% of the tarmac could be perfect for inters, and wets would be slower, but if a small section has a lot of standing water on it then it would be too dangerous like we saw today.
Wets are good if there's continuous rain which isn't too severe to rain in.
If there's a wet track but not raining anymore it will go from wets to inters quite quickly because how much water they move.
Track just evolved that quickly between q2 & 3 that it went past the stage for wets.
To be fair Lando is probably mid or post crash when Russell says that
No fairness fairness to be given, they're in charge of determining if conditions are safe or not to race in. They failed
As an aside, I find the Latin vs Greek difference of aquaplaning vs hydroplaning fascinating. Curious why as Americans we went for the greek.
In my language we just say the equivalent of "waterplaning". Why fuss about with Greek and Latin when you can just say it plain and simple!
Aquaplaning on the straights.
Where else are you supposed to aquaplane?
.....corners?
How? If you aquaplane in the corner, you're either forgot to brake or sliding so much that you will crash anyway. In any case, for that amount of water, you should be already aquaplaning carrying the higher speed before the corner.
You for sure can aquaplane in the second part of the corner when you get back on the power. No clue what you talking about, i swear people dont realise the cornering speed of these f1 cars, this is not a fiat on a highway.
Yea, SC should have run few laps before Q3.
“It feels safe on a road car with basically nothing in common with an F1 car, so it is safe to drive on with an F1 car.”
Do you think that logic is sound?
Another thing that's rarely mentioned is that Pirelli's modern wet tyres are shit. We either have intermediate conditions or red flag conditions nowadays and we didn't have this kind of aquaplaning during the tyre war era, or even during the V8 era.
I remember Kimi and I think other older driver's saying the wet tyres during the refueling era being a lot better at dispersing water.
Edit: Found an old thread https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/dfwjmm/kimi_raikkonen_f1_looks_ridiculous_not_running_on/
Holy shit we didn't even get to see that it was this bad.
There's a red light on his wheels that lights up as he recovers from the aquaplaning. Could this be one of the warning lights drivers get when there is a caution on the track?
Either way, it doesn't seem like Russel is calling for a red flag, more that he is stating that a red flag has been shown.
The light is when George is talking, and the radio track has a bit of a delay. You can see in the beginning it lighting up when they are talking.
I thought the delay would be the case. He still seems to be reacting to the red light rather than calling for a flag though.
He called for the red flag immediately after recovering from the aquaplaning, the red flag lights went on when he was in the apex of the first leg at les combes.
The red flag light on his dash lit up as he was recovering from the aquaplaning though. Which would fit with the radio delay on the feed.
I can barely see the red flag lights in his dash where I thought they would be (each side of the screen). Did they even turn on?
EDIT: Just looking at Vettel's onboard, in his car the red flag lights are very clear and blinking
There's one in the middle of the wheel, just above the rotary dial at the centre of the wheel. It is a slow flash, and stays on for a while.
The one in the middle of the wheel is the radio mic light I was talking about, notice it's on in the beginning of the video, when Russell is talking to the team.
The red flag lights are each side of the screen, and are part of the common dash for all teams.

For some reason, it's incredibly dim in the Williams, i looked at the Baku footage and even without the rain you can barely see it.
Agree I think he is just stating it, I think you can see a red flag on the right when he says it. At least I think it's a red flag or a light, at the 1 min 17 mark right before he says red flag there is something red on the right hand side. Also as he goes around the next corner you can see the red flag lights on the track... I really think he was just exclaiming the stewards have red flagged it
I mean yeah its easier to say in hindsight that the session should have been Red Flaged from the start but Russell was happy to go for the lap and once race direction saw Russell aquaplaning on the straight it was already to late.
Agreed. Had Norris not crashed, I'm 100% certain they would have red flagged it after seeing Russell down the straight.
No driver seemed happy to go for that lap, Russell, Norris and Vettel complained, but they won't back out on their own and miss the chance to set fast laps in the small time they have

He was also going much slower and still almost crashed.

The kerb isn’t why he crashed it was the oversteer, the rear tires are under massive load you switch from Eau Rouge to Radillon and they didn’t have the grip to take it.
Which was caused by hitting the kerb. Since it lifts the car slightly and causes some unbalance.
Max took the same kerb in his pole lap. I couldnt find more onboards atm but guys were taking that kerb. I think it did unsettle the car but it also only oversteered in response because that was the wettest part of quali.
I was just about to post the same thing.
The audio appears to be way out of sync on this. You can clearly see that he was speaking seconds before we heard anything.
Looks like he called for a red flag a few seconds before Norris crashed and the race was actually flagged. Not in time to effect anything though.
Is that him asking for a red flag or saying that it's come out?
This should be required viewing for Brundle and his apologists.

A crash in qualifying is always a red flag, especially with that much debris on track and the cars location.
In a race it probably would've been a red flag as well.

He means that the track conditions at the corner where Norris crashed were not red flag worthy. I.e. there wasn't so much standing water that Norris aquaplaned and crashed, he just dropped it. He doesn't mean that it shouldn't have been red flagged after the crash (I don't think there's any argument about that). Admittedly the comment wasn't totally clear though and I can see why it could be read differently.
How did the safety car miss this? Maylander took a few laps before the official session start to check up track conditions, I think he would have spotted that.
Is he not calling the Lando red flag? Instead of asking for one?

Sky IT proceeded to show this at least 5 times in the red flag break lol

F1TV pit lane channel showed it several times too, did it really not get shown in the main broadcast?

I saw it all in the f1tv main and yeah, this wasnt shown, they showed several times Vettel saying to red flag before the norris crash, but nothing about Russell
pyroaxis 4 points · Aug 2021
Was on ESPN2 and not once was this shown. They kept showing either lando crash or vettel making sure he’s okay. They also specifically noted that it was his mistake regardless of the miserable track conditions.

I had both their onboards up, live, and just as I sighed in relief after Russell saved his rear on the straight, Norris’ picture went tornado mode in the corner of my eye.

Yeah, I’m all for them racing on the rain but if you can’t drive in a straight line, then you’ve probably got to concede that it’s a wee bit too wet!
Very nervy towards the end of the Kemmel straight with how twitchy that was.
Stunning driving from Russell though to put that car up on the front row!

Lando takes slightly more. George doesn’t take the inside curb going up Raidillon but otherwise the difference is pretty minor. I would agree that Lando probably loses it because he takes the inside curb but George doesn’t lift until he has to saw at the wheel when he comes out of Eau Rouge. George was just as balls to the walls he just got a bit luckier.
