State House passes anti-trans school bathroom bill; Senate has no plans to do same

Republicans in the State House following the national anti-trans push even though it's D.O.A.

How's that annual state budget coming along?

but no school budget despite the months old deadline, got it!!

RECALL MATT HALL.

[deleted]

I had the misfortune of catching part of his interview on WDET the other day, not knowing who it was. But as soon as I heard "waste, fraud, and abuse" and "Democrat Party," I knew it was just another Republican asshole spewing their usual nonsense.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Very on-brand for our Michigan GOP pols. A history of depraved behavior is practically a prerequisite for their viability as a candidate.

[deleted]

It amazes me what GOP voters can excuse.

PancakesKitten

They don't pay attention so they don't have to excuse anything . They just believe what they're told.

Poster_of_a_Girl

Folks, please give it up for Rep. Matt Hall! 👏👏👏

Randolph_Carter_6

I like how that rolls off the tongue.

Warcraft_Fan

Less than one month remains. The evil moon from Majora Mask is staring down over Lansing.

--slurpy--

Really getting tired of them saying it's the senate that's holding things up. Like they honestly think democrats should cede to their Bullshit so our democratic governor will what? Also play along with their partisan games?

Sw2029

Their playbooks is to hammer the public and the left with so much shit we just give up out of exhaustion. They have to try to move the midline as far as possible before the midterms so the 'new normal' can be closer to their fascist horseshit

Setsuna00XN

Except that we all know(or should know) that Big Gretch don't play that. Everything she's done has been for the state. It's the Repubs(specifically the traitorous MAGAt Repubs) and the centrist Dems that are doing this.

[deleted]

However, she recently said only she and Hall have the “guts” to get this done. As someone who lives in Brinks’s district and think she’s a steady and strong leader, this is upsetting. I hope Whitmer is playing 3D chess here but i have serious doubts

feistyfox100

They had time for this, but not to pass the school lunch funding. These people are actual clowns.

Coteup

It's a complete and total joke that this state doesn't have paid family leave, especially after 2 years of a Dem trifecta. Completely useless politicians. Joe Tate and Matt Hall should be publicly shamed

Smooth-Bandicoot6021

Clowns make people smile and laugh. These people are actual monsters. Soulless, cruel, repugnant monsters.

No-Imagination8755

What clowns!?! Everyone knows dictating where a couple of trans kids go to shit is way more important than children getting a meal at school! Like be serious, where would you rather have your tax dollars go to? Feeding children (gross, ew) or making a trans kid feel bad about themselves (awesome sigma mindset). /s

Charming_Minimum_477

Question but my conservative Michiganders, why are y’all so infatuated with penises?

Longjumping_Cherry32

Truly cannot stop picturing what’s in other peoples’ underwear, but it’s “wholesome family values,” promise

[deleted]

Do your job and pass the funding that came from our paychecks for our schools and roads!

[deleted]
ExactPanda

This is why we can't ever let Republicans have control of any branch of government ever again. They are weird, unserious people.

BluesSuedeClues

I don't think of them as "weird" or "unserious" so much as just cruel. They're always targeting the most marginalized people in our society.

[deleted]

[deleted]

ich_bin_alkoholiker

All of the above.

Jonny-mtown77

This is so true OP..

It's all the above..

WitchesSphincter

They're not always cruel. They will go out of their way to help those who already have the means to help themselves

tbombs23

True. Corporate welfare and tax cuts for the 1%

enwongeegeefor

I don't think of them as "weird" or "unserious" so much as just cruel

The word you are looking for is EVIL.

firemage22

no they are very weird, and the shithead consultants who told Harris/Walz to stop using that line need to be barred from the field

BenWallace04

Well they’re still weird

kaloschroma

Yeah. The original Republican party, although I still did not agree with most their views were fairly level headed and well educated. Republicans today are bat shit insane.

Democrats these days are the Republicans of yesterday. Dems now often hold opinions that have conservative values. Although I don't agree with many of them most their views (etc etc).

: (

[deleted]

They're cruel and incompetent and it says a lot about the stupidity of the average person that they ever managed to come to power anywhere

mapesely

Why don’t you pass a fucking budget instead on this culture war bullshit.

Msfcarp1

They think this shit is going to win them the next election. Despicable assholes.

cmil888

This is what my taxes are paying for? How about we pass the lunch funding!

HobbesMich

Or a real budget!

cmil888

This.

Pls_no_steal

Its awesome that a week after an actual school shooting this is what they think the biggest problem in schools is

Isord

Why are Republicans so interested in the genitalia of children?

CreepyFun9860

They have sexual preference. Some prefer little boys. Some prefer little girls.

TheBimpo

They’re interested in exterminating transsexuals but not in preventing child sexual abuse. Everything they say is a projection, obstruction, or lie.

BGAL7090

Because if children actually learned how to advocate for themselves and their bodily autonomy, they wouldn't be as pliable to groom for their private islands and "parties." Above all else, the biggest "cultural division" between queer folks and conservatives is that queer folks aren't afraid of their deep-rooted sexual preferences. Religion is a shield that absolves one of self-reflection, because it's just "the devil's influence" and you're much better off having "a moment of weakness" as opposed to accepting who you really are.

HobbesMich

Or childhood diseases that are easily preventable.

mdsddits

Exactly. What does it matter to you (them)?

Answer #1: it doesn’t.

Answer #2: it doesn’t but let’s distract the voters from what actually matters with some partisan cultural war talking point which affects a tiny tiny portion of the community.

Final answer: #2!!!

catslikepets143

G(uardians) O(f) P(edophiles)

totally-hoomon

Because they are all pedophiles

BluesSuedeClues

One of those questions that answers itself.

MaximumJim_

The MiGOP is obsessed with genitalia.

PandaJesus

Statistically the safest way to protect children in bathrooms is to ban Republican politicians from them.

WitchesSphincter

The safest is to band them from religious activities.  Outside of family, that's the biggest group of child rapist.  Then it's a steep fall to other predators.

Arkvoodle42

for the last thirty years Republicans have done more to stop children from using the bathroom at school than from getting shot at school.

articulatedbeaver

Can't even let a kid shit in peace anymore. Is this what we pay them for?

Six_Foot_Se7en

They don’t give a damn about kids getting breakfast/lunch during school, but what bathroom trans people use is a top priority.

First-Association367

They want to be the ones standing outside the bathroom checking all the kids genitalia to make sure it's matches

MC_PooPaws

As a lunch theydy (no, I don't ask the kids to call me that, I don't even ask my coworkers to call me that), I just want them to fund school lunches. Feeding kids should be the easiest yes vote anyone has ever given.

DiTochat

I really don't understand the argument around this. We are all using a bathroom at home with people of the other gender.

mk4_wagon

Not me, I specifically bought a house with 3 bathrooms and some nice trees outside if you prefer that route.

/s

em_washington

And in elementary schools that often have a bathroom in the classroom - it is one toiled room shared by everyone in the classroom. But when you see a story about a middle school making all of it's bathrooms gender neutral, people freak out.

newshirtworthy

Good for nobody. Go us

severedbrain

How about go fuck yourself. Trans rights are human rights.

network_dude

y'know what would stop this dead in its tracks?

No gendered bathrooms. Like so many other places in the world.

Why would anyone want to check another person's genitals?

It's such a grievous overstep into someone else's privacy.

CT-555-

Ah yes republicans priorities, focusing on kids in bathrooms instead of budgets for their classroom. What a dumpster fire of party. Republican Party of pedos

ChaosCorpDM

Trans woman here. I'd really like it if my internalized transphobia wasn't enforced by law. That is all.

syynapt1k

And republican voters clap like mindless seals completely ignorant of the fact that their pockets are being picked

Jasonxhx

These people think about children's genitals all fucking day

Bradybigboss

America really just needs to get floor to ceiling bathroom stalls like the rest of the world instead of the crazy junk we have. Makes the whole bathroom situation a lot easier

Mental-Database-3383

No budget and we’re on the brink of a government shutdown. But yes let’s focus on children’s genitalia. The MI House and Matt Hall are such a fucking joke

gremlin-mode

Rep. Brad Paquette (R-Niles). "Males designated by sex on birth certificates should be confined to spaces of their sex

I've got bad news for this guy about what my birth certificate says lol

lPHOENIXZEROl

Like .0004% of the school age population, fascists doing what fascists do.

Happy-Bit-9059

The senate should pass an anti-gop bathroom bill. Those pedos shouldnt be trusted around anybody.

littlelupie

My former Michigan high school has had protections for using bathrooms that corresponds to your gender identity for like 10+ years. Afaik, not one singular issue despite 6000+ kids attending.

But God forbid we let kids fucking eat free. Gotta focus on the important shit.

Love my state. Hate these people's bullshit. I used to work for the state senate 15ish years ago and somehow the Republicans have just managed to get WORSE.

Panem-et-circenses25

Human garbage

totally-hoomon

Remember all Republicans say child rapists should be in school bathrooms

seasuighim

Universities should already have gender neutral bathrooms.

VeryTallAndWealthy

At least add a bunch of unisex bathrooms

Maggiemygirl

How dumb. 🙄

f0rcedinducti0n

Would love it if our state legislators would stop wasting time and money pushing divisive legislation they know won't pass just for the optics.

[deleted]

Oh good what really matters. Dictating where a couple hundred people in the state are allowed to shit

personalleytea

So this is what they want to do instead of work.

VoidJuiceConcentrate

I'm sorry, instead of preparing for the impending war with the federal government (literally, or figuratively), they're choosing to do this?

shitpissfunkwanker

they’d rather make me use a different bathroom than tell us the budget for the school year LOL. thankfully it’s vvvvery unlikely to pass the senate like it said already but it’s so so stupid

UPdrafter906

What an embarrassment

SpecialTable9722

Unenforceable without the enforcers becoming sex predators. Which, if we’re honest, the people worrying about the genitals of other people in the restroom already are.

tom-of-the-nora

The words I have for the bigots attacking trans people would get me banned if I actually said them.

So, I'll say this (long rant, adhd brain late at night) instead.

They're wasting time attacking the citizens of their own state.

https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/no-link-between-trans-inclusive-policies-bathroom-safety-study-finds-n911106

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8849575/#:~:text=The%2012%2Dmonth%20prevalence%20of%20sexual%20assault%20was%2026.5%25%20among,INTRODUCTION

Said bans make the lives of the trans people more dangerous. Doing this vice signaling is just a beacon to say that "trans people aren't wanted."

It's bullying on a government level. The government bullying citizens they deem unworthy of respect.

It's pathetic, it's a waste of time, it's a waste of resources, and it helps no one.

We need to have more people be vocal supporters of trans rights. Someone wants to bring up trans people to say they're a threat, boo them. You don't have to understand trans people. Just know that the evidence and research supports trans people, and the government shouldn't be dictating where someone goes to the bathroom or what sports they should or shouldn't be allowed to play, and the government definitely shouldn't be saying what healthcare someone doesn't receive.

Hrt for trans people is more than gender affirming care. It's healthcare.

These are decisions that shouldn't involve the government. Healthcare, bathroom use, and sports are personal things that should be the decision of the person, and sports participation requirements should be up to the leagues to decide, not the state.

sammytwelve

Disgusting. I'm sick of the hate man. Why can't we let people live?

tinyE1138

I want off this planet.

kaloschroma

Same... But I can't ascend yet (or join the singularity). So I'll just do art and fight.

justhereforsee

Look over here while we screw you over there.

[deleted]

I'm afraid this shit's gonna creep over to the Dem party eventually with how some Dems have been saying they agree with Republicans on keeping trans girls out of school sports (they don't know trans boys exist). What scares me more is people saying us worrying about it "purity testing". I miss when only Republicans hated people like me.

Vx0w

Which Dems? Names for public shaming

[deleted]

Gavin Newsom, being the recent big one, who talked about it with his first podcast guest CHARLIE KIRK (WTF?). Two others were from Texas. Vincente Gonzales and Henry Cuellar. And if you know anything about Cuellar, he's anti-abortion, and Nancy Pelosi backed him over the progressive, pro-abortion candidate in the primaries (I guess, to be fair, Pelosi did say in 2017 that abortion was a fading issue within the Dem party and that they plan to be more inclusive and welcome anti-abortion Dems into the party).

Cuellar is one of the Dems who jumped on Trump's nuts the moment he took office this year. I can't remember the other person I was thinking of, but it was a man and I believed they showed his anti-trans campaign ad on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver earlier this year.

I get that people might think banning trans kids from school sports might not be a huge issue, but what next? Ban them from school completely? I criticized Newsom's position on this and I was called a "purity tester" by several. People should realize that criticizing politicians and making them take a more progressive stance is a good thing. You should want them to succeed and do the right thing. Trans rights are non-negotiable. No one defended my rights growing up and I want to supports the rights of future generations. Trans rights for all. Not for some.

If this was passed, how would it be enforced and what would be the penalty?

And addressing Representative Fox's comment about biological men showing in women's showers - can that actually happen right now without this law? Like could a person with a penis shower openly in a women's locker room if they identify as a woman?

RMMacFru

So another excuse for Republican child molesters to look at kids privates?

Fuck you Republicans, eat shit
