Is my art that bad ?

I guess I don’t know anymore honestly , I was trying to raise money to get my books for UNI , we were asked suddenly to get . Comm was around $5-$10 , TAT around a week two max since this is a flat sketch and I’d even throw in an icon if anyone asked me . But I’m just going to resell the books I have from last semester tbh I think I’ve gotten to the point doing art is useless I’d sell my tablet but I use it to take notes

Personally, I don't usually comissison jack fiddle sticks, but I enjoy your art. It's good and you're only going to keep getting better 😁 Try not to let nasty naysayers get ya down

Don't ever stop doing art for you. Monetizing your talents and artform will always invite misplaced criticism that will make you question everything and lose confidence. I like your art a lot. People have a point that commissions are a really difficult and competitive market to break into and honestly? Regardless of skill level, it isn't a reliable source of income for anyone right now.

But genuinely, please PLEASE don't ever stop making art. Don't stop sketching. Don't stop drawing things that appeal to you or make you happy.

I used to spend hours at a time when I was young just drawing characters for my stories because it made me happy. But more and more I started criticizing myself until drawing itself became stressful because it was never to the standard I wanted it. I haven't seriously and consistently draw in probably around 10 years. And it used to be everything I did. Please don't end up like me--especially over money and the opinions of other people.

I think it's more that if you need money in a hurry, this is not a sensible way to try to get it. Because the market is saturated and building up a following that might want to buy takes time.

also maybe look at the length of the neck on that person in purple. It's very long

mrsdickey

that middle comment and bottom comment 😬 no normal person would resort to generative ai lol. your art is great, odd that your post attracted these weirdos.

DesignerOk6581

They're both AI trolls if you look up their names to avoid hidden profiles.

MangoPug15

Marketing is a huge part of getting commissions. It's not just about having good art. It's especially hard to get commissions right now because the economy is not great.

Low prices tend to attract more customers who do not respect the work artists do. Those are the same people who are more likely to use AI. If you have an established social media audience, your fans might be happy to take you up on affordable commissions because they already have an emotional investment in your work, but if you don't have an established audience, you're going to have a harder time finding people who want this type of commission. It's not impossible, but you have to market yourself better than every other artists doing the same thing.

My advice, as it always is with posts like these, is to stop asking reddit about your work.

People on the internet can be huge jerks.

They will say your art is garbage, they will say your art is worth nothing, they will say you should give up. Why? Who knows. There's no benefit in it.

You are the only one who can set a value on YOUR time and YOUR effort.

There will be people who want your style. There are people who actively seek out human artists BECAUSE of AI and it's affects on artists. There will be people who will pay you what you're worth.

Posting questions like "is my art worth $___?" "Is my art good enough for commissions?" "Do you like my commissions?" Usually ends with people who have never bought nor sold art, usually never drawn a day in their life, telling you they would pay you 3 dollars max for a piece that took you 10 hours- they don't know what they're talking about. Quit asking them

sketchyygoat

There's a subreddit called r/starvingartists where you can offer your services if you like, but there is a lot of nsfw stuff on there so please be careful and specify if you dont do nsfw work-

I'm sure there are other places like this too where people can find you. You just have to find them.

So many people hate AI, a lot of businesses lose customers when they use AI art, a lot of people won't read a book or listen to albums with an AI art cover. People still need artists. Don't let anyone tell you you can't make and sell art just because of AI.

SleeplessSeas

The term "emergency comms" or "urgent comms" doesn't do anything. It won't make people buy your art faster.

Yes you can open comms if you want to do freelance art. But it's not a viable way to make money quickly, otherwise everybody would be rich off of "emergency comms" lol.

edit: and your art isn't bad, it's just flat and grey.

Sad-Web-3889 [OP]

That makes sense tbh My style is usually more colorful but now that you pointed it out I see it , I think the uni stress is getting to me even in that . Thanks

SleeplessSeas

Hope it gets better soon, your art is really cute. I especially like the character on the right. Super pretty

JohnnyBizarrAdventur

the colors are a bit bland and your lines aren't confident. It's not that your art is bad, it's that the market is oversaturated and you need professional skills to find clients. Don't start commissions in the hope of rising money. It's not a secret that the majority of artists are poor.

PerformanceAnnual209

If I can sell this ych, anyone can sell comms. Just advertise everywhere, be social and try different things. If people don't like one approach, try another thing you like to do. Skill doesn't matter as much as people think. Art is subjective. You just need to find the people who like your stuff.

I really hope the comments doesnt discourage you from continuing to draw, especially if you draw cause you like it! Your art is good☆! I love the style, the pose and the happiness from the characters. Theres of course areas that could be improved like working on some contrast and shade! ♡

doggirlsupreme

I dont think your art is bad, but i do think anyone without a pre-established group of fans that regularly commisison them is going to struggle to break out in the market. The commenter seems to be trying to convey this sentiment as well, theyre not telling you youre bad, theyre saying EVERYONE including the veteran, highly skilled artists are having a bad time now because of AI.

setekii

Mfs just be saying anything nasty these days, your art is quite lovely.

Amidseas

No your art is good don't listen to their BS I got comissioned for 10$ before

mentallyiam8

Your skill level isn’t high enough for artwork to be in such high demand that it sells like hotcakes. That’s not to say that absolutely no one would ever commission you -someone might - but it certainly won’t be a steady stream of income, it would be more like the occasional raindrop. Most likely, you wouldn't be able to pay for books from seling your art.

This doesn’t mean you should stop drawing, everyone goes through this. No one is born a great artist. Keep working on your skills, and as for the textbooks - come up with another solution.

home_of_beetles

big dawg i’ll commission you rn

Boredoldm

No I like it.

_Cecille

I don't even how many posts, exactly like this one, I've seen today alone.

No, your art is not bad, it's not shite. It's alright/good but just not on the level (most) people are willing to pay for, even if dirt cheap.

I'm don't want to be mean about this, but personally, if I commission someone to draw sonething for me, I commission someone who's really good at it, and in those cases I'm absolutely willing to pay 150-200 € or more for a piece.

And something like you've shown in this post, I could actually draw myself, so for me there's even less incentive to commission you.

If you want to make money of your art, you have to be really good at it and I'm sorry, but you just aren't there yet. I'd like to do commissions myself but my art isn't close to being commission worthy either. I too got an awful lot of improving to do.

GetInMy_Tummy

You would certainly be suprised what people are willing to pay for, even with AI being a thing. I agree with most of what you said, but I have seen artists make decent money for their art because they built a following and are well liked, even if their art isn’t at Kim Jung Gi’s level of skill. Everyone’s tastes aren’t the same. and this art style might be worth paying for to many people.

Tilikum_183

I like this art style a lot I think it's really pretty!

Sad-Web-3889 [OP]

Thank you, it’s usually more colorful but I think the stress of UNi is getting to me lol . Might have to stop for a bit until I actually have time to do it

Confident-Till8952

Do what works for you.

But getting a non-art related job doesn’t have to be a shameful thing either. Sometimes doing art, as your only means for money can actually ruin the experience. Even when it’s successful.

So just make it work for you.

Is your art bad? Certainly not. There’s clear evidence of skill, talent and potential.

Is it a little derivative?

….yeeesh. In my humble opinion. But this is off first glance. And that alone shouldn’t be discouraging.

Mechs_and_Martinis

Just keep drawing. Again and again and don't get hung up on the haters because that's all they can do.

They're not entirely wrong that a lot of artists are seeking work now more than before, especially because of AI. It's a really grueling time to be an artist.

Keep creating for yourself, what you enjoy, but also study the masters, anatomy, flow of cloth, color, perspective.

Keep drawing and in a year see where your art is then compared to now. You'll have breakthroughs and down days but you'll improve if you keep drawing, I promise.

sneakyysalad

Try selling commissions tailored to specific fandom(s). Fanart commissions (especially ones on the cheaper side) sell really well in those communities, especially when you draw someone’s favorite character with that person.

The most commissions I ever sold was when I was in the MHA community, most of the commissions I did were of the commissioner with their favorite character or their favorite ship (you can check that out on instagram to see some examples, my account was @/leafydraws).

Honestly I think your work isn’t bad at all, and I’ve seen people sell commissions with less skill than yourself. My advice is to focus on contrast, as your colors are pretty flat. Go deeper with your darker colors and your shadows. You got this! 💫

Fabulous-Put8401

If you're doing art only to make money, you're doing it for the wrong reasons. The comments you shown are correct though, the market for this level of skill is saturated and your best bet for sales would be local events.

Soggy_Cat172

Your art is not at all “bad”!! It’s honestly amazing and I’d definitely comm? So I’m not sure why anyone’s saying stuff like that maybe just cus they only think “real” comms are super expensive so something?

MangoPug15

You'd definitely comm? Then do it. Put your money where your mouth is.

You don't have the money? You don't want a commission right now? You only commission on a certain platform? All of those factors are things OP needs to be aware of. OP's potential commissioners don't have a less complex life than you.

Their art is good. But getting commissions isn't that simple.

DesignerOk6581

You should consider drawing for indie authors. This is the kind of style that's popular for authors right now. Join some Facebook groups. Don't cold call authors, but post publicly in those groups.

The market for art commissions is saturated, but not if you go into niches, such as smaller romance genres. If you're reasonably fast and you don't charge a huge extra fee for commercial use, even better. I see art at your level selling regularly for $50+. $5-$10 is shooting yourself in the foot. It makes your art itself seem cheap.

And most authors aren't interested in AI art.

ColyQin

Not bad at all! I actually think you’ve done a lovely job capturing the connection between these two characters. Their expressions tell a story, which isn’t easy to achieve! ❤️
One little suggestion: try adding a bit more contrast around the overlapping arms and hands. It’ll help make the poses easier to read.
Keep going! You’ve already got something that’s much harder to teach than technique — storytelling through art. 😊

Nori_Dori0924

What the hell are they on about? Your art is great

emergold_dragon

Oh absolutely not I'd even say that's under pricing it

MangoPug15

It's absolutely under-pricing, but that doesn't automatically mean OP is going to get commissioned.

Aromatic-Delay9803

Looks adorable!!
