Time to be a brave boy Renly

And it's finally time for "burst element"

Ksaraf23

More like Renly Synthesis GOOD BOI!!!

Berion-Reviador

I don't know why but this half of Alicization looks much better than the first one. I even have a feeling that they saved budget from the first part to make the war more amazing. Animation, details/shadows, shots composition... Everything looks greater. I just hope that they will keep this quality until the very last episode, it doesn't matter for me how much the gap between 12 and 13th episodes will be. 17th and 18th volumes are so epic that I can't wait to see them adapted.

As for the episode, Renly's part is seemed to be adaptated pretty good. One of the my favourite parts in the books - Bercouli's art - was good too, but I wish A-1 had more time to show his preparations. And Alice... Well, Alice is as hot as usual ;) Good thing is that they included her thoughts. Best waifu of all times.

jferdog

I mean there's definitely more budget going to this season than the last one. It has to be that way though. The scale is just massive in comparison and that shit isn't changing anytime soon.

I really enjoyed this week's episode, but I noticed some of the minor changes which kind of bugged me a little. But nonetheless, I still really enjoyed it all thoroughly! I love Renri's voice actor, and I'm proud of him for making a move. All of the scenes today were beautifully animated. The highlights of today's episode for me was definitely through Renri, because I love his character. When they showed him in deep freeze/cryostasis earlier I kind of find the scene to be pretty sad and I love the parallel's between that scene on him hiding in his tent. I'm proud of him for fighting back.

I'm ready to see Bercouli in action... and Alice, earlier, holy fucking shit. Rip dark witches. D's expression is priceless! I really love the internal dialogue they're giving her there, and her abilities are the reason why she is befitting of the Radiant Medium title. I love you, Alice.

Though... I thought this episode would also focus on Eldrie as well... I guess his death is drawing near, sadly. Judging by the episode's pacing I think I'm placing my bets that Asuna's coming on episode 10, or maybe even 11, and they'll stop on the climax for volume 16/beginning of volume 17 when even the reinforcements from the other side aren't enough.

And can I just say how amazing the WoU's adaption has been so far? Aside from the few errors here and there I'm really happy with the direction they're going - I hope this quality continues till the second part.

Nonetheless, I'm super hyped for the next episode and I'm not ready to see Eldrie go.

ALICE USES SOLAR BEAM! IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

...oh yeah, and Renly found his spine, that too, but I honestly forgot of it very fast once the second half began XD (That said, they changed quite a few bits of how that scene went, right? I'm pretty sure I remember the murder lolis actually showing up BEFORE Renly actually got the courage to act, back at the tents, and actually talking a bit with him, the Kouhais and looking at Kirito...). Also, did anyone think that, unlike the previous episode with Deusolbert and Fanatio, the moment when the Twin-Edged Wings and the Time-Piercing Sword showed their true power was cooler on the novels? I imagined them a bit fancier than this, that's for sure...

Alice using her sword's released form to basically create a giant 'flower cannon' for her art was beautifully animated, though. And the scene felt amazingly powerful, that's for sure...all those lives, taken in an instant, for the one she wants to protect...truly, her burden is a heavy one.

SaintNeos

YES! That's why I thought the scene looked much less 'amazing' and more 'flashy but empty' than anything! They removed the whole weight and tension it originally had in the novels!

Harrafish15

Completely agree. I think they should have hyped up the minions. It kind of felt like they were cutting a lot of hype from the LNs short. :\

00zau

They do show the 'grid of slashes' before he uses it, though.

I think overall all of the Integrity Knights "moments" in this battle felt a little rushed.

The time that the LN takes to give context is what gives the scenes their weight. That's pretty much always how things go in writing; you stop to give more detail and build suspense to lend weight to an action that might take seconds. The literary equivalent of slo-mo.

The issue becomes translating that to screen. Things probably wouldn't work out with just jamming in narration, but Renly's flashbacks did an okay job. I think they should have dwelt on things a little more. The ogre chief should have had a bit of a flashback to explain why he went glitch mode, for example. And like you mentioned, they cut out the explanation of what Bercouli did.

Overall the last two episodes feel like they should have been three. What's there looks stunning, but it feels like each sequence needed a little more time to set up their respective climaxes.

seitaer13

Yeah it's them showing him bravery that allows him to act. They already changed how Lizel and Finel acted last episode, having them go off on their own instead of being given leave to do so.

SaintNeos

Oh, thanks for the reminder seitaer, I HADN'T caught on that small detail until now 'cause my memory of the smallest details of the war is a bit fuzzy (Been long since I re-read these vols 'cause...I didn't want to relieve the suffering XP). But yeah, changing things like that actually hurts the characters' development a bit...

Also, I just realized that Renly has the same voice that the main character from Kobayashi-san's Dragon maid, OMG XD

seitaer13

I can understand. I read 16 and 17 recently since I hadn't read the actual LN versions of events since reading web novel summaries years ago. Volume 17 in particular is just non stop anxiety.

SaintNeos

Yes, I thought vol14 had hurt me more than anything, but vol17 just made me want to strangle Reki many times (Especially because of poor Sugu...) while also screaming more than a few...

seitaer13

Asuna's desperation at being unable to stop the Underworld citizens from dying is what got me.

frs-1122

Not to mention that not even the reinforcements are enough to stop them from decimating the Human Army's soldiers...

frs-1122

VOLUME 17 IS JUST NOTHING BUT PURE ANGST AND SADNESS AND ANGER. I can't bring myself to read it again... I hate you, virtual World War III.

Rhyto

Good Lord remembering these moments hurts me, but shoot gotta get my dose of feels right?!

[deleted]

Something else I noticed that was changed was how they didn't explain the goblin chief knew where Renly's daggers were coming from because of the sound. I think they changed how Renly defeated him too. Iirc his daggers stopped right before the goblin chief would've blocked it and then continued moving right when the chief's sword was out of the way. In the anime though they just made it fly around and slice him in half. Both the Twin-Edged Wings and the Time-Piercing Sword could've been done much better, but they wanted to get both those over with in a single episode sadly.

SaintNeos

Yeah, 100% agree with that, it was sad to see how those two cool moments got shafted...

Don7Quijote

Another great episodes, tbh so far this is the best SAO season, except for Aincrad

Poor Alice, the burden of killing so many thousands with your portable death star. I loved her monologue about how the souls of both the humans and demi-humans are the same and the only difference is which side of the mountains they were born.

Renly's back story scene was good both of him being a failure as an IK but also how he accidentally killed his best friend. Though when you realize your Release Recollection is a fidget spinner.

My only complain is that they did not explain how Bercoulli was "holding" on the slashes in the air after placing them before the battle.

plsdonthurtmi

I absolutely love this episode holy shit. I forgot all about Renri apart from the fact that he ran away so seeing his fight and development was so amazing.

The 5 second scene he had fighting the goblin group was so fluid. At one point he actually kicks one of the Twin Edged Wings to return fire to the goblins. So cool. Renri 10/10 smoothest fighter.

Bercouli's Armament Full Control Art is badass.

I didn't visualize Alice's 'Burst Element' scene from the novels that much, so seeing the way they animated it is pretty spine-chilling.

stormyx22

so the next episode is "Blood and Life"... makes me think Eldrie is going to leave us for good. big sacrifice in exchange for one integrity knight. maybe they start moving to the dark territory as well?

couldn't picture Alice's big laser attack while reading, and seeing it animated was beautiful! all those dead fluctlights man...

Excellent week. Alice tops the anime trending chart for best girl of the week Fall 2019. My review for WOU has become the top one on MAL and people have been friend requesting all week/adding me to SAO fan pages. A lot of the downright senseless hate against SAO is being called out and challenged online and I appreciate that. It’s ok if you don’t like the series, everything’s not for everyone, however if you’re 4 seasons into it at this point and still complaining with the same tired ass talking points, that’s on you. Just don’t watch it. There’s no need to drag yourself through something you don’t enjoy just to seem cool by shitting on it online.

Anyway. Amazing episode as usual, animation and art have been absolutely world class from A-1 this season, my God. The colour palette is just brilliant and really brings everything ABEC drew to life. Loved the fights this episode. Renly's growth was awesome and felt very natural, his self confidence was completely shot and he reacted in a way I think most people would being put in that situation. I actually enjoyed seeing it in the episode a lot more than reading it. Always being labeled a failure would break anyone.

Finding courage in spite of that is amazing, good job Renli. The disappointment on DIL's face was priceless, and to top it off, best girl wipes an entire battalion out in a single strike. Loved her facial expression through it all. Definitely just as good as I imagined while reading. Can't wait for the next ep Thanksgiving weekend! Also, volume 23 is now available for pre order on Amazon!

Alice is Godtier waifu: https://imgur.com/a/c5u311B

Euryy

Damn, Renri's twin-edged wings do its job. Plus it's release Recollection is nice! Definitely not expecting the design of TEW from what I imagined while reading the LN. but still.

Also, Alice clap clap 1 vs many for her. Nothing to say more about her scene.

10/10 for ep 7 🎊

enzer_pyro

Long have I waited, Brave Bird activated.

I couldn't stop smiling. The war continues to surpass my expectations (and far better at that), I don't really see myself as someone that only gains satisfaction from action but I have without a doubt been enjoying Alicization as it is right now, A1 seem to be at their peak.

Glad to have seen Renri's backstory animated, in a sense you could say that he had his own "Kirito" and that he was the "Eugeo" of the pair. Even though it was mostly a far shot, I enjoyed his whole action scene, it was beautiful, even more so with the stunning Release Recollection of the «Double Wings». I'm glad to once again see him get the respect he deserves. Thanks, Kirito. Can't wait to listen to his theme in full.

A lot different than I thought but Ojii-san's a badass as always, just a little longer now though. 'twas nice to see DIL's plans explode in her face.

As for Alice... Millennium Twilight really did have the right idea about this super nuke. In face of massive destruction and the thousands of lives now lost, it was indeed a spectacular sight. THis is the power of the «Radiant Medium».

Again, A1 have really outdone themselves.

Couldn't stop smiling, my excitement was off the charts. Next: Blood and Life.

I_Love_Alice

This cour's SAO episodes have really been 10/10, adaptation-wise. Every last scene, along with the re-ordering of events, has been masterfully executed.

The action scenes and animation sequences are also quite the step up from the previous half; big props to Ono and A-1 for handling this arc so well.

When I originally read WoU a few years ago, Renri's fight from today's episode is one of the few things that I distinctly remembered until today. The "boomerang" combat was super cool in the books, and the new episode made that scene so much cooler than I remembered. Here's hoping A-1 keeps this quality going throughout the rest of WoU's adaptation.

Jnk1296

I'm not one for big reviews. I simply came here to say this:

THAT LAZER!!! 0.0

AsunasPersonalAsst

Renri like a fruit ninja..

Trickot851

It was nice to see the episode actually starting with Linel and Fizel doing what they do best, they seriously deserved some screentime (those CGI goblins though lol).

While I actually liked Renly's scene I think it was cut short a little too much, it didn't look like it conveyed why Renly was all of a sudden able to pull off the Release Recollection of his weapon, though hinting to it's origin was a nice touch. Also, props to the voice actor, that was an engaging performance. On the other hand, I feel like Bercouli's part was down-hyped, there wasn't any tension and the minions were just introduced as soon as they were about to be destroyed.

But let's not forget the best scene of the whole episode IMO: Alice and her bombastic scene. I really liked that the anime actually respected part of her inner monologue and included it, I think that the resemblance between humans and the creatures of the Dark Territory hasn't been emphasized as much (if at all) in the anime compared to the LN. Overall, I think it was a somewhat unbalanced episode compared to the previous one but it did a really good job on ending with a high note.

matty-a

Best boy Renri is here! I really love his character because he isn't the badass fighter like we've seen countless times in the series but, like Eugeo, is just an ordinary person thrown into extraordinary circumstances. The real battle he has is with himself and that's really cool. Though, tbf, not as cool as Alice's burst element that was pure fire!

Blessings_Of_Babylon

Alice is a firin' her lazor.

fek that meme is like 15 years old

Ill mention it one last time and then not mention it again until its relavent, but i am still very glad that the CGI fighting is kept to a minimum. It is present, and it does look terrible when it is there, but its not there often and thats good in my book.

Outside that continuous gripe, ive not got much to say about an episode everyone else is already talking about. I particularly enjoyed the Murder-Loli's murdering their way to victory.

One memorable tidbit im happy got adapted was how Renli's fingers start getting cut up by his own weapon. I dont particularly recall why that image was memorable to me, but I was happy to see that it remained. Not that I was expecting it to be cut, or anything, just happy to see it there.

also, Renli reminds me of a Dancer in ff14 and i just finished dancer... dancer AoE OP. Those Gobbos never saw it coming.

frs-1122

OOH, REALLY? That's a really neat detail! Can you tell me which timestamp did it happen? When I went to rewatch this episode I noticed Tiese's hands were shaking in the scene after Renri can out from hiding.

And yeah! Renri's fight looks like he's dancing, it's really adorable to look at.

Blessings_Of_Babylon

Renri fails to catch the Blades perfectly at about 11:00 - after Big Gobbo Boi appears. Always thought that was a nice touch in the books.

Have some FF14 dancer, too.

ft86psvr

I play a dancer and that was my immediate thought haha

Blessings_Of_Babylon

Tbf i think about FF14 constanty to the annoyance of several other people on here.

But even if i didn't, id bet id still draw the comparison because im annoying like that.

Antitheistic10

Maybe I missed it in the LN’s but why can Renly remember the tournament? Shouldn’t his memories be blocked?

seitaer13

The entire war of the underworld section of the novels is told in 3rd person omniscient.

Renly can't remember.

Antitheistic10

That’s what I thought. The episode just kind of made it seem like he remembered it and almost like he used it as motivation.

seitaer13

His motivation should be seeing the murder twins bravery, but everything got moved around. As usual for no real reason.

I_Love_Alice

I mean, instead his motivation was Kirito's bravery, which I like much more. The anime has done a great job of showing Kirito's massive will despite his current inability to act, which only will make Volume 18's content more meaningful in the anime.

I have absolutely no qualms with the rearranging of events that have been done this season, and I feel that they've only improved the flow of the story in comparison to the constant scene-jumping that is present in Volume 16.

seitaer13

Even if you completely sacrifice the development of established characters?

I_Love_Alice

Rearranging of events has completely sacrificed the development of established characters

Please elaborate on this, as I don't feel that anything major pertaining to established characters has been left out.

Antitheistic10

That makes sense. Something seemed wrong

Rhyto

Definitely enjoyable, really looking forward to the coming episodes because from what I remember we're just going to have side story after side story building up the characters throughout the war. My concern is how much CGI they're going to use for the climatic battles....when like....erm

I don't want to directly mention despite this being a LN section but let's just say the invasion from external forces has me concerned.
