What’s going on with r/ice_poseidon becoming quarantined?

What’s going on with r/ice_Poseidon being quarantined? What’s up with his sub? (I cant see it as Im only on mobile and it says his sub was removed/private so I am sorry if I cant get in there and see if their mods made a comment or update. )

EDIT: Sorry if this question has brought conflict or arguments between anyone in the replies, this was not my intention.

Also what did he get banned from twitch for?

[deleted]

He had a couple of bans and warnings before this, but he was permabanned when he made evident his flight number and someone swatted the flight and I believe accused Ice of being a terrorist to the cops, which got him arrested and then banned.

Jakewadewood

He got banned on twitch when he was livestreaming his flight and someone swatted him as the plane was about to take off. This went viral and gave twitch some bad press. So they banned him!

Just_Floatin_on_bye

Didn’t they ban him before they had a rule about something like that? I remember there being drama about that when it happened.

Joe2596_

Told people what flight he was going on and he got swatted on a plane.

Nolar2015

Not sure, but twitch bans people for anything really. Even things your audience does. A couple people got banned for playing songs by their audiences that ended up being racist

ReeseSlitherspoon

They're effectively banning streamers with high viewer engagement, but low oversight on that engagement, because they're the ones who are most likely to accidentally bring down a shitstorm on themselves and/or the company. The idea seems to be that a streamer with lots of volatile prankster viewers should be more careful about revealing personal info, and if he isn't, then he's a liability to the company.

Obviously this goes too far with the song thing, but I don't know where the line is drawn-it needs adjusting.

UndercoverNorman

Ice is a streamer on YouTube, formerly Twitch. He used to play Runescape but lost interest and now streams his life to others on the internet. His community is especially known for being "bi-polar" towards anybody in Ice's life. One day somebody could be on the top of their subreddit as a hero, and the next day they are hated for being a child rapist or something.

drphillysblunt

That doesn't answer the ? Of why it's quarantined. His community is toxic as fuck, but did something specific happen?

[deleted]

Yes, reddit wide policy changes

[deleted]

There's a link at the bottom of CringeAnarchy that links to an archive page. The general gist of it is about free speech and data being part of that free speech.

That list also mentioned child porn being covered under the first amendment right...

CringeAnarchy is quarantined as of 27/09. I hope it dies.

Found the link: http://archive.is/d4NPt

I wonder if those will finally hit T_D

Bedrok123

Evicence shows that likely will not happen, and I'm not being cynical just realistic

[deleted]

I’m fine with this. Contained and visible is where those people should be. You can avoid them completely but you know where they are and you can know what they’re up to. Plus victim mentality is their fuel; don’t add to it.

Edit: Meaning: don’t censor them. They’re cock-wombles but keep your cock-wombles where you can see them, and don’t add to their paranoid fantasies of oppression.

[deleted]

So no consequences

Remember that post that outed t_d as actively pushing Russian propaganda?

That post is no more.

[deleted]

The admins have said many times in the past that they want T_D to be up because "their voices must be heard" or something along those lines. And they've been closely cooperating with T_D mods to ensure the sub won't break any rules. Even though it does so all the time. They even changed their algorithm to avoid banning the subreddit.

Why the admins like/support T_D so much is unknown.

Thank you for the information! I did not know that their subreddit was very fickle and extreme to make accusations of this caliber. If this is the case I am content knowing they are quarantined until they get better moderation.

I think this is just reddit, trying to allow free expression of toxic subs by giving them another chance before a complete banning, look closely at the list of other subs that are quarantined.

It seems at the time of today's announcement, several communities were quarantined. Here is the list so far

/r/CringeAnarchy: an unsanctioned spinoff of r/cringepics criticized as a hotbed of virulent racism

/r/WatchPeopleDie: a subreddit full of recordings of people dying, whether through accidents or violent crime

/r/Ice_poseidon: subreddit for the controversial stream Ice Poseidon, who streamed in the "IRL" genre

/r/TheRedPill: a misogynistic subreddit for relationship/life advice based on the subjugation of women

/r/FULLCOMMUNISM: a supposedly satirical subreddit that specialized in memes, possibly quarantined for allowing calls for violence

/r/braincels: where the /r/incels people moved after their subreddit was banned

/r/911truth: jet fuel can't melt reddit HQ

Smaller subreddits will get dumped into this list: r/AganistGayMarriage /r/FragileJewishRedditor /r/mayo_town /r/SubOfPeace /r/WhiteBeauty /r/White_Pride /r/GentilesUnited /r/ZOG /r/GoyimDefenceForce /r/Holocaust, /r/cringe_chaos

Its not like this subs are banned, you get a question before you go there.

Are you sure you want to view this community?

This community is quarantined.

It is dedicated to shocking or highly offensive content.

Are you certain you want to continue?

throwawayyyyyyyyy778

So when will they get un-quarantined ? Do you know?

threeseed

Actually this is more about advertisers.

Quarantined subs are (a) not indexed by Google, (b) not available on /r/all and most importantly (c) not monetised. Which means advertisers can feel safe knowing their companies won't be associated with the content.

BurstEDO

Quarantined subs are (a) not indexed by Google, (b) not available on /r/all

I'm actually really happy about these two elements specifically. /r/all is what lurkers see - particularly people unfamiliar with Reddit who pop over to see what all the fuss is about.

Not being indexed by search engines is important as it will make it more complicated for such awful collections of people to find each other so easily, as well as preventing toxic idiots from finding a fight to pick when they go looking.

LinguisticallyInept

i dont think the users of /r/watchpeopledie are 'vile'; i think its more to do with the content of the subreddit being ethically dubious

Gemmabeta

I think it's more the graphic violence.

SunnyServing

Than what about subs like /r/EnoughInternet?

[deleted]

I can remember that sub hitting r/all once in the last year but I admit I don't have a perfect memory.

[deleted]

Only times I remember were when that reporter got killed and the guy was filming himself shooting her POV style and when ISIS burned the Jordanian pilot. But those were both major news stories.

Imthejuggernautbitch

Yeah that doesn’t play well when people flood the site to see graphic footage of a tragedy.

People forget that most Reddit visitors aren’t even logged in. Just lurking. It makes sense to shield them first. It’s opt-in only.

lol the guy below me u/unclesam1313 is misleading people with made up BS stats. NSFW tagging is also entirely optional and easily circumvented.

Unclesam1313

Most lurkers now would spend their time on r/popular, which automatically filters NSFW content already iirc.

hugglesthemerciless

I almost exclusively browse all, almost daily, and I don't remember the sub hitting all even once

Mahoganytooth

You shouldn't have. The subreddit is set up to not show on r/all in the first place

Lethalmud

I don't think hitting r/all is ever a good thing for a sub.

yeh i completely agree with the quarantine; just a bit iffy on people lumping it in with cesspools like braincels

befron

Yeah I actually really like that sub. I've only ever browsed a few times but it made me appreciate the fragility of life a lot more. Especially things like car accidents, dangerous weather, and general clumsiness.

It definitely made me a much more careful driver and gave me an appreciation for the dangers of floods. Seeing people swept away to their depth in ankle deep water is pretty crazy, I'm definitely going to be more careful around that.

yomamaisonfier

The thing is, I feel like WPD is the black sheep here. These are all subs full of toxic people being dickwads. But WPD is a reality check subreddit, and also for those with strong curiosity. Toxic behavior is frowned upon (and downvoted), and positive comments are quite common. Sympathy is extremely common on /r/watchpeopledie, believe it or not. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people talk about how a video of a suicide has made them re-think killing themselves, or people just talking about it, and being supported by others with nice comments.

Of course toxicity is impossible to get rid of, but every sub on that list is centered around being toxic towards others, except /r/watchpeopledie. That being said, I 100% understand making it not available to r/all. Completely logical decision. But I just feel like it gets a way worse rep than it deserves.

Taddare

Honestly I think r/watchpeopledie was added to keep it from hurting reddit PR. It keeps ads off their pages. Can you imagine how mad a car advertiser would be to have an ad on a page of a video of someone getting run over or something?

[deleted]

Sypmathy is far from common in /r/watchpeopledie, let's not kid ourselves. While positive comments happen and aren't really downvoted, shitty comments and jokes are what get the most upvoted.

I only had to check the top post right now, one about a kid getting hit by a car. The second most-upvoted reply is "/r/kidsarefuckingstupid".

Like I said, let's not make of it what it isn't. I browse the sub from time to time out of morbid curiosity, but the comments are overwhelmingly shitty jokes or outright shitty, rather than positive compassionate comments.

This is a really good way to toe the line between state level hacks and niche idiocy.

I'm kind of impressed.

how do you access them from mobile apps

[deleted]

On Reddit is Fun just swipe from the left or press the three horizontal lines on the top left then type in the name and it will be remembered. Edit to say that I have checked on the Reddit is Fun app and r/watchpeopledie is not accessible.

On Reddit Is Fun, go to the subreddit, tap the 3 dots in upper right and then select reddit in browser.

Im on mobile and I dont get a question if I want to enter it just goes straight to saying it has been removed or privated. Why is he controversial though? He’s just streaming IRL and people swat him, its not his fault.

thefezhat

Streaming IRL while you're at an airport when you know your community has a swatting problem (this was far from the first time this happened to him) is wildly irresponsible. The cloud of toxicity that surrounds Ice is not a coincidence nor is he a blameless victim of it, he cultivated that god-awful community and reaped the consequences.

Edit: Quote from him in the airport stream. ''I'm just on 53A, that's my gate. And I'm not sure telling you guys that is a good idea but what can you possibly do, right? Maybe I shouldn't enable it.'' I can't find a clip of this on account of the ban, but here's a comment from the man himself talking about that joke. This should give you a good idea of why he deserved his ban. He knew exactly what he was doing.

[deleted]

I believe reddit takes into account the comment posts, and the comment posts from reddit.com point of view is that the posts are toxic.

Reddit is a privately owned corporation, funded by a lot of money, hoping some day to sell stock and go public. They need to keep the toxic subs ...quiet or private.

He or the subreddit?

AlwaysDankrupt

neither. some guy that claims to be a "l33t hax0r" used to SWAT Ice_Poseidon everywhere he went just to fuck with him. Technically Ice had no control over it, he actually ended up paying the guy to not do it anymore

Gilthwixt

he actually ended up paying the guy not to do it anymore

What in the fuck? That's so ridiculous I refuse to believe it before seeing proof. Not saying you're lying, it's just so outlandish. Swatting is a crime, the fact that he'd willingly bribe the other guy to stop instead of just....you know, having him locked up instead, is just surreal.

AlwaysDankrupt

Well here's his video he posted after the plane incident.

7:34 & 8:20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl-uu3gwly4

The guy's name is Asik if you want to look into him a bit. Ice has already got the FBI involved, theres nothing else he can really do.

Slight0

The police really need to verify identities of callers or have some protocol to protect against this. It's a flaw in their system and no one else's fault.

/r/fullcommunism has a link to anti-communism sites. IMHO, they tossed that one in there so they couldn't be accused of "censoring right-wing ideas"

Nergaal

Reddit is intolerant of those intolerant of intolerant of intolerants.

LightningDustFan

Except they aren't recommending that place, it seems that it's been put by someone else in their sidebar and they in a post on the topic mock going there. To quote them on the idea

"In the mean time, make sure you visit Stony Brook University to find out what real positive masculinity is.

That's right. The people telling men they shouldn't be heard or seen are telling us they know what real masculinity is."

I don't agree with them but you should at least get who's recommending the place straight.

Edit: As an addition, looking at the Men and Masculinities page it doesn't seem like something the Red Pill people would approve of. They highlight topics like "Guys Who Get It: Men of the Women's Movement" and "Activists Meet Researchers: Challenging Homophobia Challenging Masculinities" along with "Conservatives Find Out Women Are Studying Toxic Masculinity" which is an article about women studying at Stony Brook's Men and Masculinities. So it seems that founder that got #MeToo'd is actually a trope often brought up, the guy who tries so hardcore to be an ally because it turns out he's a shitty person. In short I don't think The Red Pill themselves would advertise a place that teaches people about "Toxic Masculinity" since it's against their core values. It's much more likely it was added by someone else in the quarantine to try and counter them.

beet111

the 911truth sub has another interesting one

It may contain a high degree of misinformation. If you are seeking historic information about the September 11 attacks, please visit the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (https://www.9-11commission.gov/).

Is mayo town an analogy for something? I thought mayo meant mayonnaise, and that mayonnaise isn't something controversial. I'm afraid to see for myself, as I have no idea of what's there.

bunker_man

You can quarantine subs for reasons other than toxicity.

beet111

it's because when new users visit reddit, they don't want those new users to see people being killed. if they use the site long enough, they will find the sub.

ameoba

It is dedicated to shocking or highly offensive content.

wOlfLisK

It's not but to a lot of people, it's seen as quite tasteless. For example, it's blocked in germany iirc. So it's not exactly content reddit wants to be associated with even though they don't want to ban it.

TossMeAwayToTheMount

what exactly is /r/cringe_chaos? it was made 2 hours ago with no posts on it. what did it do to deserve this treatment?

I'm surprised /r/MGTOW isn't there.

That's interesting. Is it just a simple coincidence that all of those subs seem to lean a crertain direction politically and/or socially?

MotorButterscotch

Wpd was neutral as it goes. For a sneak peak at agenda: look at how original comment described poor /r/fullcommunism. He fails to mention the promotion and historical revisionism surrounding gulags. STALIN DID NOTHING WRONG Unbelievable that /r/latestagecapitalism, a sub filled with death threats against others almost daily, is allowed to be on /r/popular. Slow burn, it became a safe haven for a lot of the more extreme conservative subs who got banned a couple weeks back. From there they started posting. I enjoyed it for the most part until it became political.

Reddit for me is like a bar, no politics or religion.

MAKE_ME_REDDIT

The problem is that by giving them a platform, Reddit becomes associated with them. By denying them a platform, they can at least say they don’t approve or support the viewpoints, even if it doesn’t actually get rid of the problem

CommieGhost

Right, except it is quite successful, historically, at getting rid of the problem.

RQ1 aims to understand the effects on users directly involved; whereas RQ2 investigates the second-order effects of closing these subreddits (i.e., “Did Reddit ‘spread the infection’?”). We answer our research questions using observational data from Reddit, through temporal analysis of Reddit timelines (all comments and submissions made in 2015). Working from over 100M Reddit posts and comments, we generate hate speech lexicons to examine variations in hate speech usage via causal inference methods.

Within the frame RQ1 and RQ2 provide, we find that the ban worked for Reddit. Many more accounts than expected discontinued their use of the site; and, among those that stayed active, there was a drastic decrease (of at least 80%) in their hate speech use. Though many subreddits saw an influx of r/fatpeoplehate and r/CoonTown “migrants,” those subreddits saw no significant changes in hate speech use. In other words, other subreddits did not inherit the problem. We conclude by reflecting on the apparent success of the ban. We note that while the ban may have worked for Reddit, from a macro-perspective, it may have also relocated the behavior onto other sites.

Emphasis in the original text. The whole paper is quite interesting and a good read if you'd like.

I unsubbed from there on an old account back in late 2016/early 2017, that's about when the extreme shit really erupted to the surface (ie, anyone promoting western liberalism in general was downvoted to oblivion, one of my own comments got to -40 for asking for evidence as to why a person believed blacks were pre-disposed to crime. It was that bad)

I joined when it was still somewhat small, when it was like a combination of /r/justneckbeardthings, /r/okbuddyretard, /r/yiffinhell, /r/menkampf, and /r/insanepeoplefacebook. I'll try to characterize it at the time as best I can.

Basically, it was a cringe subreddit for anything deemed 'too extreme' for the main cringe subs, and really any form of cringe that didn't fit in anywhere else. Hence the name, cringeanarchy.

For some reason the main cringe subs, at the time, were insanely ban-happy. They banned the kind of content you would now expect to see on subs like /r/justneckbeardthings, as they considered anything making fun of fandoms (furries, bronies, FNAF, weebs) or really anything poking fun at neckbeard-y characters in general to be a form of bullying.

This is what drove me there around 2014-ish, b/c I though the whole 'bullying' thing was insane. Remember, this was years before the alt right was even a thing.

Then gamergate happened, and it became a general meme sub for anyone who disliked mainstream liberal rhetoric. From there it sort of got gradually more extreme until Trump came along, and this gradual slip towards hate got jacked up until you started seeing blatant, hardcore racism, which is about when I jumped ship.

Quasi-Stellar-Quasar

The sad thing is it's only just recently happened. I'd been sub'd to it for over a year and never saw anything as vile as what's been on there recently. It used to be funny and now it's just a smorgasbord of racism and alt-right bullshit.
