Good thing I had those frame sliders!

I see a good amount of damage and no frame sliders.
There is a broken nub where the frame slider used to be. It looks like it was the firs thing to go.
Edit: Here they are. Don't get these. The bolts were a set of grade 8s I got from Ace Hardware.
Yeah...the bolt connecting my frame sliders to my bike are about three times as thick as the ones shown in the link.
They are essentially an elongated engine mount bolt, so the thickness is unfortunately set. I did upgrade to a stronger more brittle bolt to avoid having to dealt with a bent bolt extraction. I didn't expect the slider to shatter like that.
Cheap crap, don't cheap out.
That being said, frame sliders are to protect the frame, not necessarily plastics.
Woodcraft makes good sliders. I've crashed my GSXR 3-4 times and they've been the best. Most just break off like yours did.
Ohh sorry sir. You had grade 8 bolts. If you had paid only $0.50 more you could have got grade 9 and would have been protected.
Scumbag bolt meet scumbag insurance. Sorry I couldn't resist.
Congrats on not dying. I'm sorry this is happening to you. Good luck and thanks for the insurance tip.
Have you asked your agent about invoking your liability coverage? Your liability is what damaged the bike, in the sense that you shouldn't have gotten run over by that young lady ?
Looks pretty crunched... did it high-side or hit the ground hard somehow?
The girl pulled out at the last second, so I leaned hard to try to avoid. The first hit was definitely from the car, but I don't know what happened to the bike after that.
Should've told her, the pull out method is not very safe. Sorry I could not help it.
lol, well played
I have a bit of a concussion; normally I would not have left myself so vulnerable to a dick joke like that
Sorry OP, I've lost an '07 R1 as well. You must be going through emotional trauma of not having the bike right now, I was. Keep your head up, you'll be back in no time.
Did you tell her. http://imgur.com/DcFTFPG
But how's the frame???
The fines here in Canada are astronomical if you are caught driving without insurance... Minimum $5,000 fine up to $25,000 for the first offence only. $10,000 - $50,000 on second offence (caught driving without insurance). She should have been fined big time. It's too bad you got screwed.
But America = Freedom man. Don't push big government down their throats! They don't need laws and regulations, the free market fixes everything!
Just for the record, frame sliders don't mean your bike is bullet proof. My friends Z1000 has frame sliders, and they're not even mounted to the engine. So in his last minor drop, it actually snapped the piece the frame sliders attach to, and dented the tank. Frame sliders are better suited to racing where the surface is smooth. Once you hit rough stuff like gravel or grass, frame sliders offer little protection. I've heard of some riders not even bothering with them. I was considering making custom ones for my CBR but it's relatively inexpensive to get the side fairings repainted if you prep them yourself (paintshops do bulk paint days i.e. one booth session might be black on a number of bikes. At least that's how my local guy does it).
Frame sliders are better suited to racing where the surface is smooth.
Not really when your bike slides it usually goes off track. Then the slider grabs something like a small patch of dirt and then your bike becomes a flipping gymnast Better to get sliders with multiple points . Or at best a stunt cage for the engine
This is largely a myth.
perform a sue-ance
I would still get a lawyer and see what they can do, I don't know how it is in the state you live in, buy it shouldn't cost you any money to see a lawyer regarding this
Sorry about your bike. Could be worse though.
In Nova Scotia, insurance is mandatory. So not only would she have to pay to fix the bike, she'd need to pay a $1200 fine for not having insurance.
And now you know... Can save yourself the cost of some frame sliders next time.
Car pulled out in front of me from a feeder road right at the last moment. I could not avoid her in time. A bit banged up -- I think I'm going to get an ATGATT tattoo on my head after this. The bike didn't fare too well. :(
Edit/Update: Though she admitted fault and was ticketed, it looks like the girl didn't have insurance. Today is sucking more every minute. All my gear, my laptop, and the bike may just be my expense. I just made a list of all of my modifications to the bike and I had to take a breather after the 35th bullet.
Re-Edit, Edit: As many of you have pointed out, some states (including mine) have mandatory uninsured/under-insured coverage. I have this. It's listed as "Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist $25,000/$50,000" Like many of you, I thought; great, now let me go riding... However, this does not cover property damage -- only medical. Which in my case is moot since I already have health insurance. Adding uninsured property damage to my policy would have been a trivial increase in cost. I was just too stupid/naive to do it. Don't make the mistake I did!
ALWAYS GET COVERAGE FOR UNINSURED MOTORIST PROPERTY DAMAGE!

Take her to court? I hate suggesting this, but there's no reason you should have to take the financial hit.
preeminence 25 points · Jan 2014
If someone doesn't have car insurance, there's a good chance that they don't have enough cash on hand to make much of a difference. You can try to have their wages garnished, but that can take years.
SnoopyTheFuckDog 30 points · Jan 2014
As opposed to letting them get away with it? Doing nothing just reinforces their behavior.
obious [OP] 15 points · Jan 2014 · S1000RR | R1
He is essentially right though. I doubt a 23 yo hispanic girl driving a 1997 pos can cover the $10k+ expenses, but just didn't bother to pay the ~$300/year legally mandated insurance. It wasn't even her car. Had i known she wasn't covered I would have refused medical attention. Even my insurance provider basically said I was screwed.
I just hope someone else learns from this and upgrades their uninsured damage coverage. It's separate from uninsured medical! Even at a $1500 deductible I would be thrilled to have it right now.

Where I live, in Vancouver, not having insurance would get the car impounded and the driver would lose their license. This is nuts! We'd also be covered by our policy regardless. I do pay $180/month for my car and $70/month for my motorcycle...

Im from Vancouver aswell and I ride year round. I took two days off for snow in december but that was it
Though long johns are a must

For most here, may to october is about right. Many people dont ride when it rains and that happens a fair bit. Through the winter I just put on snowboard gear and its all good. Even on the two days of snow this year, the roads were clear by noon and I was back at it.
[deleted] 1 points · Jan 2014
In Quebec (To the East in Canada), the riding season stops December 15th and starts again March 15th (law). The season is often shorter due to inches and sometimes feet of snow on the ground. We still pay $2000+/year to ride ~8 months when we're lucky.
[deleted] 1 points · Jan 2014
Kelowna here : so far we have had snow for 30 days, so 335 on the road this year ! The downtime is a good time to clean and repair.

Not being her car actually may work out for you. You can probably sue her and the car owner. Increasing the chances of getting some money back.
[deleted] 2 points · Jan 2014
Pursue damages dude. She fucked you and anyone else on the road with her, fucking get some money back.

Wait, why are you out the bike and gear at all? Don't you just have to pay your deductible?
preeminence 5 points · Jan 2014
I mean, you have to weigh the pros and cons here. If you get hit by an un(der)employed 20-year-old driving a car that's older than they are, how far do you really think you're going to get?
I would ask the driver if there is any hope that they could at least partially compensate you for the damages. If they can't, barter for labor. If they still can't offer you anything worthwhile, their life is probably pretty terrible already. Do you want to make it worse?
SnoopyTheFuckDog 16 points · Jan 2014
Yes because if they're irresponsible shitheads then they deserve it.
gotnotimeforthis 12 points · Jan 2014
I don't get the whole They're poor so don't make it worse for them mentality. I'm not exactly swimming in money and I work hard for what little I have. I work hard for the bike I have. I have to do without some things others have so I can ride and feed my bike.
I take responsibility for my actions and any repercussions for any mistakes I might make or have made. I carry insurance. I don't have an iPhone gizmo. I have priorities.
Why in fuck do I have to let someone else not pay for their mistakes? Because they're poor? I'm fucking poor!! What makes anyone think I can afford to just let things go like that without any expectation of compensation?
Fuck that. Cry me a river while on your way to the pawn shop to sell your shit.

This.
I'd be livid in this situation, but at least the driver didn't turn it into a hit-and-run. It sucks that someone recklessly decided to drive without insurance, and then caused harm to OP. Taking them to court though, to garnish their already minimal income, just seems like something that will make the world a worse place.
Hopefully the girl learns, and hopefully OP's own insurance pulls through at least somewhat.
withabeard 4 points · Jan 2014 · '17 Z1000SX
So if you're a bit poor, don't get insured. The nice people around you can suck up the damage and not worry?
While I agree it would make the world a worse place for her to be more broke than she already seems to be. I do question, is the world a better place for her "lesson" to be that OP will suck it up and there are no repercussions for her actions?
There are plenty of people out there who struggle to pay their premiums, but do it anyway because it's the right thing to do.

So what happens in cases like this? I find it hard to believe op is stuck with the financial burden..
Didn't know insurance wasn't mandatory in some states.
happy_gil_oh_my_god 4 points · Jan 2014 · '98 Superhawk
Liability is mandatory. Probably a good chance he is stuck with it though, since the girl wasn't carrying insurance (illegally), and since OP said his plan did not include uninsured motorist coverage.
Since he was tallying up the modifications and value of his bike, I'm assuming he hopes to get some sort of payment from the comprehensive/collision portions of his own plan. Not sure how that works, as I've never had to make a claim through my own insurance.

I did that (In Australia) after I was hit by an uninsured driver, she only had the state required third party medical cover.
Got ruling in my favour, then she filed bankruptcy and I got the eat the cost of my bike, brand new Shoei helmet (I got it the morning of the crash), and assorted gear. Plus the costs involved in getting everything through to the courts, all the filing and service fees.
So court doesn't always work.
[deleted] 2 points · Jan 2014
Not sure about Australia but bankruptcy will not protect you from a court judgment here.
malistryx 2 points · Jan 2014 · GSX-R 600, Ducati 848
Here it really depends on the assets they have, they won't take your house or only vehicle in the case of bankruptcy and certain incomes are protected. That's why I got screwed, woman didn't have anything the court could touch.

Folks are allowed to drive without at least third party insurance in the US?
[deleted] 6 points · Jan 2014
Actually there is one state that doesn't require vehicle insurance... New Hampshire.
And there are a few states which allow you to put up a bond instead of an insurance plan.
Wanderlust-King 1 points · Jan 2014 · XV250, Katana600, Ninja750, Duke390, CTX700n
And several states that allow motorcycles, atvs and other small vehicles on the road, uninsured.

In the UK, there's a minimum fine of £300 (us$500) six points on your licence (12 Disqualifies you from driving, any points increases your insurance). If it goes to court, you can be fined up to £3000 and can be banned from driving.
Whatever happens (fine or court), the car is seized there and then, and can only be retrieved when a driver insured to use that car shows up to collect it and pay the tow/storage costs.
Oh, and our insurance companies have a fund for covering clients against un-insured drivers so long as they have comprehensive insurance.
neva5eez 1 points · Jan 2014 · 2k3 SV1000s, 2012 CBR250R, 2014 Daytona 675R
In Ontario Canada, they impound your vehicle, and you won't be getting it back until you pay the min $10,000 fine.. plus some other fines attached to it.
golapader 2 points · Jan 2014 · Houston, TX - 2010 Ninja 650r
Do you live in Houston by any chance? I remember reading something a month ago that we're about the only people who call them feeder roads. I've had an experience with an unisured motorist too and I feel you pain bro :/
obious [OP] 3 points · Jan 2014 · S1000RR | R1
It was outside Portland OR. I always thought any small road connecting to a major one is a feeder road.
deviantpdx 3 points · Jan 2014
Dude, if you have Oregon insurance you should have underinsured motorist coverage. It is mandated by the state as part of the minimum vehicle insurance requirements. Call your insurance company and if they say you do not have it push them HARD. They should not have sold you insurance without it.
obious [OP] 2 points · Jan 2014 · S1000RR | R1
Thanks, I'll look into this.
Edit: Followed up on this, and you're partially right. I have the mandatory uninsured coverage, but that does not cover property damage. The hospital visit minus the deductible is covered but that's it. As I said above, it's uninsured medical and property are separate and only medical is mandatory.
deviantpdx 2 points · Jan 2014
Sucky man. My state mandates underinsured motorist coverage.
ragtop1989 2 points · Jan 2014
This makes me rage so fucking bad. I hate irresponsible drivers who can just defer the problem they caused to you, all because they don't have insurance. You should be able to repo anything she fucking owns, her wages, belongings, maybe the box this bitch lives in. People fucking suck. Sorry about your troubles dudes.
schlossenberger 2 points · Jan 2014 · 2019 MT-07 Central PA
This reminds me of when this young girl made a left turn in front of me at a traffic light, didn't have time to stop, and I slid on the wet roads and hit her. This was in my car though, but irrelevant to my story.
She didn't have insurance, I did. Which was interesting because in Pennsylvania, you provide proof of insurance when registering your vehicle, and in ANY traffic stop. But nevertheless, she was uninsured and caused an accident. My insurance company paid to fix my car still, and I imagine they chased her down in court or whatever to get their money back. Surprised your insurance company isn't doing this, but I guess the coverage is different.
This definitely sucks, damn, hope you get something from it. I just renewed my bike policy Monday night. Was definitely unsure about the UM and UIM coverage - will have to look back and check!
