Just coming here to say I think this bot is very useful. I don't want all the negative comments to get you down.
When I see a sub I don't recognize, my first reaction is to check the top posts. This saves me time on mobile, and it's not obtrusive.
Thanks for your contribution to Reddit.
If you could work with RES to add this as a feature people could toggle on or off, it might make everybody happy.
Thanks for the kind words. Could you elaborate on what you mean with integrating with RES, sounds very interesting
I'm not sure who to contact about it, but I think the RES team might be interested in implementing a subreddit preview feature (kind of like their media/wiki preview) that users can customize.
For example, when somebody includes a link to a subreddit in their post/comment, RES might add a button next to it that could be pressed to open a preview panel with customizable info about the sub, like:
The advantages are that this would be personally customizable and less obtrusive - the disadvantage is that it would only be available to RES users. I don't know what proportion of Reddit uses RES.
I'm not an expert on coding or anything, but I think it would be pretty easy to inject something like that into HTML and make your own Chrome extension, separate from RES, if you wanted.
Hope that helps!
Hmm that's an interesting idea. I think a lot of the people that find the bot useful are mobile users and wouldn't have access to RES or browser plugins. Also, afaik, RES already does do something with linked subreddits by showing the subscriber count and creation date. I'll post it as a feature request for them but I'd have nothing to do with it.
If I may offer feedback, people link to other subreddits in comments ALOT, so this seems a bit intrusive and unnecessary.

You're banned by /r/BotBust, so you'll (eventually) be banned by the 260+ subs that use BotBust.

Thanks a lot for the heads up. Anywhere I can get a list of those 260 subs?
I thought you could follow the breadcrumbs, but apparently not.

Then look at all the subs that they moderate.
Your bot is also also being regularly reported as spam, so I wouldn't be surprised if the admins get involved.

Right, thanks. Most of them I'm already banned from and the rest are the "ImagesOfX" subreddits so not a huge blow all things considered
This should not be an opt-out thing. It should be opt-in. It is spam otherwise.
fuck off
Please don't: write bots that reply to comments or send private messages without solicitation.

Side note, what is it you're after with doing this? Genuinely curious, not meaning to sound like a dick

Nothing really. I use reddit a lot and I thought a bot like this could be useful to people. Soon enough I'll make the source code publicly available and leave it running autopilot on a server (is currently on a free server).

Only wish I could stop this fucking thing from clogging up others comments.

Already 948 opt-outs, not including the 261 subs that subscribe to /u/BotBust who eventually ban your bot. Maybe you should take the hint that a lot of users and subs don't like your bot.
Divide by 2 because of me replying "Done", then subtract all the people with troll replies, the people who aren't mods and then the people who post in the wrong thread (like yourself). I think karma is a decent measure and 65k in just over a month speaks for itself. Also, most of the people who love the bot message me directly or reply to the comments themselves so you're not getting the full picture :)
comment karma is not a good measure for a bot that is constantly posting. they will always have high karma.
Comment karma only counts on score of 2 or more so it's not like posting 10,000 comments will result in a minimum of +10,000 karma. Also, I don't know of a better measure.
I fucking hate this stupid fucking useless pointless shitty bot. Fuck off and die you fucking prick.

Why is this not opt-in? blacklist me, or better yet, delete this bot
It might be wise for you to follow what everyone else was doing in this thread and type out your username in the comment :)
For the record, I find your bot incredibly useless/annoying. It's not at all difficult to click through if you want to see the top posts for a given subreddit; the bot seems to be solving a problem that doesn't actually exist. It's especially awful in subreddits where most posts only get a few comments.
Do you handle blacklisting manually?
It doesn't seem like it would be hard to automate a blacklist system, for example by PMing the bot with a #blacklistme tag.
If sent from a user, the bot won't reply to that user anymore. If sent from a subreddit via modmail, the bot won't post in that subreddit anymore.
How about a link on each comment to send a PM to the bot to remove a particular comment after it's posted? The bot would only accept this PM from the person who the bot had replied to. I have seen other bots using this system successfully.
It's semi-automated. I have to manually run a "check-blacklist-post-for-blacklist-requests" program to add people to the blacklist. I already have this PM me method prepared but I'm not sure what to do about the API calls. Because, for me to check my inbox and act on it at some frequency I'd have to delay (or even skip) my comments scanning for a time - just trying to work that out before I add it
You looked at for a map
Sorry I couldn't get to you in time
I go to Egypt
Yeah, I saw that you banned me already so I didn't blacklist it. You shouldn't be receiving messages then.
suck it bot, don't reply to me
Delete this stupid bot. Blacklist all of reddit
Hey /u/sneakpeekbot you have learned what you can do.
Not you should learn what you should not do.
Please take your bot and your code and your keyboard and your phone and shove them up your ass you fucking asshole.

Opt out for /u/translator-BOT, please.
(Bot post immediately following a bot post is not a good sight...)
I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:
If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads. (Info / Contact)
Your bot is bad, and you should feel bad. Seriously, this bot is maybe the worst one on Reddit. Someone should shit down your neck for creating it.
Done
/u/alamaias please, though if there is ever a specific command to call the bot i can see it being handy sometimes. So feel free to let me know if it does :)
Done
You actually can summon me directly, for example: "/u/sneakpeekbot /r/memes, /r/botsrights " (up to 3 subs). I just haven't made it public yet so you're now in the know ;)
Optout. This should be opt-in.
Lol nobody would even know about it that way?
fuck you and your shitty bot
This is a nice student project but it is annoying as hell, please make it summonable rather than automatic.
u/Vertibim also r/4pr1l
You show up EVERYWHERE! At first it was fine and thought it was convenient, but then i have to see this bot in EVERY SINGLE THREAD.
can I un-block later? Don't necessarily mind the bot but I was trying to help somebody with Reddit earlier and they may have gotten confused by sneakpeekbot's reply, don't want that to happen again if I need to reply to them more haha
also don't get why people are being so fucking vitirolic here, this bot is actually useful unlike the stupid non-mobile linker bot (and the owner of that one doesn't even have the decency/competence to make a thread like this, instead proposing that people "stop using mobile links" to cut down on replies)
This should be opt-in, not spamming every goddamn user until they opt-out.
Please blacklist u/sneakpeekbot
blacklist /u/AstroPhysician
And please stop making bots, I can't post on reddit without 3 different bots replying to me
This bot is cancer
Only take subreddit blacklist requests from moderators of that subreddit
