Damn did this dude legit kill his childhood friend to eat her soul? Kids these days are weird.

AFellow_2003

Well, he had a bit of (insane/psychopathic) logic in the LN.

Basically, both Gabriel and Alicia were from very wealthy families and so they lived pretty luxurious lives. Then Japan America got hit with an economic recession and Alicia's family lost most of their wealth. So Gabriel thought to himself "It would such a pity for someone as radiant and lively as Alicia to inevitably lose all that radiance as she sinks into poverty. She'd be much better off dying as she is today".

Edit: Fixed Gabe's original country.

Bleusilences

Maybe they will bring up more context later on, but for now the point they wanted to make is to show him "eat" souls and where it started.

Noicedeadmemes

Actually, I believe they lived in america

I_cant_finish_my

Aren't you supposed to tag these as spoilers?

halcy

Okay but what the heck is with that flashback? Are we just seeing through his eyes and he’s imagining things or did he somehow eat a soul, in the real world, whatever that means?

Thicshigi

Gabriel himself isn't sure whether it was real or imagination. He just saw it happen but that feeling he got is stuck in his mind and is a driving force for him. Since this is his inner thoughts, so I won't mark, as they already went ahead but he IS looking to taste a soul again.

yolvenzind

I honestly think him being able to eat those souls is a form of incarnation right?

BleedingUranium

Yes, because he's making something true by imagining/believing it to be happening.

That's what makes it work so well; it doesn't matter if he didn't actually eat Alicia's "soul" (more likely he's just batshit crazy) but because he believes he did, he can therefore make that an actual reality in Underworld, thanks to Incarnation and the STL.

(Eats a soul) If this low life woman's soul tasted this sweet... Alice... Your soul must be.. the SWEETEST!!

Psycho bastard. Killed two people in love TT_TT and fucking ate them/soul

anime46

Honestly wasn’t really that perturbed by him killing his friend. I’m more shook by him seeing an ACTUAL SOUL in the real world. Does that mean there is magic? Or he has magic? Or is he just crazy? Or is this some breaking the 4th wall shit and he realizes their reality is also a simulation?

BleedingUranium

It means he's batshit crazy and hallucinated it in such a very "emotionally charged" situation.

But the flip side of that is because he believes he can do that, the nature of the STL and Underworld means he can make that ability real within Underworld, simply by believing it to be true (meaning, Incarnation).

Kaen_Yokio

Yea ikr he ended his own love story for his soul eating fetish what the heck man

dark77638

OMG, fucking Gabriel.

Even though im a LN reader, i thought i was prepared, A-1 proved me wrong.

I already knew Alicia and Lipia fate but this is too much. Poor Alicia, Poor Lipia and Shasta. I feel them.

On the other hand, A-1 did amazing job displaying Emperor Vector absolute authority in the Dark land.

Also, good job on displaying how dreadful and disgusting can Gabriel Miller be.

BZNATC

The Alicia thing was for sure a WTF moment.

alice_is_garbage

I fucking loved Lipia, and i hardly like characters after 1 episode but holy fuck the first time it happens she dies, for fucks sake...

BleedingUranium

Yep, I can guarentee Lipia would have been Sachi all over again for me, if I hadn't read the novels and known this happens. :(

alice_is_garbage

:((((((((((

Nashetania

They killed off Lipia wayyy to soon. She looked like such an interesting character:(

alice_is_garbage

Yep.... i am really sad about this

[deleted]

wait so is the guy legit dead? i expected more of the good guys in the dark territory :/ damn this gabriel though, that was quite shocking.. good villain!

8ShotsOfTequila

Me to husband: I bet those two join up with Kirito.

5 seconds later: or not I guess

kimmaaaa

Same conversation with my fiancé, and then they brought out the box with the covering on it, he’s like, I bet that’s her head. 🤢

frs-1122

Yeah, both Lipia and Shasta are... dead, unfortunately.

Ao1Yamada

I fucking hate this guy holy shit

Xiilfox

Shasta: This man's soul is schrodinger's cat

tykimchi78

So it's either there or not there? o_0

Stealthality

But its and instead of or

[deleted]

OMG! I thought Administrator is already the worst, but Gabriel is even worse ....

From Sugou, to Zaza, to Administrator, now up to Vector. The evilness of the antagoinsts just gets darker than any we’ve seen earlier.

[deleted]

Growlest

Even though Akihiko isn't as messed up as these guys, technically he probably has the most kill count.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Growlest

Not in the situation were most of the masses died attempting to log out by dying in game, or when monsters kill them. Everything apart from the pvp instance is his fault.

BleedingUranium

Not really, as SAO as a game was fundamentally designed to be fair, something Kirito and Asuna specifically had a conversation about in the Murder Case episode.

Kayaba is on one had responsible for all deaths because he trapped everyone and made it a death game, but on the other hand not responsible for any in the sense that all players were in control of their own destinies within the game.

HakuOnTheRocks

Basically put them in a sandbox and set the difficulty level of life to hardcore mode.

Db4d_mustang

Damn what an episode. The Alicia thing got me good.

Ao1Yamada

Why are the rich people always mentally disturbed

Bleusilences

It's not that rich people are necessary more disturbed then other people, is more that some can get away with some pretty horrific stuff and it compounds over time.

Ao1Yamada

Into stuff like having a child who murders his friends.

iamuarpapa

The episode was animated absolutely amazingly, can’t wait to see asuna and alice make first contact. P.S. I’m still infatuated with the ED it’s the best.

Mystic_Arts

Honestly I just can't wait. It better be within the next two episodes. I just have a vision of Asuna running up to kirito and hugging him, Alice only seeing from behind and just rushing in to murder Asuna or some shit. The meeting of the two best girls is gonna be amazing

integralmonkey

yeah this ed is second to niji no kanata imo

iamuarpapa

Na man I have to disagree, it’s the best out of all the EDs that have come out yet imo.

Edit: out*

Wtf Gabriel is a fucking murder

ishallleavethisblank

Ikr! How in the world did they cover up Alicia's murder story. But then again.... rich people -_-#

[deleted]

I was like wtf this dude just killed his own childhood friend just to have that feeling. This guy is ticking all of the boxes to be a serial killer

ishallleavethisblank

I had a feeling he'd kill her. She interrupted him from squishing the mantis' head. But what got me was the way he did... he literally stabbed her in her ears o.O and held her til she died wtf all the while just waiting for her soul to emerge out. WTAF

damastaping

not even one ep and they killed my fav character Lipia >:(

PinesCyrex

Is it me or does Shasta and Lipia somewhat resemble Bercouli and Fanatio, I can't be the only one that sees this

BleedingUranium

Yep, they were pretty much their exact counterparts on the opposite side, which is another point in favour of a potential peace. :(

LordAds

I wanted so much some Kirito time...BUT This episode was insanely good. As an anime-only guy i didn't know this guy before. I thought he is just an evil but very good strategist but now i can't imagine better antagonist and king for the dark territory than this cruel, soulless psychopath who is furthermore a very clever and good leader.

Fluffyteddybear0

It was too soon, poor Lipia and Shasta, they were gone too soon

ma103

What's up with seeing soul in real life? Is it just his imagination?

I hate this dude already

Kirito needs to dual slash his ass to pieces asap

BleedingUranium

It's left ambiguous, but given the real-life part of SAO has always been pretty grounded in reality, and Gabriel was clearly already not right in the head, it's almost certain that it was just an extention of him being fucking nuts and hallucinating it.

HakuOnTheRocks

Fucking nuts is probably the best way to describe this guy's insanity. Yikes.

[deleted]

[deleted]

JeremyDaBanana

Neither was Alicia.

ishallleavethisblank

So... Both the good guys are dead... She didn't even get to say "yes" to the marriage proposal..!! TT_TT

Gabriel legit needs to be put in an asylum. That dude's a psychopath! He killed his childhood friend by stabbing into her ears!! STABBING HER EARSSS!!!

Still no Asuna... Hopefully we get to see her next week! I've had enough of that crazy psychopath for now.

[deleted]

Isn’t Shasta the dude that made Fanatio what she is? The one who she thought looked down on her?

BleedingUranium

He was. And, this is my own speculation, but as Shasta was a pretty smart and perceptive guy, I have to wonder if the look he gave Fanatio was him (correctly) thinking she might be together with Bercouli, and that in that sense they mirrored him and Lipia, thus the look of compassion (?) she mistook for being simply because she was a woman.

Either way, Lipia herself, being a badass, capable Knight itself confirms that Shasta would not have been looking down on her like Fanatio thought he was.

Ryuuji_Gremory

Well Lipia only came to work under him 4 years ago when she was 21 and he points out that he is quite a bit older then her, in theory he could have met Fanatio long before he ever encountered Lipia and could have changed since then, maybe because he met Lipia.

But well I like your interpretation more.

Siglius

He is yeah.

Ubway

As in recent weeks, I will try to summarize as much as I think.

The episode begins magnificent, exposing us, immediately, what is the biggest question that guides all the pathology of the villain. A typical curiosity of a more innocent being, a child, which serves as a trigger for an entire psychosis, a chronic delirium. Gabriel is not a villain the viewer should sympathize with, but the approach Kawahara has chosen is fantastic.

Miller is completely consistent in his leadership characteristics, as we have seen in the respect he imposes on the team in EP3, and now in EP4, in the discursive ability he demonstrates. Unlike him, Vassago is much more a high-level soldier, a barbarian troublemaker of great military and physical potential. This "team" between the two is something to praise again here. But if that wasn't enough, we needed to be in touch with the construction of all the villain's thinking and motive. It was necessary to explain minimally the origin of this "fetish" for souls that Gabriel developed. And again, this is very well done.

Of course, for the situation to develop, Kawahara found a perfect solution: the break, made in the previous episode, of the stereotype built by the Axiom Church that everyone in the Dark Territory were barbarians and troublemakers like the Goblins. Shasta himself even questions this stereotype in the episode. In fact, both Lipia and Shasta have traces of humanity and go against this paradigm that is created for us. Not only do they possess passionate emotions and feelings, but they rationally see the damage created by the possibility of war (the power imbalance and an expanded nation that would start in ruins). The way in which Lipia acts of her own accord is phenomenal, adding independence, resolution and consolidating Shasta's influence on her thinking.

But this is where the episode intensifies further. Gabriel's recollection of the sensation of souls and the height of their delirium comes in response to a characteristic created from the beginning on UWO. See how nothing is convenient here. Kawahara doesn't create elements to make Plot follow, but rather builds the story with planning, probably already wondering what would happen. And finally we saw the horror: Gabriel and Alicia, under a clearing, the girl being the first victim of the pathology. We watched in horror at the scene of a psychosis beginning, while we saw the character imagining and hallucinating, fantasizing with his pioneering act, the beginning of his madness. It is as if we can watch first and third person a madman, a drunk, understanding what's going on in his head and having the shock of perspective.

The nostalgic sensation is important for him to lose control of the shock of finally experiencing that experience in a concrete way (since the previous murders are manifestations of pathology). But, as if that wasn't enough, Miller still gives another demonstration of how unquestionable leadership skills he has in dealing with a tyrannical, irreducible and efficient manner of attempting betrayal. Worthy of earlier medieval times (and it should be remembered that this is the setting of UWO), he uses Lipia as an example for intimidating riots and at the same time creatively for identifying the culprit. The way he terrifies is felt even in us viewers, and the animation of the scene in which Shasta encounters the pain of loss, with the fall of his beloved, is, comparable to Eugeo's EP19 scene, extremely creative. , touching and difficult to do, animating something completely abstract that are the feelings.

In my watching experience, I myself felt Shasta's pain. And it is this pain, on the same basis that Gabriel explains his "soul tasting" in UWO, that dictates a Fluctlights response. Each element of the scene struck me as fitting for the explanation, as we see the soul's walk along the Lightcube, followed by a perfect explanatory dialogue. In the words of the Black Knight: "A man who knows nothing about the brightness of life, soul or love. That is why he goes after the souls of others. This man cannot be killed by a murderous sword ... because this man's soul is alive and dead at the same time. " I don't know if I got it completely right, but in my interpretation Shasta's attack is a manifestation of the Power of Imagination described in the first half of Alicization. Furthermore, the fact that he is able to visualize the "void" in Gabriel's soul is due to the already mentioned connection between the Fluctlights. I felt really bad for the two "humanized knights" at the end of the scene.

The impact of each of the scenes, each expression, cartoonization, vocal performance, and especially the texts, are perfect in my view, as are the animation and the OST. I believe this is the best episode of this half and perhaps one of the best of all of anime. Heavy applause.

StarForceStelar

Yep basically Shasta's attack was casting death or deleting the fluctlight of whoever he touched through incarnation

BleedingUranium

That's actually exactly it. His attack was not a numerical/stats-based game-system attack, he was directly attacking and destroying their FluctLights, destroying their very consciousnesses in their lightcubes. It was uncounterable in every way, no defense nor amount of Life/HP would protect against it.

But because Gabriel is so fucked up, he has this gaping "hole" in his FluctLight, his "soul"/self, and Shasta's attack therefore had no effect, and he was simply absorbed and vanished into nothing himself.

This also makes Gabriel and interesting foil to Kirito, being his polar opposite in every way, but also both (currently) having a "hole" in their FluctLight that needs filling/repairing.

Redmon425

Damn that shit got dark! I was real nervous he was going to rape her, especially after the foreshadowing last episode about marriage. So in a way, I am glad it was only death lol!

The animation was insane when he became some type of tornado (I have no idea what was going on, but it looked good)

Main villain straight up crazy. However, what they hell is up with this eating soul thing?! When he killed his childhood friend, that was in the real world, so how the hell did he eat her soul?!?!

The ED is fucking so good. I honestly think it has potential to be one of the best ED's of all time, for sure the best SAO ED ever and best this season of anime.

Anyone know why this episode isn’t on Hulu?

Ryuuji_Gremory

He didn't eat Alicia's soul, he knows what he saw but he himself doesn't know if it was reality, that could be just the delusions of a psychotic child.

seitaer13

The tornado is another example of Incarnation.

UltraMagnus23

Holy shit. This episode was fucking graphic. But phenomenal, nonetheless.

Damn.. and here i thought the Pontifex was bad. Made her look like child’s play.

Hype to see the next episode.

AldoFlores737

This episode was SO intense. Had me in shock

hashtaters

Where is everyone watching this? I don't see it on Hulu.

spike021

All the complaints I've seen, sort of in /r/anime and elsewhere about how the Incarnation System wasn't really explained is disappointing to me, as someone who watched Accel World. AW did a fairly decent job of it.

seitaer13

The anime has always failed at mechanics. But incarnation was explained pretty well back in the Sword academy. Episode 7-8. Both Kirito's duel with Volo and him regrowing the flowers. Volo's power of imagination is even directly referenced.

Granted all the references to Incarnation in later episodes aren't there, but it is explained in the anime and well enough that anyone could understand it.

spike021

While those scenes at the academy work for us, I still don't think they're really descriptive enough.

It sucks but a lot of people who watch movies and shows/anime typically want a super straightforward way to ground what they're watching, and sometimes it has to be constantly highlighted/explained, otherwise it falls off a bit for them.

BleedingUranium

That's still more of an audience-problem than a show-problem though.

plsdonthurtmi

Studio doesn't make plot point super duper 100% obvious

Audience: This show sucks I can't understand anything!

Studio explains plot point in depth

Audience: This show sucks the episode is full of explanations and speaking!

BleedingUranium

It's sad how very true that is.

So we get a confirmation that sole willpower can bend this system, just like in Aincrad, eh?

Also that bit of gore with screwdriver was totally unexpected and feels like the darkest thing in whole SAO untill now

seitaer13

They told you that all the way back in like episode 8, and have shown it multiple times afterwards.

yolvenzind

Well I never really thought about why he froze her head. But now you say it. I think broken / dead objects in the underworld quickly loose "life" right. So I think to be able to show his subjects her head he had to freeze it. Otherwise it would have despawned lmao.

BleedingUranium

Yep, and in a sense it's a very, very twisted call-back to the very first episode, when the Rulid trio went into the cave to get ice to keep their lunch from losing its Life.

ChocoSUPREMEGG

Did anybody hear the Japanese voice actor for Ryuji (persona 5) in the ep. 4? One of the guild leaders. (Pig)

alice_is_garbage

I usually dont care about random side characters who only appear for 1 ep but lipias and her commanders death really fucked me up.

I really liked both of them, and expected sth of them fighting against the empire from the inside and trying to make peace that way...

Cave-Atlas

For some reason this episode didn't release on Hulu. Does anybody have any idea as to why?

Xunaga

Lipia...:( I wanted to see more of her character develop with her commander.

CrimsonKingXIII

That was a very intense episode. I did not expect Lipia and Shasta to meet their end so quickly, I mean I expected something bad was going to happen to them eventually but not so soon. So Miller likes to kill people and eat their souls; that's Raziel's job! Looking forward to the big battle coming up soon.

TML_PigMac

I couldn't tell the difference between Gabriel and Kirito's actual mental health...

VitL_Assassin

Shasta pulled out the Avatar mode

idreesawais1

That couple already raised a Death Flag in the previous episode so it was expected. But still.... 😥

Good lord that was....dark.
