Asuna’s Radiant Light was kinda off, it’s too bulky. Is it suppose to be a rapier rather than a normal one hand sword?

Other than that, the episode was perfect.

Omg i missed “Strength and Tenderness” ost so much.

Whose voice was it announcing the next episode title? Renly?

Also Heartless choice? Cant remember anything in LN about choice regarding possible content bout next episode. Cutting Dark Knight and Pugilist’s rope?

seitaer13

Probably the suicide mission Gabriel orders the Pugilists and Dark Knights to attempt to cross the ravine

stormyx22

or maybe Asuna because starts to think she has to kill in order to protect the world, even if she doesn't want to because they are real fluctlights

dark77638

Or maybe Account Conversion choice? Nah?

BleedingUranium

She already did that last episode, literally before she even landed.

stormyx22

yes, but her inner monologue comes after that

tself55

I'm pretty sure it's referring to Renly sending hundreds of dark territory soldiers plunging into the chasm when he cuts the ropes.

diesal3

Asuna’s Radiant Light was kinda off, it’s too bulky. Is it suppose to be a rapier rather than a normal one hand sword?

Yup, that should be a rapier, not a one-handed sword.

seitaer13

"Why...? Because Kirito is mine!"

Freenore

I cringed at this line, because firstly, she's fighting someone who has no idea about who she is, how on earth is she going to explain herself by sword play? A better solution would've been to tell Alice to stop and that they can talk about this.

Secondly, I always dislike whenever a character says that another character 'belongs' to them, like a toy. I know it is used as a way of dominance in romance, and sometimes it's cute (when it's said in a lighthearted way), but whenever someone says "you're mine and mine alone", it just makes me cringe.

Don7Quijote

Our first Kirisuna intrraction since Alicization started.

We did get a teaser for my four waifus and a funeral. Hopefully we'll get more on that next week.

Seeing Alice and Asuna fight was as funny as I hoped it would be, but it was Bercoulli's nonchalant reaction the real highlight.

We also got a sorely needed explanation of the existance of code 871 and the existance of a traitor inside Rath.

diesal3

Bercoulli's nonchalant reaction the real highlight.

It's almost like Bercouli's having a dad (of Kirito) moment, watching two young women having a serious fight over Kirito. And then how he barges in to stop it, showing both of them that he's in the one that's really in charge.

BleedingUranium

This, along with how straightforwardly he accepts Asuna's massive revelation that they're all "living in a simulation", and then also puts together Vector is just like Asuna are why I love Bercouli so much.

nickal_alteran1988

Pretty sure there has been no mention of a simulation from asuna actually

BleedingUranium

She comes from a world/universe outside their own, this was very much brought up and discussed.

nickal_alteran1988

Objectivly it does not mean that they are in a simulation, it is a very fine line but i do not think it has been crossed. Thats why asuna refused to answer at some point

BleedingUranium

The entire point of this story arc is there is no line to cross. The idea of a "simulation" is that said place is "fake", or otherwise less "real" that our current reality, and that runs contrary to literally every single SAO arc, it's a core theme of the series.

Shino covers this well near the end of Phantom Bullet, stating that even if our/her reality was revealed to be a game/simulation/etc, it would still be reality to her.

xestructor

hope kirito recovers

piscijac

Saaame, can't wait to see him and asuna fight together again. Those are always some of my favorite scenes

Trickot851

I don't remember any teaser for a funeral, could you explain?

UCCMaster

Cute episode. They did a great job showing Asuna and Alice interacting.

Poor Ronie, they cut out her line about being jealous that Kirito had so many powerful and beautiful women around him.

SKStacia

I'm pretty sure the, "Why are they all girls?", line comes right after Sinon introduces herself.

diesal3

they both happen, but I thought the Sinon one was said by Alice

SKStacia

The only earlier thing I'm remembering right off is Ronye commenting about how, "He's my senpai, too...", just after Tieze walked off.

The other one was Ronye, and in fact it had to be, as Alice had already been abducted and was unconscious when Sinon arrived.

BleedingUranium

They did a stellar job making Asuna and Alice's sparring (physical and verbal) really feel sort of playful (even if they're being "serious") rather than overtly hostile towards each other. The (classic pre-Alicization) silly music theme, the sword-hitting sounds being (while powerful) rather dull and clangy giving off the image of training swords etc (as in, creating the tone of the fight being non-lethal), and of course capping off the episode with both of their warm smiles certainly helped this too.

This all definitely came across better than it did in the novel.

Alice Stans, we here: https://imgur.com/a/QQVh58d

It’s here. Finally. I’ve waited YEARS to see most of the scenes in this episode animated and was not disappointed at all. What an episode, seeing Alice and Asuna duke it out, the two getting jealous, everyone coming forward with their feelings about Kirito, phew. A-1 have spared no expense this season and have reached unlimited budget works level of sexiness.

Begs the question, what does it take to push it over an 8 on MAL? The number of 5 and below reviews are shocking. If you don't like SAO at this point, you never will, just give up the hating, lol.

What a week for SAO. Kirito tops top male characters of the decade list from NewType, volume 23 drops, SAO it’s top of AnimeTrending list, whew. The hate circle-jerk against SAO seems to be dying or at least getting pushback.

Alicization is exploding.

I_Love_Alice

You always seem to be so concerned with MAL just about every week when you post. Why give MAL any attention in the first place? Who cares how SAO (or any other show) is being treated on there? It's more of a circlejerk than reddit, and its show/review scores have absolutely zero impact on the industry. Most of the reviews are complete drivel, and seasonal shows will get voted into the top 10 of all time for a while, despite being completely forgotten 3 months later. Outside of logging stuff you watch and finding series' information, the site is useless.

All that "matters" is stuff like Newtype and other Japanese ranking polls; places that studios and marketing will actually look at in order to gauge if something is still trending and worth producing more of.

[deleted]

can you tell me which part of LN is this eps ?

[deleted]

16 ch 9

Darudius

I hope i dont get downvoted but this was my least favourite part of the LN, well the Alice and Asuna moments rather. I just didn't like the way Alice acted here, all superior, and whenever Alice interacts with Asuna really and why Asuna didnt just straight up tell Alice what their relationship was especially, cant remember the volume now, when they all talk about their relationship with Kirito in the caravan like they did this episode.

I'm jumping the gun, apologies, but even towards the end of Alicization, Kirito doesnt put Alice in her place and tell her about him and Asuna and she continues to act like she knows Kirito more and is superior. I know Reki has stated Alice is not in love with Kirito but that's bull imo. Those are the only parts that bothered me about alicization and I hope it's not continued in Unital Ring. Rest was fantastic. I havent read unital ring so I dont know if alice is still acting the same way but I hope not.

Adlet_maia

I think that may be because Japanese tend to be more reserved when talking about love and relationships.

seitaer13

This, they've never talked about their relationship to others the entire series. New characters like Sinon just have to figure it out.

Queen Bee doing what she can to assert her territory in the face of predators.

Ryuuji_Gremory

But Asuna straight up told her that Kirito belongs to her and that they have been dating for 2 1/2 years.

As for Alice she just has to make everything a pissing contest, just like some light-hearted teasing from Fanatio turns into a real argument.

[deleted]

They had a child together....

Ryuuji_Gremory

Well they adopted a child, yes. But I don't see how exactly that relates to my comment that Asuna straight up told Alice that Kirito is "her's" and that they have been partners for 2 years, dating for 2 1/2 and lived together for two weeks.

[deleted]

Just thought it gives her another leg up

[deleted]

I'm with you man. I understand how you feel. When I read this moment in the light novel, I really didn't like how Alice was so haughty and stubborn, and her interactions with Asuna really not made me like Alice as a character. It's as if they share a cruel fate where they are destined to fight any time they look at each other (Hanagai).

However, someone pointed out that arguably, Kirito was the one that showed Alice feelings, so in a sense, she feels protective of him as he was the one that opened up her world and such. Knowing that, I guess I can understand Alice's actions a bit. Still don't really like her as much as the others though.

Also, shame on Kirito for not clarifying his relationship with Asuna to others.

Magister_Xehanort

I find it funny that Alice is the least known to him, she just stayed with him for one night

zapper163

Man, I totally agree with that.

[deleted]

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah, I never really liked Alice because of her reactions in the novel when meeting Asuna

heyheyheyx4

now spoil me, who was the SPY that asuna talked about. I WANT TO KNOW

tself55

He's not really been mentioned much in the anime up to this point, I think we got like one foreshadowing scene in the first half where he walked past Asuna on Ocean Turtle and it kinda implied he recognized her. More details about who he is come later in the show.

piscijac

What ep was that in? Wanna go back and re-watch :P

tself55

Hmm I’d have to say like episode 10 or 11 or so, the one where Kirito and Eugeo are taken to the cathedral and Asuna has breakfast with Rinko

load 1 more replies →

KaiserNazrin

That person was in this episode.

haschcookie

Should be that one. I asked myself "wait who the fuck was this again?" until the line about the spy was spoken

Who is it?

karl11235812

yanai the code 871 if you know what i mean~~~~~~~~~

nickal_alteran1988

Background and all or just who does he look like loll

[deleted]

I always wondered...how would Alice react if Asuna said that she and Kirito had a child together....

[deleted]

[deleted]

[deleted]

Did Yui become the "Yui" that we know now due to Kirito and Asuna's influence/relationship? Wouldn't that count?

Trickot851

"I want you to tell me everything you know about Kirito". Looks at 16 volumes of the main story, 6 volumes of Progressive and that's not even mentioning Side Stories nor the whole Sugary Days thing. That's definitely going to take a while.

The Waifu Wars is on! The reunion scene felt very emotional and the cat fight was well animated even with Berserk's pan-sword sound effects. It was a fun moment to watch overall, especially with daddy Bercouli nonchalantly stopping the fight.

That said, I've never liked Alice's further reaction in general after being told by Asuna that she was going out with Kirito. I know that in the novel it was stated that it was due to her not understanding said idiomatic expression but still, it's just not my cup of tea.

Now, I'm not sure if they really want to wrap this part of WoU with the cliffhanger of Vol. 16 (that would be the logical choice) but seeing that A-1 still has 2 more episodes to go I would bet that they could try to include the beginning of Vol. 17 and kill the cliffhanger... again. That or they are going for a recap because I can't see how they could stretch the remaining content of Vol. 16.

nonsenceslayer

Great analysis on the episode. Kirito and Asuna relationship are light-year ahead compare to Alice(6 month living in the cabin).

seitaer13

I would assume they end the cour with the first of the red lights of the American players coming down.

nickal_alteran1988

Idk.. isnt leafa and sinon pop out while the battle rages between underworld and the first waves of american?

seitaer13

They don't come in until after the first waves of american players.

Trickot851

That may be what they are aiming for, and they would have to adapt ALO's meeting before the American invasion too.

IMO that situation would feel more like a mild teaser of the things to come than a proper scenario to wrap this cour.

seitaer13

The ALO meeting and Lizbeth's plea should still start the next cour.

They can move things around for maximum dramatic effect

dark77638

Gabriel grabbing Alice at flew away in fromt of everyone eyes with Chaostic Red American army from real world as background would be perfect cliffhanger!

Trickot851

That's a good point, I didn't consider that.

On a related note, I'm waiting to see how A-1 is going to treat the reaction of the pugilists to both the rift and the red army, knowing that they haven't given the Dark Territory armies enough development.

stormyx22

I was so happy to see the reunion animated, dropped some tears. also, I'm so glad Alice and Asuna's interactions are not that bickerish in comparison to the novels

lilsebastian4617

I had a visceral reaction to Kirito hearing Asuna’s voice. It’s been too long...

DibsOnBicy

Hey, I'm not a LN reader but for anyone who has when would you expect Kirito to get out of his coma thing? (I don't mind spoilers but least amount plz)

Thicshigi

Episode 19

Pizza_and_Reddit

Wait so does he have any part to play in the war?

Thicshigi

He's the main character of the show, ofc he will. He will be the one to decide the final outcome of the war.

Pizza_and_Reddit

Thank you ( especially for not going any deeper )

nickal_alteran1988

Id guess at the very end of it or so actually

lufo88

Mmm...so you think A-1 will not animate the side story (volume 19-20)?

Thicshigi

We already know that they won't animate volume 19&20

nickal_alteran1988

I mean they must animate some of the volume 19.. kirito isnt even awake yet at the end of 18

Thicshigi

You're either not caught up or idk but Kirito wakes up atleast 50-60 pages before volume 18 ended.

Volume 19&20 serves no purpose to the story so they won't get animated with WoU. If A1 wants to cashcow later then it's upto them but right now it won't.

nickal_alteran1988

My bad, thought the 18 was the 17 lol geez, thought it would be at least near the beginning of the 18 lol

Thicshigi

Oh!? You are talking about Underworld? Then that would be beginning of volume 18. I thought you meant real world when you said that.

nickal_alteran1988

Corect :P that makes more sense with what you’ve said haha 😂

lufo88

That's sad 😔

The Goddess descends!

I say that I didn’t particularly enjoy this string of events while reading the novel but it didn’t stop it from being rather funny to read through.

The reunion made me smile, it’s wonderful to see these two finally meet after what has kind of been so long. Matsu, and with the assistance of the animation staff, had gone beyond my expectations for this moment of the book. I was hoping for a new track though.

The catfight! Asuna always gets the well-animated duels, but it was hilarious all-in-all. Didn’t expect to see Alice rush in with her «Enhance Armament» like that. And the sound effects for the clashing swords took me out for a bit. Good thing Bercouli-jii was there to interfere at least. Loving all the time he is having on-screen.

Nothing much to say about the truth of the Underworldians’ current situation, what I was most captivated by was the lighting. It was perfect.

And then the slumber party. I just so happen to not mind this sudden silliness amidst what has happened in the past episodes. It’s nice seeing the girls, get together and talk about Kiritard in animated form, a little different (I think) but heartwarming all the same. But now that it’s over we’re going to dive into the even harder parts of this arc.

Pouting Alice is cute.

Now that I see it, that’s a fearsome power, A-chan. Next: Heartless Choice.

_AstralPhoenix_

Where can you guys read a light novel!? Please send link

Jackski

There are links at the top of the subreddit

ExInfernum

So at what point do you guys think this cour will leave off? Like, what do you think they'll end episode 12 off on?

SaintNeos

Well, first time I was actually too busy to watch the episode as it came out, so instead of the usual review I will just say...reminder that even as a potato Kirito gets more girls than we will ever do XD

Also, anyone knows if there are actually gonna be recap episodes now?

Siglius

There isn't. We're going straight into V17 content.

SaintNeos

Really? I could swear I have read everywhere recap episodes are coming O.O

Siglius

No way. Why would there be recap episodes?
