/r/PixelArt Game Collaboration | PART 1 - BRAINSTORM

PART 2 IS NOW UP:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PixelArt/comments/qlycea/rpixelart_game_collaboration_part_2_choosing_an/

__________________________________________

Hello /r/PixelArt! We were recently contacted by Reddit who wish to fund community collaborations for subreddits, and selected /r/pixelart as one of the first!

After some discussion with reddit representative /u/velikore, we've settled on the idea of a collaborative game which we will develop, with art submitted by the /r/pixelart community. We hope to use our funds to hire a developer or two to complete the game's coding, and tie in art assets submitted by /r/pixelart members (though we will also open source it for others to contribute). If possibly we will also give away some prizes for the best contributions!

In this thread we'd like to host some brainstorming about what kind of game you'd like to see most!

_________________________________________________

I've written out a few ideas below, feel free to expand upon them in the comments, or give us your own idea for a good collaborative game! \*

RPG Adventure

Walk around exploring an interconnected series of maps, perhaps collecting things discovering places. Artists could submit new maps to explore, collectable items (possibly characters).

Tactical Character Arena

Select a team of heroes and battle others in a grid/turn based arena (like a customizable chess). Artists could submit character sprites/portraits, and choose how their character moves and attacks (and possibly backgrounds, items)

Friendsim

Wander around and have conversations with npcs as you try to make friends, and avoid making enemies (similar to a dating sim). Artists could submit character portraits (and dialogue), and backgrounds. (possibly overworld sprites and maps).

Battle RPG

A typical retro turn based battling rpg (final fantasy, pokemon, etc). Artists could submit monster sprites, overworld tiles, and overworld maps (possibly characters).

Collectible Card Game

Collect cards and either use battle or trade with NPCs to earn more. Artist submit card art and details. (possibly develop a simple ruleset for a game to play)

Side Scrolling Shooter

Endless arcade shooter where you shoot enemies and avoid obstacles. Artists could submit backgrounds, enemies, projectiles, obstacles. Could also be controlled by a platforming character

Shopkeeper

NPCs come into your shop to buy or sell items where you barter over the price, trying to make a profit. Artists could submit character portraits and item sprites.

* keep in mind, game ideas must:

  • show off pixel art as much as possible
  • be easy for lots of different artists to submit art
    • just a few type of assets / not too complicated
    • allows artists to be creative in their submissions
    • infinitely expandable
  • require minimal development
    • simple, 2D, web-based, single player
    • not require anything per art submission (artists cant create a new enemy that would need custom coding)

_________________________________________________

So let's hear your ideas, and make an awesome game together!!

I’d like to say a big thank you to the r/pixelart and entire community for taking part! This has been one of my favourite subs for a long time and I’m so excited I get to support you all on such a cool project.

I can’t wait to see what you talented folk come up with!

Hyperion_Industries

I personally would enjoy seeing and perhaps purchasing a classic turn-based RPG with companions/followers and pure you-go-I-go combat like in Earthbound or Pokemon. There’s not all that many of that kind of game coming out now, and there’s still lots of things that can be done with it.

I’m going to put my other thoughts in replies to myself so the topics can be separated.

Edit: This means I vote for “Battle RPG” just so that’s clear.

Hyperion_Industries

As for the theming, I think a blend of everything would work well. There’s artists for all sorts, and giving everyone an area to work on would be wonderful. The game could start with a mountainous village that has a medieval aesthetic, to give the artists who specialize in natural landscapes and nice bespoke houses time to shine, as well as serving as a classic point of entry to any game. Then the areas could increase in technological level as the game progresses. It could include Victorian aesthetics in one zone, perhaps with steampunk sub-theming. Then another zone could be gothic architecture and diesel a la Warhammer. Then later on the style could shift towards sci-fi so the space artists can flex their muscles.

I am not a writer, but I think there’s a way to blend all of this together in a way that most would find enjoyable.

velikore

+1

I love your idea of having a journey through all these different times and environments.

Hyperion_Industries

Gee whizz my first platinum! Thank you very much kind redditor. :3

Edit: Reddit’s mobile UI is wacky and didn’t let me know that you’re the admin, sorry.

Vigitiser

I’m not a writer, but I pride myself on my creativity.

What about instead of gyms, we have portal and portal guardians? You defeat them. You gain a crystal that you can use to travel to the new world, whether it’s a dimension, country or anything

Maybe the story is that all the worlds were merged long ago and all that’s where the monsters/mons came from

Hyperion_Industries

That’s a good one!

EerieAH

As a pixel artist I'd love to collaborate in a project like this, where I could truly go to the top of my style, instead of trying to blend it with the general art direction of the game.

I am not a fan of card-based games or Friendsims, for separate reasons, so I vote against them.

Against card games, I prefer for anything with tactical elements to be mostly skill-based. Cards tend to limit your actions in each turn to almost pure randomness, which makes thinking ahead difficult since you’re relying on luck to fulfill your strategy. Also, I find it very difficult to understand the mechanics of deck building, and YuGiOh hurts my brain.

Against Friendsims, I have a personal bias sgainst that title specifically, and I do not tend to play games where the primary “gameplay” loop is reading what a character says to you. I understand that that kind of thing is popular, but it’s not for me. I’d rather do something.

skeddles [OP]

thanks for your input =]

A collectible card game would be the best one to collaborate with, an entry is simply a single-frame sprite, that of which would be the easiest.

Vulpixy

I feel like this would be the best option as well. Plus with card games, you expect the card art to have a range of styles that reflect each artist's unique talents.

JamesTDG

Exactly why I said it!

breakycho

Yeah i’ve been in the process of creating my own card game implementing NFTs. I’ve made a couple of cards, but of course when it comes to coding a game that you can use them in I realize I cant do this on my own lol.

JamesTDG

Step 1: Learn Python
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Proffit!

viturowski

That is a really good idea!! Anything that would encompass all the diversity of styles we've got in the community is the way to go imo... Making a base card template/border and then inserting the artist's sprite and name into it.

JamesTDG

Exactly! We see it a lot in Pokemon and MTG

CaptainBeams

Does anyone remember Kongai on Kongregate?

Something like that would work really well -- there could be individual characters, but most of the contributions could just be single frame cards, so that way peeps wouldn't have to contribute a lot per person, but also, could ?

HydroFrog64_2nd

I think a battle RPG also has the same idea though as you would just need submit a flat monster/enemy sprite

A parodius clone (horizontal scrolling space shooter) with random generated levels.

Advantages:

  • no need for storytelling, which would give "post production" a heap of work and a huge imprint on the project
  • no need for elaborate and complex animations - a shooting and bursting animation for small enemies and bosses moving by having separate parts that move around instead of frame animations
  • Parodius throws anything at you as enemies, penguins, teapots, you name it. You can pixel it, it can be an enemy
  • it hasn't been done in a while, the genre is underrepresented. There isn't currently a game of the genre trending, so not taking away the spotlight from anyone or the other way around
  • with the bulk of these games being popular in the 1990s, a combination with procedural maps has never been done at all, but if it works for Diablo, it should work with horizontal scrolling shooters
  • The Reddit mascot fits in perfectly with the theme and can go on the cover
skeddles [OP]

sounds like it could work

TopSloth

I like this idea as well

AsFunAsFun

YUP this is an awesome idea.

nyurakim

well, if that would be solely up to me I would went with some "friendsim", cause of my strong suit - portraits (lol), but if we talking about the most common and easy-to-submit game - the card game would be my choice, can be dnd related as well. some random rolls would never hurt anybody, and if anything - would add more replayable factor to it. some cards are for a story (to show where it's all going), some for action, some little portraits if we felling fancy about bringing the choice of characters to the player, hm. anyway, I'm in whatever it goes, it sounds fun c:

Potatoman671

Yeah, I think cards are probably the best choice as the art styles can be as different as we want kind of how Pokémon card art styles are very different, but in a Pokémon game, it has to be very standardized because it all appears together.

Pixelsummoner

Consider, a turn based, boss-gauntlet RPG. Something akin go Epic Battle Fantasy in gameplay, with a robust enough API of actions and modular programming, adding new "stage," as it were, can be done via a plaintext file just listing what abilities the added enemy has access to. The interface could be card-style in the vein of Hearthstone meaning art submissions as simple as new card art, but can also encompass small animations, background environment art, battle/skill effects, etc. Not to mention that the card-style format is both a regular known boundary of what can fit, while still operating as pretty much free space that can be filled in mostly any artistic style.

The core units being represented in card format also make it extremely easy to integrate art credit within the game itself, instead of being restricted to only the list of contributors in the credits document - which no one will read. This has the benefit of making it so contributors can be instantly identified and associated with their specific art, something that might be difficult if the documentation falls into disrepair for any reason and might just be obscure for the average player.

_damax

This project seems very very fun. I'm not really a pixel art artist, bu rather enjoyer, and I'm really interested in the next steps that the subreddit will take towards this goal, especially for the coding/software development part of it, as it's my field.

You guys all rock hard, I love the art that everyone shares here.

Vigitiser

My vote is for battle RPG. I’d love to do some tile sets and maybe some monster sprites, even tho it isn’t my strong suit

The_Duck_In_A_Tux

I just wanna be a Npc lol that's all I need in life

MrSpaceOstrich

I feel like the card game could be really good, it would allow artists to get really creative and do what they want. I'm thinking like the card game "Muffin Time" Where all the cards do different things.

TheFeathersStorm

Rpg is probably the easiest to do as a collaboration, I'm thinking a TCG might be a little much since it automatically requires the extra work of number balancing and abilities, etc. But could be neat if pulled off correctly, so that's my second.

LorrMaster

What if there was a trading card game where trading literally was the game? So instead of having 10 minute matches based around poorly-balanced numbers, the goal would be to trade your way up to create a collection.

Trading could be done via a stock market style interface. Then various systems could be in place to add / remove cards from the economy to influence their value. Certain cards could have specific requirements to create them, such as only dropping on certain days of the year. You could craft 100 copies of a card together to create a "collector's" version. Other cards might have more concrete uses, such as being used for crafting or to affect drop rates.

So basically some sort of pixel-conomy game.

skeddles [OP]

That could be cool. I could see it like trading pokemon cards as a kid, where you look through each others collections and pick out ones you want, then decide trades for them.

You could sell them to different people (who might have a certain affinity for specific types of cards, so they'll pay more), then you can use the money to buy more packs.

This would mean people could also create characters in addition to cards.

TopSloth

Maybe a simple rouge-like with loot drops that are all the creations with random based loot drops

I will absolutely help with this project as well

I have a good bit of pixel art experience, don't mind my last two posts to this sub as I was just practicing animation not the art style but the rest of my work I submitted is how I am

TopSloth

Maybe a time warp bullet hell game? One time period medieval, one modern and one futuristic and that would cover mostly all peoples genre that they like to create. Basically start from medieval and work your way up to future

skeddles [OP]

could you explain or give examples of what you mean by time warp? or do you just mean for the changing settings?

TopSloth

Just for changing settings, the three (or more) settings could be on a level selection or overworld map

Katlima

Okay, I definitely have to team up with you and join forces. Your suggestion is not that different from the idea I had posted myself and I believe the differences could be solved with compromises. I'd be thrilled to get your feedback.

I also not only like to see the genre, I truely believe it's the most manageable option that requires the least additional effort on the non-pixelartist side, because a lot of the other game genres would require so much more additional work and effort when you see people asking for complex stories, character development or elaborate game mechanics like TCG balancing or a heap of necessary animations.

TopSloth

Let us join forces then and conquer this thread

The_Stalker_of_Night

Im a little late but what about a shopkeeper game? The base code shouldn't be too complicated and we could make the stuff that needs to be sold e.g armor, a magic staff, a taxidermied cow, with a lot of artistic freedom with what's being sold and how it looks.

Then we vote as a community or something for which ones should be the most expensive/rare/hard to get. It could be pretty funny to have the best item in the game be a dandelion valued at 10,000,000

skeddles [OP]

I'm a huge fan of reccettear, but I'd just worry about the coding getting too complex. I think it would have to be boiled down to just picking the items and bartering, and not include for example a shop where you place items and see customers walk around. Would be a good showcase of both character portraits and item sprites, both of which i think people would have a lot of fun making.

Nikurooi

Shopkeeper looks nice. Something like "Infinity SHOP "for all your needs""

PlagueDuck

Some kinda rpg where there’s tons of weapons, I just wanna make weapons

NormalTuesdayKnight

Was a decision made regarding the collective outcome here?

Also I’d be interested in helping out with audio. If there’s a need for foley or dialogue hmu. Unfortunately, music isn’t really in my wheelhouse.

skeddles [OP]

not yet. we will certainly accept audio submissions too! wouldn't want a silent game

Mairhiel

To take into account what was presented in the post I'd say an rpg with a character going through different dimension could be cool. Like a character going through different dream world and have to explore each dream to find a specific thing (object or person) to go to the other. Just throwing the idea I don't think I could participate, I barely begun my pixel art journey a few days ago and have a sparse coding knowledge.

Drekex

A kind of turn based rpg, but with the twist being each battle has a different style for the enemies and they get progressively more numerous and stronger until your team looses. It would grant pixel artists the freedom to draw in their style without clashing with each other

[deleted]

A side scroller about a town destroyed by a flood due to the ocean itself being pissed at humanity

Medical-Technology72

The card game idea would be really cool, card game ideas aren't as abundant as the rpg in my personal opinion

daverave1212

A pokemon like RPG with collectible monsters. Each artist makes a monster.

The gameplay could be similar to Hearthstone Mercenaries or Arcanium

Crotalina

I definitively want to help!! How can i do it?

[deleted]

Sounds neat, I'm not interested in working kn it but I kinda wanna see how it turns out.

HydroFrog64_2nd

Do you guys have an idea for what game engine you would be using for each game type? Like would you be using some game making tool kit like RPG Maker for an example or would it be something made from scratch essentially?

I think and RPG adventure or especially the Battle RPG could have the widest appeal to different artists' design specialties. What I mean is that people who like making weapons or armor could help work on items, people who like designing characters, monsters or animals could work on enemies (with just stat changes so it wouldn't be a burden on coders) and people who like designing worlds and such could design playable areas.

My vote personally is for the Battle RPG as again, it covers a lot of ground for what artists could make.

Edit: Also it's probably one of the easier of the ideas to implement and make feel like a nicely competent game with the least effort but I'm not a coder so I don't know.

A card game could also appeal to a lot of artist but it would probably be hard to settle on a core gameplay rules as I imagine everyone would have their own grandiose ideas of what the card game should play like.

Traffic-Complete

I'm so in

estamCZ
No_Square_3392

Since this is for Brainstorming i have an idea.

What about a game where the main character starts of small and weak. However, while fighting you punch of some pixels from the enemy and add them to you, slowly increasing your size and damage. When you get hurt its the other way around. I think this would also be easily expandable because once you've built a system that removes some Pixels from the enemy it basically doesn't matter what the enemies sprite is.

P.S. I think this would work beautifully with slimes. Not only because it makes sense for them to grow and shrink but also because almost every new pixelartist seems to draw a slime as one of their earliest works.

skeddles [OP]

sounds cool but doesn't have much focus on art submitted by redditors

SirYe

I feel like a card game would be easy as far as collaboration goes, just have an overall voted on card design and people can just draw whatever they want within the frames

skeddles [OP]

do you have any ideas for how the game would be played?

macklintietze

Hi I can provide free music I composed for the project !

Psiweapon

I'm late to the party but in case it still counts I vote for tactical rpg

kidbuuzero

i'd love to see some kind of tactical arena / rpg.

pick 3-4 characters at the start from a pool of ~20, in a classic fight game screen, and have a few rounds of combats against some bad guys

i would vote for a post-apocalyptic fantasy style. everyone loves some cool cyberpunk vibes with robots and lasers, but fantasy also allows for a mix of Mages, Warriors, and all the variety of creatures from the genres, so artists from different styles could submit characters and monsters ideas, from Street Samurai Gnomes to big shiny cats with guns

good luck with the proyect, it sounds beautiful :)

[deleted]

I really love this concept: it could be fun for exchanging advices and methods and for working on a bigger project

Anyway, I think that "RPG adventure" and "Battle RPG" are pretty good ideas because they are good opportunities for beginners for working on coding and assets more easily.

I have also other ideas to submit:

  1. per example, we can make a Yume Nikki-like game (we don't need to make battles and the main objective may be exploring different maps and finding effects; the core of this kind of game is the storytelling inside the maps, the events and the effects itself) -it can be a fun way to make a patchwork of everyone's artworks. Speaking of this idea, I remind of a Yume Nikki fangame named "Yume 2kki" (prononced "Yume NIkki") and it is a fan project of multiple artists
  2. for "Friendsim" idea, we can blend it with "Battle RPG" for making a sort of Battle RPG à la Undertale/Deltarune in which player must find the correct combinaison of actions for making friends/ennemies; the main problem stills the coding: it will be difficult to code a complex system like Undertale
Drawminite

Perhaps a visual, 2D choose your own adventure? We could limit the adventure in the beginning but this format allows for infinite expansion paths depending on how big this gets. Plus with this format we can incorporate a lot of niches and styles.

For example you decide to explore the woods and you find a UFO which zaps you into space so now all the artist who specialize in space/spacecraft related things can show off their niche. Or you could choose to hike and natural landscape artists can really shine here. Style formats also work here too.

So with the alien example you could do a top down style when exploring the woods. When you approach the UFO it can change to a brief animation in first person perspective of the glowing UFO with two text options of "leave" or "explore UFO". a side scrolling platform in the mothership fighting aliens as you try to find the main controls.

We can start with a few short story branches and as the community submits more we can create more branches.

I'm not too sure how coding would work with incorporating various 2d gaming formats so this could be too complex but I do think the general idea of a choose your own adventure in any format creates the most diversity for ideas and also allows this project to be added on infinitely.

ComputerFido

An adventure RPG would allow people to contribute art, etc. for separate worlds, characters, buildings etc. and could be a bit easier in terms of collaboration. It also could work with the turn based battle or the more indepth character interactions.

With the 'minimal development' are you thinking overall or just a very easy and intuitive way for non-programmers to contribute game content? I think it would be great to separate game content from code however I feel that it would be nice to have some level of flexibility in development. Web is a great idea as the game will be able to run on essentially any device without funky cross-platform nuances.

[deleted]
SnorkaSound

I prefer the tactical character arena, as I really like that style of game and I think that allows for a lot of cool characters and scenery. But second place is definitely the battle RPG, mainly for the same reasons as the former. Whatever is chosen, there should be lots of equipment and customization, since people here really like making art for weapons and such.

scottarc

I think a monster tamer battle rpg style game like pokemon could be a great way to get a lot of people involved? A game like that having a huge amount of varied creatures would be awesome I think. Plus theres loads of other places artists of a huge variation in skill level can get involved other than sprites, maps, backgrounds, down to smaller things like skill icons etc.

I think monster sanctuary is a great game in the genre to take inspiration from.

skeddles [OP]

that could work, though I worry about the amount of work it would take to define all the data for each monster, like moves, stats, weaknesses. it would most likely need to be greatly simplified. whats good about monster sanctuary?

Kravilion_A

me suggest card game. consider like gba duel masters and ygo games. its should be easy and artist would shamelessly showcase their talent.

skeddles [OP]

whats good about those two games that could be applied here? (haven't played)

[deleted]

Space RPG.

sauri1861

How about a point & click adventure game?

skeddles [OP]

that might work, but im not familiar enough with the genre to say. we probably wouldn't be able to do lots of animations for when people are clicking on things, but maybe there's a way to do it so you don't need much more than a background?

ryanelthelyanel

Could we combine the rpg adventure with turn based battle? I love a good turn based rpg and I think the fantasy setting is broad enough to feature a lot of art from this sub. Also sign me up ! I'd love to enlist.

skeddles [OP]

possibly, but I worry it would be biting off more than we can chew. we would most likely have to start with one as the main goal of the project, and then add support for the other if we have time and resources.

The-Incognito-One

I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE PLAYER / NPC SPRITES FOR THAT GAME AS A SIDE PROJECT FOR FREE !!!

i dont want anything from you i just want to help with creation of that game.

MaximusJet

this seemse awesome!

katoyamka

I'm in

Player_X_YT

I would love to write some code for the game, I can't draw in any format but I can program...

digiur

Ditto! Can we support the effort by contributing code only?

TopSloth

Adding to this, if we use a very universal coding software we can even have tidbits of code made from all the members who can program (not me) might even get a better final product then hiring

AmberFall92

This sounds so cool~ can I still join?

skeddles [OP]

yes we are still in the planning phase

AmberFall92

Great~! Then I'm in.

tormentalist

Will artists be compensated if their work is used, or is it all "prizes for a few best artists"?

skeddles [OP]

we will only be able to do a few prizes, not for everyone who contributes

Dry_Low_6705

I think that a tactical character arena would be very cool. I only started my pixel art journey recently but I would like to contribute.

Remyrue

An RPG would definitely give the opportunity to show off a lot of varied character designs and art, which would be cool. I'm not a pixel artist, but if you guys need music for your game, I could compose. Also feel free to use any of my music on my channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT1bstjSd28) , Could be useful for an RPG type game

Calmest_Muffin

I can do art, and if or rather when I have the time their animations. also my vote is on the RPG.

[deleted]

I would go for the side shooting scroller. I would participate and help with concept art after I master my own art as a beginner but it sounds really good.

ixalegames

I think card based games might be the best idea. As the whole event will be artist focused it gives more freedom for the submissions. And also this might be one of the easiest game to develop compared to other options.

Pixel-Bones

What engine would it be in? Will we be roping in other subreddits like programmers or is this all gonna be done within this subreddit? I’m an unreal 4 developer as are my friends so I’d be biased in that regard if this ever comes to a vote.

Throwing my hat in the ring for a fun not to serious card game so everyone can contribute a card to the game and show off their pixel prowess.

[deleted]

Battle RPG with Reddit avatars where you go to different subreddits/worlds to battle viruses or hackers that would try to take control of these worlds and they could all be part of a team of which you defeat the boss at the end of the game

You could collect new weapons and armour of course.

Basically a Reddit Battle RPG
