Kirito takes half a season to find Asuna

Asuna: hold my beer fam!!

seitaer13

That half a season only takes a couple of days.

StornZ

Lol so did this too.

killertortilla

To be fair he knew where she was, he just couldn't get there.

naeads

Now she didn't know where he was but she can get there. Woop!

Rim_World

We still don't know if he's there. Well, at least in the anime.

MidouLii

"Asunas Pissed" - This episode in two words.

The episode otherwise was EXACTLY what I was looking for and more, some expose on what everyone but Kirito was doing while he was stuck, some further revealance of key plot points and Asuna being a complete BAMF. I was not expecting that reveal and it was an AWESOME way to end the episode.

About the only thing I didn't like is we really didn't get to see what EXACT TYPE of car it was that Klein was driving. But that's just me being a hyper Klein fanboy :P.

In technical terms the animation of the building and the helicopter really shows how much this series has improved in animation quality, I'd even hazard to say where now better than Ordinal Scale on the quality meter, perhaps.

XRaider927

The car he's driving is a Subaru Impreza Hatchback MY2015 (and no not the WRX nor the Levorg wagon or even the Impreza's crossover twin the XV)

MidouLii

Well I officially love Klein more now.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

God forbid he drives a Mustang.

(This is a reference you'll find in the Calibur short arc.

LKincheloe

Now I remember they're making a 4-door Mustang...

XRaider927

well mustangs have passenger seats in the back depending on the model

amisamiamiam

He would have taken the horse, but they are notoriously hard to handle.

SKStacia

You beat me to it. "Asuna is pissed" was my very first thought after finishing the episode. And damn, after my week, this is EXACTLY what I needed.

A bunch of things have been mentioned, but I was thinking of something crucial that hasn't: the sound editing. You have that loud intro of the Laughing Coffin raid and the reprise of the moment of the attack on Kazuto itself, and then it goes to the hospital. It's so quiet, but picking up on Asuna's breathing and her footsteps, along with the other background they add, is just so visceral; it's great!

furosuto81

Considering I also drive a white hatchback (though not a Subaru), Klein won some more points in my book.

StornZ

She pulled some super spy shit there. Kikouka's reaction to Rinko being the one to sneak her in was great too.

Pleylnox

When i saw that blondy i was like - yeah it must be asuna :D

I love... LOVE... how badass Asuna was in this episode. She was so so cool!

And her English was so good too!

rkraiem100

She was SOOOO much better in the LN

BRONsexualToLA

I really like this new art style

OneMillionRoses

Well done Asuna! Give that jerk your best death stare! He deserves it! >:-)

Seeing the UW on the monitor while they're looking at it with ease made me sick.... Imagine finding out your world is nothing more than a computer program made by mortal humans who can delete it with just the push of a button and they can see what you do... Gross, that's why I hate it when people play God and Sao is perfect at demonstrating this

LJ-696

Just think of it this way. Underworld is basically a Truman show on steroids

OneMillionRoses

This makes it even worse than it already is D:

LJ-696

Yep but I’m not far from wrong

ChKliffnme

Its like that episode from Rick and Morty with the miniverses or whatever they were called.

[deleted]

Kirito: And in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and go fuck yourself!

SKStacia

They don't say the name straight out, but there's an implied reference to "The Truman Show" in Volume 10.

Writer_Man

Never mind that, they need Kirito. Just imagine how willing he'd be if they killed her. Not to mention, right now Asuna and Kirito are the only reason they got Rinko. Then, of course, the fact that Asuna is mentioned by name in a tell all book and is famous among the student body at her school of SAO survivors.

Neatly wrap that in a bow of her friends knowing who she is and one of them being Yui who can and will reveal to Japan if anything happens to her and they're pretty much screwed.

[deleted]

Until Kirito wakes up he'd have no idea, but yeah, the rest of it is good points

Writer_Man

Sure, but if they need him after this, they aren't going to screw that up. Kirito is by far the best full diver in the world - one of the longest divers, someone with interest in the tech, and someone who pushes the boundaries of what is and isn't possible in a virtual world.

[deleted]

Fair point, Kirito is a genius when it comes to games, always pushing them to their limits

Ryuuji_Gremory

I don't think the JSDF (assumedly since they addressed Kikuoka as Lieutenant Colonel) wants this to become a scandal.

Think about it even though a lieutenant colonel was involved and had the power to move the police they failed to apprehend a serial killer whose identity was well known, then they abducted a minor that became a victim to that serial killer thanks to their sloppy work, after that they let a high-school student infiltrate their top secret research facility and now on top of that they would kill that high school girl, that comes from a rich and influential family, because they were incompetent.

Not to mention that I doubt they could secure Kirito and Rinko's cooperation when they dare to lay a hand on Asuna and they just told them their cooperation is important to the project.

Meltedsteelbeam

Are we going back to Underworld next episode? Just curious.

wtrmlnjuc

We’re still in the setup phase of Alicization. A few more episodes before it really gets going.

maverickdgg

The set up is actl taking way longer than I thought it would, I'm probably just impatient since I read the LN and know how good the arc is :D

srcLegend

Can't wait for volumes 15+ to be released

gsimenas

According to the title of the next episode, no.

KurayamiHikaru

Should be episode 7.

BippityBorp

Ok, I never really took much notice (or at least cared about) the new art style much, until the SAO scene, it looks great

_johnning

Yeah, it’s amazingly well done. Feels very natural to SAo as well.

moonxvii

The title should be "Asuna's Death Stare"

BleedingUranium

It'll just be 22 minutes of Asuna staring right into the camera, doing nothing but blinking. Other characters will casually walk by in behind every so often.

It's like the Christmas fire log channel, but Asuna's death stare.

raithosu

JUST MONIKA ASUNA

Ubway

I will try to summarize as much as I possibly can.

Without a doubt, the best episode of Alicization (all were excellent, but this one exceeded the limits). SAO was able to bring four brilliant flashbacks, so brilliant and enlightening that they reinforced my conception of how excellent this work is in the matter of linking concepts and ideas.

The first flashback, in which we started the episode, is not only a great pick-up of the second season (Yes, 2nd season ... final battle with Raffin Coffin's Players), but is also used symbolically to introduce two things central to the plot: Asuna's change of feelings, from melancholy to determination (further developing romance between her and Kirito), that motivated all the disguise and arrival to Ocean Turtle; and the introduction of an innovative concept, the reversal of the dynamics of Fairy Dance, breaking not only the wrong criticism that "Asuna is a character that does not have strong personality", but also contributing to the strong bond between her and Kirito (and Yui , for sure).

The second, even more brilliant, is a subject that I always point out in SAO: How excellent antagonist is Kayaba Akihiko. A villain who not only influences the world during his life, but also after death, not only in a negative way, but also positive deaths, idealizing applications such as Medicuboid. In the episode, besides addressing the more subjective aspect of Kayaba (making him more human) and his social relation, we were still rewarded with a re-explanation of the purpose for which he created Aincrad: A genius, lost in his own world, sees himself in a position to give life to the dream he possesses, materializing his dream in the virtual and being his creator, becoming "God", as he watches the various SAO players live their dream and experience what they have experienced. Without doubt, poetic and very symbolic.

The third and fourth flashbacks also refer to Kayaba (note how this character has impacted so much and is always present in the various anime relationships). The reinstatement of Medicuboid and also the distribution of the World Seed were very pertinent recapitulations here. It is necessary to applaud not only the revival of concepts such as Augma, taking advantage of even the film Ordinal Scale, but also the rationality on which SAO was based, inasmuch as the search for Asuna rests on the extremely plausible and rational concept of Yui, an AI, to be able to access and modify systems, rather than in script conveniences.

In summary, phenomenal episode. Note 10. For those who have been able to read this far, without abandoning the text, this is it. Alicization is sensational.

BleedingUranium

I definitely read the whole thing, please do more of these as we go through the season. :)

Spockies

Yep, in a sentence: Kirito goes through what his previous female companions went through all in this neat package called Alicization.

amisamiamiam

I'm still lost on the flashbacks. I'm currently watching GGO again and hope that brings me up to speed. For me this episode was a big huh? Then again I always had a hard time when writers jumped scenes to different locations and times. LPT: Stay in school

I have a feeling Asuna has never lost a game of hide and go seek just by seeing how fast she found Kirito

Writer_Man

Your first mistake was thinking Asuna's mother would let her play hide and seek.

[deleted]

It's perfect!

Literally just last episode I was asking what was happening irl and boy did they deliver!

Glad they didn't waste time with Asuna's reveal since it was pretty obvious, but that's one more scene in the OP that we understand now!

As always Klein deserves more screen time

Also, Lieutenant Colonel Kiuoka?

I want more of Kirito's story now but I also want more of Asuna's, hopefully they can both keep up being awesome storylines

Onto the stuff that I didn't like, and, I mean, super minor gripes, but I don't like how Yui can just hack into security cameras, the fact that Kirito left on a helicopter could easily have been figured out by the distance between different responses from the heart rate monitor (which apparently only sent data once every 10 minutes?)

And Asuna needing a pep talk from Yui was a little bit weird, that dialogue could have been made better imo like this:

Asuna: looks upset

Yui: Same line about Kirito not giving up looking for her in Alfheim

Asuna: looking determined "That's right Yui, now it's my turn to find Kirito"

[deleted]

[removed]

[deleted]

That's a pretty good point, I didn't think about it that way, though with Kirito even though he was diving into a game he had to use the nerve gear that had trapped him for 2 years to do it, which is also very intimidating.

I guess I just want Asuna to have a bit more of a constant oomph, it's hard to explain, like she goes from acting like she can't do anything to being a fully fledged badass real quick a few times in the series, like I want to see a little bit more of the in-between.

I'm doing a really bad job of getting my thoughts across, but hopefully you can get the gist of my thoughts

ReceivePoetry

In many ways, she's content to let Kirito lead....until Yui or Kirito or her friends are threatened. Then out flies AsunaTheBadAss. She's not arrogant about her money or connections or brains, but she will employ whatever tactics necessary to protect her loved ones.

daspaceasians

That tease at the end. God Asuna is awesome... don't fuck with the 2iC of the Knights of the Blood Oath!

TheTenk

Really enjoyed the Akihiko flashback where he discussed his dream.

Esvald

Ah I thought I was the only one. Learning more about Kayaba is always welcomed.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

My only qualm isn't with the show itself, but rather Crunchyroll's subtitles.

  1. I'm more used to Oriental order (Yuuki Asuna instead of Asuna Yuuki).

  2. They got the year wrong. It's supposed to be 2026 already.

Mitty2004

Yeah I was confused when it said 2016

BleedingUranium

Fun fact: It was 2016 in the original web novels (which were written in the mid-'00s), but Kawahara added 10 years to the story when they were published as LNs.

UmbraGhost

Same. One other minor gripe I had was that the subtitles say Ms. Kirigiya when Asuna refers to Kazuto's mom/aunt as oba-san, which in my understanding is more informal and shows a sense of closeness. I just feel like they should have left it at "auntie".

BleedingUranium

Hmm, I use Western order for everyone. :P

Why thumbnail is SSSS.Gridman though?

[deleted]

So glad they changed from the absurd National Treasure levels of leaps in logic to a more straight forward method of finding where kirito was.

lol great movie but some parts of it were just hilariously "lolwat"

Alright now I feel like the story is going somewhere

CrimsonKingXIII

It was good to see what was going on outside of Underworld this episode. I knew right away though when they didn't show the face of Rinko's assistant that it was Asuna. I do like how they had to swap out the photos though because they realized that if they didn't the disguise probably wouldn't have worked. I hope there's more episodes like this that shows what the characters outside of Underworld are going through.

emil_jacob_2000

Yokuzo Rasu.

Also, Yui is an Ignis confirmed.

WimpyKids50Official

Anyone get a SAW vibe from that song inside the Ocean Turtle, for a second I thought Jigsaw was going to show up

Axgrant

I ha e been waiting all week to see this episode and I’m serious, I LOVED IT, SO MUCH THAT IM REWATCHING IT. Hands down though episode 4 was still my favorite. They also got the Subtitles wrong when Yui was talking about where they got a signal back from Kirito, she says 2026, but the subtitles say 2016

maxlovesbears

Up to this point, I love everything about this new season. I love that they’ve included GGO, ALO & even SAO AND Ordinal Scale AI devices. This is a series that I can watch over and over and be completely satisfied.

I can’t wait to get back to Kirito to continue his journey! The action fighting in ‘Departure’ was AWESOME.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Jay911

Not sure if your times refer to the reveal of the Turtle and/or the helicopter, but the helicopter is a fairly precise representation of an Airbus H145, a pretty nice machine.

LJ-696

Next week Asuna’s time in jail for infiltrating a highly secretive military facility, collaboration in computer misuse and espionage.

Good times.

But in all seriousness good episode. Hated some of the medical stuff because of a few inaccuracies. But loved the portrayal of all the feeling and emotions that Asuna is feeling and going through.

[deleted]

Loved it! It's amazing! Great job A1 Pictures! Thank you for the great work!

Dark_Blade

Asuna shoulda been a blonde.

furosuto81

Nah...we have Alice for that.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

As a person who likes redheads, why?

Spockies

Lol... well there's someone for you too soon.

KiznaiverParadox

To be honest, I was pondering how will the writers explain Kirito body in the real world after the altercation. It was pleasing to know where Kirito's body was being taken to, and the efforts of Asuna traking him down. But, this episode was pretty slow in pace. I just hope Ausua's arc will not bog down the series.

Spockies

Asuna moments never bogged down the story for me while reading Alicization. There wasn't ENOUGH of it tbh while a lot UW stuff was being slower and the story on Asuna's side was picking up the plot.

Crimsonavenger2000

Sigh 6 more days for episode 6 ;_;

_johnning

Asuna’s face looked uncharacteristically different after the reveal, her face (cheeks) looked much more wider than usual. Threw me off for a bit, but she looks great all episode and was a total bamf.

furosuto81

Comibation of lightning and angry expresssion. Also, no hair braid changes her traditional look a bit.

AsnSensation

Were they listening to kalafina in the car?

gsimenas

They were listening to YUNA's longing (from Ordinal Scale).

AsnSensation

Thx. I didn’t have time to watch the movie yet. Is wear the beginning of the song sounded exactly like kalafinas to the beginn8ng

GoldRedBlue

Kajiura recycling herself again lol

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

"More of the same" isn't bad. Especially if the same is great.

BomB191

UGHHH I just want to binge the shit out of this!!! but I have to wait :( So good.

Tensz

That amazing Fate zero insert song we got this episode!

ZhunCn

It's actually from the SAO movie, Ordinal Scale. It's one of Yuna's song -- longing.

Simusar

This is the episode I was really hoping to see, where we came back out of the "game" to see what happened after the attack in the first episode.

delcanine

Damm, can't wait for the next episode! A part of me wants to read the LN to suppress the suspense...

BleedingUranium

Feel free to read all of Volume 9 if you want, that was covered by Ep 1-4. :)
