A reminder….

West Ham didn’t sack David Moyes, he chose not to renew his contract and the club decided against offering one.

2 games into the season and most of the non-WH sphere is obsessed with Moyes and Kudus. I can’t take this

tomomalono [OP]

It’s driving me around the bend. Fuck Kudus.

But I’m tired of people thinking they’re right about Moyes, he wasn’t sacked. It was mutual, the fella didn’t want to renew his contract either. He’d had enough.

gameofgroans_

Idk I can’t remember exactly but he said something about it on the rest of football podcast. Something like he thought they’d agreed another contract and then the board changed their mind last minute.

But I still totally agree with you and don’t blame him for wanting out - it was basically another example about how badly he was treated imo. Hate how everyone is bringing it up now.

tomomalono [OP]

I think he held off signing off on it, but then after poor results, the board retracted the offer.

He had to go to be fair, it was an intangible position. But I don’t blame him for not wanting to stay.

gameofgroans_

Yeah I think you’re right.

Yeah I agree, I’d say it was the right time but ir was probably the right time a month or two before, feels like it soured the great time we had together tbh. But just seems like our board treated him awfully too

Any_Froyo2301

He wasn’t backed by the fans or the board. I think he deserved better. The fans expectations are completely unrealistic.

no_nebula7337

Contract offer was withdrawn, you’re wrong.

tomomalono [OP]

You’re wrong. If you read I have made reference to that. But he was presented with it, about December, and he held off signing it. It was then withdrawn.

no_nebula7337

Yes, so how does that make me wrong? He didn’t reject it he just wanted to wait to the end of the season. He talked about this on The Rest is Football. Quite clear.

Reptar-4-Mayor

No argument from me man

[deleted]

Should be obsessed about Sulli

MrDaveHedgehog

A better reminder is the run of results we had in the final calendar year of Moyes’ reign.

He managed 4 wins from his last 24 matches in charge.

We were fucking horrific under him for a long period of time.

tomomalono [OP]

I’m tired of the Moyes argument. Constantly.

Eric_Hitchmough87

I think a better argument is to look back a bit further. Moyes picked up 1.21 points per game from January 2022 until he left. This isn't a very good record, barely better than the likes of Big Sam and Lopetegui.

OrthodoxDreams

How much of the post January 2022 slump is due to us going deep into European competitions three years in a row with a squad without the depth to do so.

Moyes deserves some of the blame for that due to his reluctance to rotate his squad, but I'd have bee intrigued to see if he could have turned things around last season without European games to play.

iloveuzaba

Then you should be happy with how it turned out since he’s left if it was so bad 👍

Be careful what you wish for, you reap what you sow, etc

Eric_Hitchmough87

What on earth are you on about? Genuinely one of the most nonsensical posts I've ever read. You actually come across as if you are Moyes himself here. Weird.

iloveuzaba

What doesn’t make sense, Eric?

You’re presenting your “argument” for why releasing Moyes was the correct decision. If it was the correct decision, even with all the evidence to the contrary since, then I can only assume you think we’re better off now than if we’d kept him?

gravitybelter

And have we all forgotten how painful the football was to watch as well?

iloveuzaba

Hi, we finished 9th

MrDaveHedgehog

Hi, what you said doesn’t change the fact of what I said.

Hope this helps.

iloveuzaba

Yes it does? You can cherrypick a bad run of form if you like but ultimately we finished 9th. We were 6th most of the season before running out of steam. Hardly “horrific” compared to our current state, is it?

MrDaveHedgehog

Yes it definitely is. Even Potter, who is quite clearly hopeless, has more wins from fewer matches than Moyes’ final calendar year, which included such gems as 0-6 v arsenal, 0-5 v Chelsea and 2-5 v Palace.

MOODALI

That 4 wins in the last 24 stat lacks so much context, but who cares, let's just have our agenda against Moyes. The season he left, we ended 9th in the premier league, and were in the quarter finals in europa, with no backing from the board in January. Moyes was doing miracles with this club, and now that he's gone, the true nature of the club is showing. I can't say West Ham fans don't deserve this.

tomomalono [OP]

Are you a West Ham fan?

MOODALI

Yes. Are you?

tomomalono [OP]

Of course bud. It was just your wording at the end of ‘I can’t say West Ham fans don’t deserve it’, made it seem like you weren’t is all.

West Ham fans dont deserve this. We were promised so much and delivered so little. Under Moyes we were just kicking the can down the road.

Moyes came from Everton who were similar to West Ham, he made the most of what he had on a budget. But the fella didn’t want to stay in the end either, he’d had enough, fans turned on him, board hung him out to dry.

But no, West Ham fans don’t deserve this, the fans demand to have their promises fulfilled, as well as not have to fork out hundreds of thousands each week to see us ship 8 goals in two games.

MOODALI

We were promised so much, and we got it, 3 years in Europe, a european trophy, we started making big signings like Paqueta, Kudus, Scamacca.

We will never be a Man City, just forget about it, we are a midtable club. We will have good years, and we will have bad years. The reason we are in this situation is because Moyes overachieved with this club. If the board and fans actually backed him, we'd still be up there in the standings. The fans are too negative, all because of these youtube propaganda channels. Also, i hate this BS "we were promised", what are we, children?

tomomalono [OP]

Yes, but what you don’t get is, the board moved us from Upton Park, they’ve lined their pocket with grant asset. We’re in a ground that isn’t ours, they’re taking a point not constantly.

Signing Scamacca, Paqueta shouldn’t be a once every now and then for a premier league club. They were what 40m in fees at most? That’s pocket change, Everton just signing Dibling from Southampton from that? And they got turned over by FFP last season?

MOODALI

I understand the first point, although it has nothing to do with Moyes. Moyes made europe our European dream happen, and now all progress from those times have been pissed away by Tim Steidten and David Sullivan.

Dibbling is a championship player. Paqueta, Scamacca were eyed by top Italian clubs, and PSG for Scamacca.

StrykerNightowl

The only agenda is vocal “Moyes In” crowd acting like there weren’t issues the season we won the Conference League.

He most likely would have been sacked that season had he not continue to win in the Conference League. But let’s forget that part. 9th in the Premier League while only winning 4 of the last 19 league games says a lot about how weak the league was that season.

I personally was fine with Moyes staying but he needed to change something because what he was doing wasn’t working. To act like everything was fine because he got 9th is incredibly laughable. Cracks showed, then painted over, then showed again.

MOODALI

As I said before, teams have good and bad seasons, most clubs that have to juggle european football and the premier league, struggle. Look at last year, Man Utd AND Totenham finished 15th and 17th while in Europe.

Yes we won 4 in the last 19 premier league games, we also got 7 draws. We got points in 11/19 games. 5 out of those 8 losses were to the big 6. Then we take into account the actual games where we are playing a backline of Aguerd and Injured Zouma.

On top of that, 2 of those losses were in between Europe league matches vs Bayer Leverkusen with minimal rest, while Fulham and Crystal Palace played a normal schedule.

11 April West Ham vs Bayer Leverkusen Loss

14 April West Ham vs Fulham Loss

18 April West Ham vs Bayer Leverkusen Draw

21 April West Ham vs Crystal Palace Loss

Then we had an actual rest for 1 week: We then Drew vs Liverpool after this.

Another Loss was fully the referees fault when we were up 3-1 to Newcastle, and the refs gave them 2 penalties that shouldn't have been (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV\_Oyp3ZCxw)

I personally was fine with Moyes staying but he needed to change something because what he was doing wasn’t working. To act like everything was fine because he got 9th is incredibly laughable. Cracks showed, then painted over, then showed again.

What needed to change was actual backing from the board, and Tim Steidten actually working with the manager instead of fighting for more power. "Cracked showed, then painted over" No, just look at context, Moyes has nothing to do with creating the cracks. It's always been the board's fault. Moyes been painting over the cracks left by David Sullivan.

StrykerNightowl

Just so I understand correctly, you’re saying the fans deserve this because of the decisions made by Sullivan and Co.? Because if anything it sounds like you recognize the real problem is Sullivan and not the fans.

MOODALI

The fans blamed most of our problems on Moyes though. That's why the fans deserve some blame. Even to this day, most of you are blaming Moyes and not the board for how that 4 wins in 19 season season went. You were literally saying that Moyes caused cracks, and he kept on painting over it. Like what do you not understand?

StrykerNightowl

At the end of the day, majority of managers will always get the blame because they are managing the team. He picks the team, sets up the style, and is the face of the team. One thing most of the fans would agree on is Sullivan is the biggest problem.

I didn’t say Moyes caused the cracks. There were cracks in his style of play where it wasn’t working. It showed during our league campaign. They were painted over because we won the Conference League. They then showed again the 2nd half of the next season.

MOODALI

You completely ignored the context again, and went back to blaming Moyes. This is why West Ham fans deserve to be in the situation that we're in. I at least got to enjoy the ride of our best years with the club unlike most of you. Back to regular scheduled programming of being an irrelevant club. This is my last message with you.

StrykerNightowl
PrisonersofFate

You mean like the Newcastle game we were leading 3-1 until Gordon cheated?

The Sheffield game we drew because of the ref literally fucking us?

The draw to Villa with two goals ruled out by VAR because why not?

The Leverkusen game were the ref gave them free reign?

They would have not made the season much better but we were fucking unlucky.

And we won 5 games, not 4 in 2024, because Europe doesn't matter when we want, it's known

MOODALI

David Sullivan's biggest ever mistake is not re-signing Moyes. Usually the fans blamed all failures in transfer window to "dithering Dave", instead of him.

StevenMarkW

Couldn’t agree more with what you’ve said.

[deleted]

I guess what most people are saying is what was the point of sacking Moyes if you go for Lopetegui, and then Potter.

The truth is a Sullivan wants people he feels superior to, people he can control and people who won't push too much.

Amorin was available and keen when Moyes went, but he talks too much for Sully.

thesimpsonsthemetune

Amorim was always using us to attract bigger clubs to his availability. He was the most sought after manager in Europe at the time.

tomomalono [OP]

Moyes wasn’t sacked. Again, he wasn’t sacked. His contract wasn’t renewed. He didn’t want to. And the club didn’t want to offer him one.

Whoever the next choice of manager was always going to be a risk. But the fans wanted to see a change.

[deleted]

Yes, but sacked or left is all semantics. I'm not arguing against you, I'm just saying, the hindsight effect now is... It didn't get better, no one put any real effort into making it better, the club is in a mess

MoyesNTheHood

Imagine if he got the backing in his final summer and winter windows by getting the players he actually wanted in

Sullivan fucked him over like Sullivan is fucking Potter over. Sullivan is fucking the club over.

cpashei

He did get backed, he spent £35m on JWP, £30m on Vlasic, £30m on Aguerd, £30m on Zouma, £20m on Cornet all of whom had or have almost no resale value, not to mention a big money half season loan of Kalvin Phillips.

His later seasons were awful, Sullivan absolutely backed him and he wasted it.

MoyesNTheHood

His last summer we sold Rice. He wanted McTominay and Maguire and we got Mavropanos and JWP. We sold scamacca and didn’t bring in another striker so we only had Antonio.

In the jan window we decided to get rid of Benrahma and Fornals and then get nobody in.

RoachEWS

Imagine if he'd been backed in January rather than having players sold from under him...

tomomalono [OP]

Our form under Moyes was awful in the latter half of the season, the season before, we were in a relegation battle for 34/38 games. Didn’t it work out we won something like 5/30 games.

RoachEWS

As I said, imagine if he'd been backed in January. As for the season before, you're right. Terrible season 🙄

tomomalono [OP]

The thing is, he chased Kalvin Phillips like a dog with a bone. It didn’t work out, he got who he wanted and it didn’t work. But we were crying out for recruitment in that window across the board

HomieApathy

Nah. He wanted slabhead and McTominay also. We didn’t get them.

tomomalono [OP]

Yes, a very good point. But he did insist on Kalvin Phillips when them two didn’t come. He wasn’t back by going after them two though, I agree with you there.

HomieApathy

I thought the Philips loan was a good punt. I was very wrong.

pancakes1271

Imagine finishing 9th. And reaching the Europa League quarter final. What an awful season.

ajgedrys

4 wins in the prem after December, 74 goals conceded which is most we ever conceded in a premier league season ever, most goals conceded outside the bottom 3, but yes what a great season that was…

PrisonersofFate

Of course it was. We beat Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Brighton, Tottenham, went to quarter of Europe. That was fun enough.

[deleted]

[removed]

NobleForEngland_

We signed more players over 30 in one summer under Lord Tim than in five years under Moyes.

RoachEWS

He didn't get backed so that it looked acceptable to not give him a new contract.

tomomalono [OP]

You’re right, google is free, from West Ham’s own website

‘West Ham United can confirm David Moyes will leave the Club by mutual consent at the end of the 2023/24 season, when his contract expires.’

Mutual consent.

[deleted]

[removed]

tomomalono [OP]

We won 4 games from December to May.

My stance on the Moyes debate and I’m only saying this once here.

He left by mutual agreement. He wasn’t sacked. As a man, a person, with dignity and self worth, he was left in the lurch by the board. It wasn’t fair to offer a contract to him and take it away, either offer it to him, or let him know sooner he’s not getting renewed. As an individual, the way he was treated, by the board, was disgusting.

But there were Moyes Out banners at away games, I remember them at Forest, Arsenal and Palace, I think. He had to go.

[deleted]
RoachEWS

I remember Lyall out banners. Should he have gone? Ridiculous argument.

HomieApathy

The vast majority of supporters had turned on him.

Chappietime

Moyes didn’t want signings. He made it clear that he preferred a small team.

PrisonersofFate

But did he want Fornals and Benrahma to be shipped out on deadline day? Honest question, I don't know.

Chappietime

My memory was that he and Benrahma did not get along, and I think he did want him gone. Fornals, I’m not so sure.

PrisonersofFate

I don't think he had that many problems with Benrahma. I don't buy it man. He was playing most of the games, half of the time as stater, and as sub. He started him in the European Final, let him shoot the penalty...

Even if we wanted gone , I'd bet my left nut he wasn't thrilled to let him go on the last day with no reinforcement

RoachEWS

There was a lot of stuff going round on X at the time that he definitely did not want to lose those 2 and both him and steidten tried to block it - unsuccessfully. I'm not on X any more though.

PrisonersofFate

I don't imagine a manager wanting to lose two rotational options he was using to leave like that.

Either Moyes or Steidten unplugged the fax

thesimpsonsthemetune

To me, it seemed really obvious that Sullivan was trying to be smart and cancel the deals because they didn't find replacements. And then UEFA threatened to investigate and he shat himself.

[deleted]

It sickens me that our club is owned by some wanker who made his money exploiting women.

tomomalono [OP]

I don’t know, Karen Brady seems to enjoy it

funklepop

We low balled him for the renewal before December and declined -- then he gave up/ was undermined. Board fucked it.

pancakes1271

You guys will see us lining up in the Championship next season, still crying about the last 5 months of a 4 and a half season reign which was the most successful the club has had in 40 years.

What did we gain from binning of Moyes? Tell me how we have improved?

Chappietime

It would have been more of the same with Moyes - 76 goals conceded, 2 wins after Jan 1. Switching at least gave us a chance to see something different, and hindsight doesn’t change that.

tomomalono [OP]

Very well said

tomomalono [OP]

Have you read my post? We didn’t bin Moyes.

‘West Ham United can confirm David Moyes will leave the Club by mutual consent at the end of the 2023/24 season, when his contract expires.’

From West Ham’s own website, it was mutual consent. West Ham didn’t sack Moyes. Moyes didn’t want to renew his contract either.

Learn to read

pancakes1271

Hope you have enjoyed the post-Moyes era.

Personally I preferred when we were playing in Europe, winning more than we ever have under any permanent manager ever, and lifting a trophy. But each to their own.

tomomalono [OP]

I don’t disagree, I much preferred playing in Europe.

But we only finished twice in Europe spots, the 2022/23 season we were in a relegation battle for 34/38 games. The season after we didn’t finish anywhere near the European spots winning only 4 games from Christmas to the end of the season. But that doesn’t prove you’re point.

You’re wrong on West Ham letting Moyes go, and the point of my original post was to remind people that it was a mutual thing. Sick of people saying we sacked Moyes or binned him off.

PrisonersofFate

But we only finished twice in Europe spots,

How many times did it happen the past 20 years? How many times will it happen in the next 20'

tomomalono [OP]

We got in under Bilic and Allerdyce into Europe? Also after the FA Cup, it has happened in the last 20 years. Also for the next, probably fucking never at this rate we’re bang in trouble

PrisonersofFate

Bilic once, allardyce last year was on fair play. We then got 6 red cards in 10 games and struggled in Andora and Malta 😂

tomomalono [OP]

And? But your question was how many times have we gotten into Europe in the last 20 years?

PrisonersofFate

To finish in the European spots. That's what you said

HomieApathy

Supporters binned him.

floorscentadolescent

Not sure how you can argue that we could have continued with someone who had 4 wins in their last 20, Potter has about the same and fans are calling for his head too

NobleForEngland_

If you done a great job and still had someone brought in above you to undermine you, you’d probably walk as well.

tomomalono [OP]

I don’t blame him for walking at all, he was hung out to try by the board and they treated him poorly.

But I’m sick of seeing people and posts saying West Ham sacked Moyes. It was mutual agreement.
