Lady Gaga's fiancé, Michael Polansky, runs a company that takes discarded human skin (mostly from plastic surgery), keeps it alive for a month so they can test cosmetics on it
Polansky just did an interview with TechCrunch, which is where I learned about all this for the first time!

I'd take this over animal testing

Honestly, this is genius. No one harmed, it's technically bio waste anyways.
The only concern would be ensuring DNA and identity is not housed anywhere. Otherwise, this works for me.

From the article:
I assume they don't collect the DNA profiles, and after the skin dies it's probably disposed of via incineration.

I don’t see the issue unless they don’t try to help lower the medical bills of the donated and the choice to share that. I would even be okay with them in keeping my donated material away from the Israeli military because I didn’t sign up to be a donor to help Israel observe dead bodies being blown up. (This was a recent scandal involving USC sharing catheters with the Israeli military).

And unlike animals this isn’t just similar to humans this is from an actual human

There is an ethics class debate about this involving a woman named Henrietta Lacks.
She had cells taken from her body without being asked. They were used to create the first immortal human cells, called HeLa cells. These concepts go into things like informed consent.

Agreed, unless the skin is unethically sourced.
um_-_no 210 points · Aug 2026
Yes that was my concern! My instinct is this sounds great, but if they're scalping prisoners or running exploitative practises to get skin from under privileged people then uh oh
It seems unlikely to me, but fucking hell in this world, idek anymore
runner64 342 points · Aug 2026
Tbh I don’t think they’d need to, people are getting tummy tucks and breast lifts constantly.
Pale-Proposal8046 148 points · Aug 2026
I was gonna say lol there's not exactly a shortage of people voluntarily removing their skin.
hellolovely1 14 points · Aug 2026
Especially now that we have Ozempic.
MCRV11 7 points · Aug 2026
Super morbidly obese people who manage to get down to healthy weights and want excess skin removed too.
There's usually a LOT of excess skin in those situations

Luckily in la theres plenty of people carving chunks off. Surprised no ones started a soap business with the fat.

There is one guy who did just that, but his company seems like a cult. They're always chanting about "Robert Paulson."

Fun fact (not): there’s a cosmetic injectable made of organ donor fat and 99% of donors don’t even know that’s a possibility for their remains 🙃 Oh and it’s of course sold for profit! And you can’t always opt out of it anyway!
MsBit_Commit 27 points · Aug 2026 · Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling
Here’s the thing about organ donation: there is a LOT of you. Not all of your organs will be in perfect condition to save a heart patient or lung patient. There’s still 100+ pounds of Person to deal with. On me, that’s gonna be a lot of fat. God knows nobody is gonna want my eyeballs, and I’m asthmatic so probably not my lungs, either. It might as well go somewhere.
GlassPomoerium 11 points · Aug 2026 · controversies: girl
For sure it’s very zero-waste lol. If donors are informed of it ahead of time, sure. But most people don’t know their fat can be sold and used for unnecessary cosmetic procedures, a few people surveyed in the article actually removed their names from the donor registry. But I’m sure some Kardashian fans would be like

I think informed consent is honestly more important in general- right now, you tick a box and you’re an organ donor. I have no idea how any of my parts will be used, and maybe we should broaden that conversation.

Honestly this is the problem with a lot of human based testing over animal testing. Like yes we should move away from animal testing where we can, but a lot of human based testing is unethical in one way or another.

That’s a valid concern, but the fault for that would lie with the sourcing company and not Outer-Bio.

Yeah it kind of sounds terrifying, but much preferable to many other alternatives when you think about it

As a scientist, a patch of skin cannot replace full body models. A patch of skin doesn’t have an immune system or nervous system or circulatory system or any other “system” that is required to really see if there are problems with a drug or cosmetic or anything else sold or given to consumers.

SAY IT LOUDER!!!
This is brilliant! I hope more employ it. There is no reason animal testing should be conducted on animals, especially for cosmetics and hair products.

This is the exact point! Same as organoid models. Some things don’t need live animal models, and the NIH is finally agreeing.
