I don't know it for a fact, but he claims the dedicated Alibaba-China-ISO is available directly.
It is obviously not just a mirror, but with Chinese apps added and probably some apps removed, they don't trust or like in China.

He kind of is/was, even more famous than DHH ever was, depends on the crowd, depends on bang.
Much of the web of the 2Ks/2K10+ was absolutely dominated by PHP, RoR appeared and pushed Ruby, Python and PHP forward(their own ecosystems of web frameworks RoR variations and with time, their own unique identities), across timelines, it always was a small dent, RoR never caught up, it "died" together with PHP.
These days is all node and python, enterprise world is java/dotnet, they will die too.
There are solid systems still built on high human engineering in any tech stack these days, the tech salad is big and it will die, new concepts will be built, we were just given the means to express in human language, the ultimate programming language we ever sought for, what do we do with it ? we are boiling water, just like in nuclear reactors. The tech is amazing, the execution is abysmal

Because it's a) illegal in China to use VPNs, and b) using legal foreign services without VPN in China can be really painful. Example: common pip or conda mirrors are painfully slow, so just installing tqdm might take half a working day.

Is he really enabling the state or is he creating an omarchy that the citizens of China can run? I gues it could be seen both ways. Normalizing the state is always worse. I think he cares more about the spread of omarchy than he does any sort of individual freedoms other than his own.

You can barely connect to many Google services in China without a VPN. What do you think "No VPN necessary" for a whole OS would therefore entail?
IMO "No VPN necessary" = (most likely) a version of Omarchy approved by the CCP, including any "unsuitable" applications removed, no ability to install them (e.g. a TOR client), Chinese mirrors for all packages, and potentially even spyware pre-installed.
