It’s in limbo

MyNipplesNooo

Lots of MAGAs in here it seems. “Daddy hates Colbert so I should too!”

Yikes

thevokplusminus

You need to spend less time online.

euler88

Just give me Matt Berry as Tom Bombadil and send me home.

Normeaga81

Jackie Daytona!

Seeks to dispel fears that Colbert movie has been put on hold. Says:

"We have ‘The Shadow of the Past,’ which is in the scriptwriting stage..."

Which says nothing about it either having been put on hold or not.

If it was in the scriptwriting stage & Warner Bros put it on hold then guess what? It's still in the scriptwriting stage.

PointOfFingers

I think they will keep Shadow in pre-production and see how Gollum goes. The new mega film company needs franchise movies.

I just want to see more LOTR movies made in NZ. This fills out the story nicely.

DocDraculaThe2nd

I like Colbert so this is not a knock on him. These rumors always start with “this is still being developed etc.” but the reality is, they are waiting to see how this Gollum movie does. If it shits the bed, you don’t hear shit abut this movie.

TokiStark

Of course it's gonna shit the bed. What were you expecting from the game?

FazedEclipse2

Its not the movie of the game. It's the hunt for Gollum set between the Hobbit and Frodo leaving for Mordor...

TokiStark

I didn't say it was. It's still a shitty premise for a movie. Don't get me wrong, I love Andy Serkis as much as everyone else. Particularly his role in Andor... But it's not exactly the basis for an interesting story.

lIlIIlIIllIllIlIIIll

Who cares? It’s more LotR. If it blows, ignore it. If it’s awesome, rejoice.

TokiStark

I couldn't agree more

lIlIIlIIllIllIlIIIll

I’m sure you were the same guy saying, “why do we need a whole series about Andor”?

TokiStark

No. What makes you think that? I'm still going to give the Gollum movie a chance. Going into it with low expectations is a good thing. If it's crap, I'm not disappointed. If it's brilliant, I'm thrilled. Cynicism isn't an inherently negative trait, just because some people use it that way

TokiStark

The final movie has like 10 ending scenes. Why does it need a sequel?

I know there's so many ending scenes because I reeeeally had to pee by the end of it (Yeah, I got an extra large coke for the 3 hour film) and the screen kept fading to black and I was about to leg it to the bathroom and then another final scene kept popping up. Over and over.

CommercialFloor2033

Because they don't have the rights to adapt the more interesting prequel stories most likely.

Key_Cut975

Same, I had to pee so bad. I wanted to yell at Frodo to get on the damn boat.

TokiStark

That one got a genuine laugh out of me hahaha

Colbert knows the lore perhaps better than anyone. Im here for it.

SalletFriend

Noooo they need to respect DA LORE

Hire tolkiens most autistic nerdlinger to write a film

Nooooo this is bad for reasons!!!!

The_Mighty_Rex

Colbert is a bigger fake nerd than Kevin Smith or Patton Oswald. I have yet to see a single instance of him "flexing" his Tolkien knowledge that is actually impressive. He always just makes references to slightly deeper than surface level lore that anyone who has read the books would know. He's not some uber nerd or Tolkien purist. The fact that he wants to make whole ass movie about what is essentially 2 pages of general exposition by Gandalf proves he's not some bastion of the lore and nerd-dome and is purely in this to try and stay relevant after his shirty tv show is gone.

Procyon-Sceletus

Um, kevin smith has wrote multiple comic book runs and owns a comic book store and has a whole podcast talking about nerdy shit. How nerdy do you have to be to be called a real nerd?

Mr_Bo_Jandals

The fact that you think this is “2 pages of exposition by Gandalf” shows you don’t know what you are talking about.

Because a) it’s six chapters of Fellowship and b) Gandalf is not present in those chapters or narrating them.

MattTreck

I don’t know much about Patton but that’s an insane thing to say about Kevin lol.

Theesm

I mean it's also the whole Barrow Wights stuff, Tom Bombadil and even the whole Witch King of Angmar/ Fall of Arnor stuff would fit right in there.

Plenty of stuff to put in these 2 hours

WistfulWannabe

Shirty? I mean, he certainly did wear shirts most of the time, but why be unfair to the pants and jackets, man? They mattered too.

ForThose8675309

🤷‍♀️ Worst thing that happens is this causes people watch/read the original

greennurse61

Like the horror of an Amazon show has been. The terrible casting in the show makes the books harder to read.

RoseyOneOne

Wait, a sequel? What’s the story?

ToadilyRosily

Return of the King has a pretty prolonged section that basically says "more stories will continue here or further away, evil never goes away forever, please go write them". Obviously lots of people have written there own Tolkein inspired fantasy but I don't get the hate for just making a sequel? If it's bad it doesn't matter. It'll probably have some good ideas. And I like the story so seeing that would be enough to be interesting.

DartVader6

Stephen Colbert is incredibly passionate about Tolkien and I would completely trust his vision for a sequel would honor the original work and not exploit it as others might (cough cough a hobbit trilogy?!)

Usual-Language-745

And he is fully self funding, distributing, and producing it right so a studio can’t change the vision?

DartVader6

I hadn't taken into account that I can't predict the future when I formed my opinion. I guess I'll stop having them.

Usual-Language-745

Do you not know that movies are massively expensive and the people who pay, make the decisions?

DartVader6

Do you not know that we're talking about the writing? He is writing this out of passion, compared with someone trying to cash in on an established IP. It's as good a starting off point as you're going to get.

Xijit

Because Trump hates Colbert & all of his yes men own AI bot farms.

apollo7157

Clickbait trash

ShiningGort

Imagine wanting this fan fiction to get made lol

fungilingus

“Well I already fucked it up with The Hobbit so whatever”

rosebudthesled8

Aww he thinks Ellison is a normal person who makes normal decisions. Jackson should know better. It's dead if Colbert is connected to it because Trump hates Colbert and Ellison is a MAGA goon.

Hey man, if that’s where your mind went first, then I hope it pans out for you. I don’t care much about who fictional characters love personally. Just not as invested, idk. I gotta go to work man. Hope you get your gay Legolas bro!

MyNipplesNooo

Elves have always been pretty gay.

Pallandolegolas

Gay as in happy. Of course.

Detachabl_e

Source:  Them Keebler Elves packing all that fudge in them cookies.

MotorPace2637

That a hope or...?

No-Lion54

I am okay with that as long as it is relevant to the story. Maybe Morgoth just needed a good night kiss to not be a douche anymore.

atreidestrek

This is a very bad idea and should be canceled.

RedWizard78

Oh the movie I have no interest in?

Errentos

Then why comment?

RedWizard78

SOCIAL media. Not ‘stay silent’ media

Xraxis

So you comment on literally everything you claim to have no interest in? I doubt it. It's called social media, not anti-social media.

Errentos

But you’re not interested in it… no one asked you to comment. Like if you dislike it, or if you like it - cool, share your thoughts, but if you just have no interest then commenting makes no sense unless you’re just looking for this sort of engagement

Comfortable_Put_4139

Hopefully this never gets made.

DrD000MM

Not saying Colbert isn’t a superfan or isnt familiar with the Hollywood machine and movies being made in general. But to say he’s a screenwriter who could tackle this type of thing is pushing it.

sooley6

They’re trying to bleed every penny from this. I hope it bombs

Mindless_Truth_2436

You hope people lose their jobs?

DrD000MM

Why do you guys always do this?? I hope they catch murderers. “What about hitmen? You want them out of work!?” It’s always some xtreme bs like this. As if there’s no work for people in the film industry outside of this film. Get a grip.

Mindless_Truth_2436

Steven loves LOTR. What’s the problem?

DrD000MM

Other than being a capable screenwriter idgaf

dstx

What a dumb take. What about hitmen? The comparison doesn't track. You're just angsty.

adavidmiller

As opposed to what? You just hope that every stupid project ever succeeds so people stay employed?

lol, be serious.

Also, it's a movie. The jobs are done. Success is good for their resumes, but the market as a whole is what will keep them employed on new projects. So yeah, I'd rather success be elsewhere.

Ok_Falcon275

Why wouldn’t you want the movie to be good, lol?

adavidmiller

I would? My only take is that the comment about jobs is ridiculous.

Ok_Falcon275

What’s ridiculous about it?

Muisan

But why male models?

adavidmiller

My first reply was what's ridiculous about it. I'm not going to talk in circles for your sake.

dstx

Nah man your reaction is ridiculous, up in arms about nothing.

jl_theprofessor

We don’t know if it’s stupid as we have not seen the product.

adavidmiller

I agree, which is why I replied to the person saying something nonsensical about losing jobs rather than the person complaining about the movie.

Mindless_Truth_2436

Stephen loves LOTR. What’s the problem?

D3athCom3sEasy

Colbert is trying to make a new LotR??? No please God no.

Xyldarrand

Dude literally beat Jackson's lore master in a Tolkien-off. He's worth trusting

SnooWalruses3948

I don't have any doubts about Colbert's knowledge, my doubts are with the premise of the film.

I don't think there's enough meat there to sustain a good film. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Ganjalfthegreen1

If Colberts Tolkien knowledge isn’t in doubt then his love for the lore shouldnt be either. Im sure he will write something that doesn’t shit all over tolkein (like rop)

Thick_Broccoli_3932

Say whatever you want about the man, he knows his LotRs lore. I was iffy at first, seeing how enthusiastic he is talking about LotRs it makes me feel more confident he can do a good job with the IP.

D3athCom3sEasy

I have seen though with other projects of this scale for a franchise being lead by people who knew the lore of the product and still produced middling products themselves. I also feel a bit down on LotR in general being made today because of the disaster RoP has been.

Thick_Broccoli_3932

Yes it can turn out bad but I’m saying his love for the books can also make it turn out good, time will tell.

Rings of power is also not canon in the main film universe and it goes against a lot of tolkiens writings, these new film projects are however in the Peter Jackson universe, so that gives me more hope.

D3athCom3sEasy

I'll be honest i think my hopium tank has run out but hey I mean you never know. There have been a few gems lately in movies. If anything its good to know people still care about making more faithful LotR stuff.

i_am_carver

Why? I bet you have no actual reason and need to Google some shit before you reply to this, if at all, which would be a complete grasp at straws.

D3athCom3sEasy

No my reason is that I dont believe Colbert has proven himself enough of a writer to win the faith of confidence in a project as respect as Tolkien. While I dont doubt his knowledge I dont think its unreasonable to say we have not been treated with much to be happy about with LotR. This feels unwarranted and uninspired. Its not a political difference or anything about his show.

TrickyChildhood2917

Right

departedhunter

The Tolkien universe deserves better than Amazon and Colbert.

coreoYEAH

What wrong with Colbert when it comes to LOTR?

Jynx229

Nothing, this guy clearly isn't familiar with his expertise if he thinks there is so much better out there.

Main-Cheesecake3287

Colbert loves lotr, Amazon crushed fallout as best as they could.

srlandand

This isn't Amazon production btw.

GeneralZex

Ironically the showrunners Amazon hired for RoP never ran a show before, but were huge Tolkien nerds…
